This was a wind nonet recital held in Christ Church, St Leonards-onSea. The aim of this concert was to provide a ‘warm-up’ event to start the season and re-engage our audience after the summer break. It then enables a publicity ‘push’ for the White Rock concert that follows. Repertoire for this included the Martinu Nonet, Villa-Lobos Chôros No. 7 and the Rheinberger Nonet. This concert marked the launch of a new HPO initiative in relation to ticket prices, aimed at increasing accessibility and diversity and designed to help mitigate the current financial challenges being experience by our local audience. HPC members receive £5 tickets; to broaden access the lowest price ticket is now £7.50; free tickets are now available for those on Universal Credit and Job Seekers Allowance as well as students and under 18s. The concert went extremely well. The repertoire was interesting and challenging which was appreciated by both players and audience. 16/10/22 ♪ On Sunday 16th October 2022, we held the first main orchestra concert of the season at the White Rock Theatre. This was part of an international collaboration and involved a guest conductor, Linus Lerner, from Brazil, and two Bulgarian soloists, Ivo Stankov Violin and Lachezar Stankov Piano. Repertoire for this concert included Mendelssohn’s Double Concerto, Guerra-Peixe’s Mourão and Villa-Lobos Bachianas No.2 Our team were disappointed that they could not persuade the White Rock to agree to our new pricing policy for tickets. The cheapest ticket had been £12.50 and free tickets were only available for students and under 18s. Our Artistic Director persevered with his negotiations on this matter during subsequent weeks and we were delighted that they finally agreed to drop the prices to allow £10.50 tickets and to offer free tickets for those on Job Seekers Allowance and Universal Credit for our subsequent concerts. This does make a difference to audience numbers. We offered free tickets to schools and were delighted that local schools have started to make block bookings for their GCSE students – this shows that our team is making real progress in building relationships in the local area. 12/11/22 ♪ On Sunday 12th November 2022, we held our second HPO recital. This was concert of classical guitar solos and duos held at Christ Church, St Leonards-on-Sea. This was a hugely successful concert with an excellent atmosphere (including** **atmospheric lighting) and strong audience numbers. Public space concerts / pop-ups: HPO organised the following one-hour events which were hugely appreciated by passing shoppers. o HPO Brass Quartet, Carols – Sunday 27th November, 3:00pm (Priory Meadow Square)) o HPO Brass Quartet, Carols – Friday 2nd December, 5:30pm (Lamb House)) 01/12/22 On Thursday 1st December 2022 we held another informal showcase performance for HPO Songbirds – our children’s choir founded in 2021 with support from the Lottery Community Fund for children aged 7-13. This had been preceded by 10 children’s workshop sessions. This showcase performance is an opportunity for the children to sing (both ensemble and solo items) and play their instruments (with piano accompaniment) in an informal setting, allowing them to get used to performing to family and friends. This enables them to build their confidence and skills in a supportive environment. Entrance to this concert was free of charge. 03/12/22 ♪ On Saturday 3rd December 2022 we held our first HPO Singers concert of the season. This had been preceded by 10 workshop sessions with the amateur singers of the choir. They performed a varied programme of music written by composers from the 16th to the 21st century, including wellknown and less well-known composers such as Poulenc, Dering, Handl, Lassus, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Mouton, Sweelinck, Lauridsen, Victoria, and Scheidt. HPO maintained its commitment to offering free tickets for under 18s and students and was delighted to add its new initiative of free tickets for those on Job Seekers Allowance and Universal Credit. To reflect current financial circumstances there were also low-price ticket options extending down to £7.50. 21/12/22 ♪ On Wednesday 21st December 2022 we held our Christmas Gala Concert, which has become a highpoint of the year. This concert** **which includes orchestra, amateur adult choir, children’s choir, and audience participation is hugely popular. Tickets were sold out well in advance and extra chairs were sought to increase the number of tickets that could be made available. Audience numbers rose over 500 this year and numbers participating rose over 150. HPO maintained its commitment to offering free tickets for under 18s and students and was delighted to add its new initiative of free tickets for those on Job Seekers Allowance and Universal Credit. To reflect current financial circumstances there were also low-price ticket options extending down to £7.50. There is clearly a tremendous local interest in concerts like this and HPO have been inspired to consider ways to expand its schedule to include further opportunities for such popular community events. The team put a lot of thought into the preparations for the concert since this was the largest number ever to attend a HPO concert in Christ Church. There were separate entrance doors, and a system is in place to check people’s tickets once they are seated to avoid a crush on the door 14/01/23 ♪ On Saturday 14th January 2023, we held our first HPO recital of the New Year at Christ Church, St Leonardson-Sea. This was a recital for soprano, baritone, and piano. Repertoire for this include Villa-Lobos Bachianas No.5, Schubert Six Moments Musicaux, and Schubert Die Wintereisse. This was designed to be a more intimate concert but was very much enjoyed by a larger audience than anticipated. 