## Chief Executive 

## Khristina McCormack 

Worthing Soup Kitchen (WSK), founded by Khristina McCormack of SHOUT WSK in 2012, started by providing meals from a car boot due to a recognized need for more food services for the homeless. 

Initially serving on Thursdays, it expanded to include a sit-down meal at St Matthew’s church and a Sunday breakfast at St Clare’s Day Centre, the latter addressing the high suicide rate on Sundays within the street community. 

During Covid, WSK significantly increased its support, delivering food and essential items to up to 90 clients daily, eventually leading to the establishment of the WSK Hub/Cafe for ongoing evening meals. 

Client requests also spurred the creation of WSK Food Parcels in 2019, which evolved into a food bank and later a food pantry in 2024. 

SHOUT WSK became a registered charity in September 2020 after eight years of self-funding, largely thanks to a fundraiser. 

The WSK Hub/Cafe has enabled training and employment opportunities for clients and volunteers. 

WSK continues to develop with a food pantry and charity shop, the latter ensuring the pantry's sustainability. 

Khristina remains dedicated to supporting the homeless and those facing food poverty in the local community, driving the charity's growth.

## Trustees 

## Keith Sunderland 

Keith worked as a sales rep for GlaxosmithKline for 33 years and on retiring he served as a local councillor for 8 years becoming leader of the opposition for the last two years. 

He is a member of the Lib Dems. 

He was a Street Pastor and ended up as coordinator. He is on the leadership of the church he attends, and a governor of Bohunt Academy. 

He is currently Chairperson for Worthing Soup Kitchen. 

## Arron Burns 

Aaron Burns has worked in Housing and Social Care for the last 28 years. 

Aaron began his professional care with the Royal National Institute for Deaf People as a residential social worker and interpreter for deaf/blind people. Aaron then spent a number of years managing supported accommodation for young homeless people in the West Country. 

For the last 20 years Aaron had worked for Brighton & Hove City Council in various capacities. He is currently the Interim Director of Housing People Services - Temporary & Supported Accommodation. 

Aaron's interests include theatre, the arts, reading and his dogs.

## Trustees 

## John Bishop 

Aaron Burns has worked in Housing and Social Care for the last 28 years. 

John is a local and was a sales rep in the Food Industry ending up as a sales manager. 

He served 7 years as a Circuit Steward in the Methodist Church, and it was through the church that involved with helping the homeless and needy. 

He is now an advocate for the work, and has been a conduit for donations to the Worthing Soup Kitchen's Food Hub and Charity Shop. 

## Allan Hedley 

Allan’s career was in the pharmaceutical industry, beginning in a research laboratory before moving to international sales where he lived in Zambia, Lebanon and Dubai before moving to Germany, and later to the UK market. 

After retiring, Allan worked with Samaritans before becoming an Advisor at Citizens Advice. After a brief period of relaxation, he accepted an invitation to become a trustee of Worthing Soup Kitchen.

## Trustees Report 

The Trustees have the pleasure in presenting their annual report and accounts for the year ending 31st December 2024. 

## **1. Objectives and activities -** 

The primary objectives of the CIO are: 

a) To aid in the prevention or relief of peoples who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or recovering from homelessness in Sussex. This is done by liaising closely with other homelessness agency to help provide long term housing solutions to those affected, 

b) To relieve the charitable needs of people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or recovering from homelessness in Sussex by working with such peoples and others to provide or assist in the provision of food items, support, advice and signposting services. 

c) To work with those who are in food poverty and poverty to alleviate hunger and poverty. We do this by running our Food pantry for all in need to access. 

## **2. Structure, governance and management**

## **3. Financial Review** 

Total receipts for the year were £173,652 (2023: £113,328) and total payments amounted to £172,857 (2023: £112,619), giving a net surplus of £795 (2023: £619). Unrestricted reserves at the year end were £15,443 (2023: £18,918), with restricted reserves of £37,214 (2023: £32,945). 

## **4. Risk Management** 

The trustees continually consider the major risks to which the charity is exposed, and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to these risks.

## **—— January —** 

Our little team has grown - our cafe now has Rowena as Hub Manager and Elliot and Ben as the chefs. All contributing to our charity's growth. Let us see where 2024 takes us! 

In January we had the pleasure of hosting Andy's Angels volunteer evening - an amazing local charity who do lots of specialised work with many families in our area who are experiencing grief due to the death of a loved one. It was literally a full house - for their volunteer bingo night. 

We also signed a Service Level Agreement with Southern Housing who have been so supportive of our work over the past few years.This will enable us to grow and develop future plans to support more families in need in our community later in 2024. 

We hosted a Council meeting to discuss the future of Tarring Road for local residents and businesses - which was well attended - giving our community a voice.

## **—— February ——** 

February introduced us to a new partner - Clarion and United Living. This enabled us to grow our IT support in order for clients to access a further range of free courses through SHOUT WSK. 