25/02/22 ♪ On Saturday 25th February 2023 we were proud to present a concert that marked the culmination of a project that HPO Singers and HPO Songbirds had been working on alongside Ensemble OrQuesta Baroque. Alongside his orchestral experience, our Artistic Director is a baroque expert. One of his aims is to share his love of baroque music in the community. Marcio’s aim was to offer an inclusive all-age project (January - February 2023), centred on Cavalli’s ‘Musiche Sacre’. The project included interactive** **singing workshops and performance opportunities for both children and adult participants, alongside 5 young professional singers and an ensemble of specialist early musicians. Marcio prepared a new multi-purpose and functional edition with a sample realisation of the continuo to be made freely available online – nothing like this is currently available. Writing about this project, Marcio said: ‘I want to champion early music and make it accessible. I want to work within my local community in the south-east and give exciting, challenging, and highquality musical opportunities to both early career professionals and enthusiastic amateurs. I have chosen the ‘Musiche Sacre’ because I believe it is an excellent introduction to baroque music for children and for adult amateurs, and a wonderful experience for young professional singers and early career specialist musicians to share. Cavalli's 'Musiche Sacre' is full of variety, imagination, and experimentation. His writing is expressive, engaging, and full of contrasts, with simple hymn-like sections, expressive solo items, and intimate moments, contrasted with spectacular motets displaying the influence of opera on his writing, exciting instrumental interludes, dancelike melodies, rhythmic vitality, and frequent metric changes. Cavalli is the master of weaving a web of musicodramatic characterisations. The variety within this collection makes it ideal to explore with the combination of groups that I want to work with – young early career professional singers, specialist early music instrumentalists, talented amateur adult singers and enthusiastic children. I want to champion this music since it is so rarely performed.’** **Marcio noted that the fact that Cavalli’s Musiche Sacre is sometimes named ‘Music in the time of plague’ gives it a certain poignancy. ‘Cavalli’s music aptly represents the many dimensions of a community experiencing trauma - something that perhaps still resonates strongly with us today. In preparing the project Marcio noted that singing workshops and performance opportunities help both child and adult participants who are struggling with:** **----- Start of picture text -----**

These| |academies have given many talented| |young singers from all over the world| |the opportunity to perform complete| |roles in fully staged productions, in the| |original language, with professional| |ensemble accompaniment. Participants| |benefit from ten days of rigorous tuition| |and training from the Ensemble| |OrQuesta team of multi-skilled| |professionals, receiving coaching on| |technique, language, style, stagecraft,| |and movement. To reflect current financial circumstances there were also low-price ticket options extending down to £7.50. 29/03/23 ♪ On Wednesday 29th March 2023 we were proud to return to The White Rock Theatre in Hastings for the second main orchestral concert of our season. Repertoire included Reinecke’s Flute Concerto, Britten’s Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6. Continuing our season theme of building international connections, we are pleased to welcome the supremely talented Brazilian flautist Geisa Felipe as the soloist for Reinecke's Flute Concerto. Geisa Felipe is Flute Professor at the Federal University of Uberlândia in Brazil. HPO is working hard on building connections with schools - establishing contacts to emphasise the availability of free tickets for under 18s, offering open orchestral rehearsals, and building relaxed performances into our season schedules are all high on our list of priorities. Create Music, five local secondary schools and Awards for Young Musicians were particularly targeted prior to this concert. To foster these connections, the idea of an open afternoon rehearsal was supplemented by a Learning page on our website with ideas about Britten’s Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra for schoolchildren to explore. Audience numbers improved greatly for this concert, rising to 250 tickets sold. Take up of free tickets by charities and schools was strong and response to this initiative is increasingly positive. HPO maintained its commitment to offering free tickets