To date 92 clients and volunteers have accessed training this way. All have completed their Food Hygiene Level 2 courses and many more have completed other courses. Our on site IT instructor is the ever so patient John Ellis while others have been able to complete their chosen courses either in our IT room or on their own - with the knowledge that we are there to assist when needed. 

We also received a £250 donation from the Sompting Lodge - Thank you! 

February also saw us offer our space to Lamona and Sean from Worthing Help Group for their first coffee and chat session. How this group has grown in the past year and how many people have benefitted. 

A visit to The Body Shop in Littlehampton - where we were one of their chosen charities for 2023-2024 resulted in a £500 cheque being paid to SHOUT WSK! Thank you Alex for the nomination! 

Southern Rail visit - offering to support us with donations! All thanks to our lovely Rebecca - who is now a fully qualified train driver! Well done Rebecca! We will miss you and Mum at Sunday morning breakfast shifts. 

Shout WSK also became a member of the Rough Sleeping Meetings at Worthing Borough Council! We now liaise with the Outreach Team, Turning Tides, Mental Health Teams, The Police,Probation, Base One and Housing - this means weekly meetups on Monday afternoons to raise concerns and implement change/support for clients across our networks.

## **—— March ——** 

We took our next steps to grow our charity. We secured a lease for 219 Tarring Road. It will become our Food pantry, Community Fridge and will incorporate a micro charity shop to help us on our journey to become self-sustaining. 

Age Uk - we developed ties with Age Uk by providing support to cook a weekly meal for their clients at Milward Court. This allowed a further thirty residents/pensioners a week to access a freshly cooked meal, have engagement and fun in a social environment - who would otherwise have been on their own. Thank you Karen for considering SHOUT WSK to be part of this wonderful project - we have enjoyed our time with you all! 

Our CEO was invited to The Brewhouse for International Women's Day - she even had a go at making the beer! 

The brilliant Dawn O Donnell joined us as a volunteer! 

Dawn has just arrived at a crucial time for our charity - with the lease secured for 219, Dawn will be able to grow our charity - and ensure the charity shop side is turned into a self-sustaining venture. It is definitely in the right hands. 

Bird and Blend (the Goring Branch) have decided to raise donations for us. Not just their wonderful tea but also act as a donation point for staff. Thank you Jed! 

Jackie and her family are still hard at work on the allotment. Planting and growing all things needed for the food pantry and cafe! We will reap the rewards later in 2024 - once the growing season has come to an end.

Our WSK Hub\Cafe was recommended on Restaurant Guru due to the number of positive reviews given on Tripadvisor and google. I believe this is all down to the good work of both our chefs and volunteers - Well done Ben and Elliot!!

A lovely donation from Pizza Post made its way through our doors. We had lots of very happy clients!Thank you Charlie and Harry! 

We started to purchase shop fittings for 219! One of my most memorable moments was a drive from Horsham with two mannequins sitting in the van seatbelted in ofcourse - all of the way to Worthing! 

Our new Epos Till arrived for 219 - We are almost there now!

Our turn to host for the Food Poverty Network and Community Works! A lovely meet up and our food went down a treat! 

Our beautiful Lisa won the volunteer of the year award for all of her dedication and years spent running our Food bank from the Lovett Hub. Congratulations and well deserved! 

Opening Day!! Balloons collected and our doors at 219 officially opened on the 22nd of June - with our town crier Bob Smytherman announcing the opening to one and all! 

Elaine Hammond also did a lovely write up in the local paper!

**—— July ——** 

We officially teamed up with Sally and Cathy from Crew to offer their “Stitch it don't ditch it” sessions at home. The repair cafe now runs from our WSK\HUB Cafe on the 1st and third Saturdays in the month. This will enable us to revamp damaged good quality items to sell in our charity shop. Saving clothes from landfill!

Paul Kemp, a well known local photographer highlighted some of our lovely volunteers and staff in his exhibition at Colonnade House in Worthing in an effort to raise the profile of the work which we do. Thank you Paul! https://www.instagram.com/pauldavidkemp/ 

Another wonderful donation from Event Cycle which we will use in our cafe and 219 to display items on sale - in our charity shop! Thank you to Linda and David for collecting.

## **—— September ——** 

We let our hub out for a Jamaican food night on Friday the 13th of September hosted by the wonderful Keith from Nyam Jam. It was a sell out - and gave Keith the confidence to branch out and do pop outs in his home town Brighton.

We sadly had our farewell meal with staff members - two who have gone on to full time employment. It is always sad to say goodbye - but we need to develop our module to be run by both clients and volunteers.Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to grow our cafe and hub this past year - we would not have been able to do it without you all.Wishing you all the best with your future ventures. 

October also saw us take part in the Guildbourne Thrive fare managed by Debbie from Crew. This allowed us to promote our charity once a month until March 25!

## **—— November ——** 

We welcomed in November with Nicky from Stitch it Don't ditch it making us some templates to use for printing our charity logo! Amazing Nicky - Thank you! These are also going to be used on our one off tote bags! 

Wrap up Worthing - This was our second year to take part in this very special event. Our Rotary hero Lofty collected hundreds of coats this year for those in need at Worthing Train Station and at lots of various collection points around town - including ours! 

Our Charity Shop and Cafe hosted Sam from Nkuastar children's clothing range. Sam who makes all of the items had been homeless and thanks to the job centre and a small business grant - Sam created her own brand of clothing. They definitely brought a splash of colour to our walls! 

Our first student from Northbrook college joined us as a volunteer and to learn skills. Welcome Samuel. 

We welcomed the Gamers to our Hub - they now run a regular Friday evening session at WSK!

Khristina, our CEO, had a lovely visit to the Squirrels and Sharon Field - the Squirrel and Beaver Leader at Durrington Scout Group for their Super Hero Day. The squirrels donated lots of much needed items for both our homeless clients and families who are experiencing food poverty.

The last day in November saw our WSK Hub\Cafe transformed into Santa's grotto - all thanks to Dawn, our magical Christmas Angel.

**—— December ——** 

December started with a Bang!We hosted our first afternoon tea with Santa - which sold out! Santa was very busy and returned again for a second visit on the 15th of December. We hope to see you and Mrs Claus again next year! 

Worthing Lions visited and donated lots of much needed food for our food pantry and families this Christmas! Thank you Hazel and team! 

Quercus Nurseries - donated two Christmas trees to our charity after we were nominated in a draw! Thank you! 

We did a food drive at Tescos in December - with our beautiful volunteer Tina holding the fort! This was to increase donations to enable us to make up food hampers for each family we support. They contained all of the items needed to make a Christmas Day dinner for their family - and included fresh turkey,ham, veg and all of the goodies needed to do this.

We also had a toy donation from More Radio - no child from our food pantry went without this Christmas!So many companies contributed such as Morrisons and Tescos as well as The Rowans day Centre and GSK to mention a few. 

The wonderful Bowers and Wilkins hosted a very special event for our children in need - with a private cinema viewing, party food and a gift from Father Christmas. Those who were lucky enough to attend thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you so much Jo and team! 

The 25th of December saw us host our annual Christmas Day meal at the Atrium on Worthing seafront - A special heartfelt thanks goes out to Matthew Pike from Worthing Theatres for giving up his Christmas Day to open and close the Atrium. The Cricketers Broadwater, Little Tums in Shoreham and our many volunteers who peeled,chopped, diced and cooked and an amazing Christmas Day Meal was served. Noone was on their own or hungry! Thank you to all who contributed and volunteered on the day. We needed each of you to make this happen.

## A Message From The CEO 

A Big Thank you to all who believed in us in 2024. 

Funders who supported our journey and the volunteers and clients who made it happen. 

Together we have supported more people this year than ever! 

Our Sunday morning homeless breakfast service continues from Saint Clare's thanks to a dedicated volunteer team. This can see up to thirty people access on a busy day. Last year we had 928 clients access and we made 1179 breakfasts during a two hour window over the course of a year! 

Our biggest expense to keep this much needed service running is sadly the cost of food packaging - such as takeaway cups, lids and food boxes. 

This continues to be a vital lifeline for our clients with many other requests and support needs being met. 

We also continue to run our Wednesday evening Outreach Service for both our homeless clients and those in temporary accommodation without access to cooking facilities - up to twenty five people access per evening - often taking food away to last them for a few days. Here clients fill their flasks, can access dry sleeping bags, food and clothing when needed as well as support to other services. 

What has been amazing is the addition of our WSK Food Pantry and micro charity shop. The public have fully backed this venture - supporting us with all sorts of donations which in turn allows us to cover our rent,utility bills and one of our clients a small wage. It has also created a small surplus which enables us to purchase food to stock up our pantry weekly! It is now self-sustaining! 

This venture has also meant our clients have choice. Food is no longer put in a box or delivered to the door- it means people have to engage.They have to move out of the social isolation bubble and interact - which we all know is good for Mental Health and physical wellbeing. Many have become volunteers or help out when they arrive - giving the pantry a real community buzz. 

They are given dignity - they shop and they choose what items they need. It also means our homeless clients can select items of clothing when needed - enjoying the freedom that being able to shop brings. 

Our Community Fridge is always the busiest day. A few weeks ago on a Friday over 74 families accessed within a three hour window. Needless to say the food is gone as soon as we put it on the shelves. It has become a constant battle to keep the shelves stocked as more and more people need support. The cost of living crisis,electricity costs, the lack of social housing, extortionate rents,sometimes not having the right benefit entitlement or the length of time it takes to have a claim processed are all reasons why clients access.