for under 18s and students and was delighted that, after careful negotiation by its Artistic Director, the White Rock allowed us to include our new initiative of free tickets for those on Job Seekers Allowance and Universal Credit. To reflect current financial circumstances there were also low-price ticket options, although the theatre only allowed this to extend down to £10.50 rather than the £7.50 option** **that we prefer to aim for. Professional photos of the final rehearsal and the performance can be seen here. 15/04/23 ♪ On Saturday 15th April 2023 HPO held a concert in partnership with Hastings Philharmonic Choir at Christ Church, St Leonards-on-Sea. Repertoire included Mozart Bassoon Concerto, Haydn Te Deum, and Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor. We welcomed the outstanding young English bassoonist Ben Exell to take centre stage as soloist for Mozart's bassoon concerto. Ben has been HPO's principal bassoonist since the orchestra was first founded. Professional photos of the final rehearsal and the performance can be seen here. Summary feedback – this concert was hugely enjoyed and was sold out. Orchestra and choir were much appreciated, the vocal soloists were declared to be ‘outstanding’ and the bassoonist received a standing ovation from many audience members. ♪ 21/04/23 and ♪ 22/04/23 On Friday April 21st 2023, and Saturday April 22nd 2023, HPO Songbirds acted as the children’s chorus for Opera South East’s performance of Bizet’s Carmen at The White Rock Theatre. This was a tremendous opportunity for our songsters. It had grown out of their role in HPO’s own opera project – La bohème – which took place in February last year. Having heard and seen the children participating in this, the music director of Opera South East got in touch to ask if our children would be interested in joining OSE for their Carmen project. Our children had been so enthusiastic about their first experience of opera, that everyone was keen to take part, even though it would involve the children in additional rehearsal time. Professional photos of the children’s part in this production can be seen here. 20/05/23 ♪ On Saturday 20th May 2023 HPO was invited by Winchelsea Arts Festival to perform at the church of St Thomas the Martyr, Winchelsea. These connections made with local festivals and small towns are very important to HPO. We recognise that many individuals in local communities are not** **able to travel great distances, and we know how much they appreciate hearing high-quality classical music on their doorstep. The opportunity to gather for a sociable evening and to share the joy of hearing exciting repertoire ‘up close’ means a great deal to them, and we always find that we receive an invitation ‘to return’ as soon as the concert is completed. It gives us great pleasure to share our love of music with these audiences. We are always received with great warmth. At a time when concern for the environment dominates global thinking, we offered a reflective programme of music designed to celebrate nature - marking the annual visit of the swifts to Winchelsea. Repertoire included Beethoven’s Symphony No.6, Fauré’s Suite Pelléas et Mélisande and Vaughan Williams’ Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus. This concert was sold out. 02/06/23-03/06/23 ♪ On Friday 2nd June 2023 and Saturday 3rd June 2023 HPO hosted the second Ensemble OrQuesta Opera Academy of the year. This centred on Handel’s Alcina. This took place at St John’s Church in St Leonards-on-Sea. Professional photos from the final performances can be seen here. Audience feedback: our audiences have become increasingly interested in hearing baroque repertoire and really enjoy the opportunity to see young opera students take to the stage. Many of the students have little experience on stage before, but all making amazing progress under the guidance of Marcio da Silva who is renowned for his expertise as a coach in languages, vocal technique, drama, and movement. This academy was particularly interesting to audiences. Marcio had previously staged it in London, where it received considerable critical acclaim (being name No 4 in The Observer’s Top ten classical music performances of 2021). Marcio takes the thoughtprovoking themes in the opera and presents a modern interpretation whilst remaining true to the musical authenticity of Handel’s score. Our audience enjoyed the ‘vibrant and** |||**dynamic interactions between the**
**characters’, and they were impressed by**
**the ‘quality of the singing’ and the**
**‘polish of the performance’ enhanced by**
**the ‘outstanding’ specialist musicians.**
**June and July 2023 saw the launch of**
**our HPO Open Doors 2023 project. We**
**were delighted to receive funding from**
**Arts Council England for this project.**

The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for the year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is required. It is my responsibility to: - examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act; - follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and - state whether particular matters have come to my attention. ## **Basis of examiner's report** My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters.