This has become a reality for many and with no light at the end of the tunnel we only expect to see numbers continue to rise. 

Through our food pantry and community fridge in 2024 we supported over 5542 people -(including children) - with Worthings population being estimated at 100k this figure equates to 5.5% of our town. That in itself is no mean feat and has only been achievable thanks to all of the hard work of volunteers involved - from those who collect the food, to doing a shift at SHOUT WSK. Know what a difference you have made - working to alleviate hunger in our town. Thank you all! 

We also have our beloved trustees working behind the scenes making sure that everything is ship shape and up to date - a special Thank you goes to Keith Sunderland our chair who has been on call to advise as well as attending many meetings on behalf of SHOUT WSK. Thank you for your guidance,patience and time. 

On a sad note - we said goodbye to 12 clients and two of our lead volunteers - reminding us that there is still so much more work to do - and that no one should be calling the streets their home in 2024. We hosted four funerals and hired a minibus so our clients could grieve and be part of the services to say farewell. 

This meant a lot to both the families involved and the clients.It gave everyone a chance to meet each other and the realisation that their loved one was also part of another community and were very much supported and loved there also. 

We have had the pleasure of connecting with many more funders and supporters who have helped us on our journey throughout 2024. A heartfelt Thank you to each of you for keeping our doors open to help others in need.. 

Finally to all those who have volunteered,both clients and members of our community - know we cannot do this without you. We have relied on your time, skills and effort to keep things running. You are the reason we are here, still working to support those most vulnerable in our community. 

From February 2024 we had 82 people access training many more people have accessed since. This was thanks to an introduction to Molly from United Living via Sophie Lowe from Southern Housing. 

Our lovely John Ellis has supported many individuals via our Thursday IT junction service to gain their Food Hygiene Certificates to enable them to volunteer at our Hub gaining many more skills such as how to be a barista and how to work an epos till. Clients also have the opportunity to work in the kitchen should they choose and learn how to use our thermomix. All skills are worth gaining as they could become a career choice. 

Our future plans are many - we have made it this far and hope to continue to grow. A new shop is planned for 2025 to process donations which we are unable to take in 219 due to the lack of space - amongst others - all as an effort to keep food on the shelves for those struggling with food poverty.

We will continue to strive to become self-sufficient and develop projects which will benefit our clients, volunteers and community. They have been our lifeforce, our strength and our WSK family - supporting each other to become the best they can be and knowing “Every Action and every deed is to help someone who is in need.”

## 2024 Data Breakdown 

- 1 **.Outreach Saint Clares** - during 2024 we had 928 Homeless presentations and made 

- 1179 homeless breakfasts on Sunday mornings. 

2. **Outreach Meal at WSK** - we made 1300 individual meals as we make a minimum of 25 

meals per a week on a Wednesday evening.(25 x 52 weeks = 1300) there are frequently more meals made but this is the minimum, 

3. **Christmas Day Meal** - prepped and cooked for 100 adults and children on Christmas Day. This is the maximum number allowed in The Denton Lounge. 

- 4.For the **Food Pantry** / **Community Fridge** (now combined – due to opening up 219 Tarring Road) Open 5 days a week - 5542 presentations over the year - with 269 children between them in their families. 

## **Volunteer Data 2024 -**

Cafe - a total of 2x 3 hour shifts 7 days a week with a minimum of 2<br>volunteers on each shift = 84 hours a week x 46 weeks = 3864<br>plus a further 3 volunteers working 2 x 3 hour shifts x 5 days a week = 90<br>hours a week by 6 weeks = 540 as the cafe went to 5 days a week in<br>November total =  4404 hours annually  for the WSK Hub\Cafe.<br>2. Outreach service  -  Saint Clare's  = 2 volunteers x 3.5 hours(cooks) = 7<br>hours x 52 weeks =  364  hours per a year and 2 volunteers by 2.5 hours for<br>front of house = 5 hours per a week by 52 weeks in a year =  260  hours for the<br>year. Making it a total of  624 hours annually  for Saint Clare's breakfast<br>service alone. This remains the baseline - sometimes new volunteers would<br>shadow - they have not been included in the volunteer hours.<br>3. Outreach service  -  WSK HUB\Cafe  - on Wednesdays - 2 cooks and prep -<br>from 3pm - 8pm = 5 hours per a week each = 10 hours x 52 =  520 hours<br>annually.  Plus two volunteers to help wash up and engage with clients from<br>6pm - 9pm = 3 hours x 2 = 6 hours x 52 =  312 hours annually.  We also have<br>collections scheduled for Outreach which equates to a minimum of 2 hours on<br>a Wednesday = 2 hours x 52 = 104 hours annually<br>Making our total figure for WSK Outreach on Wednesday evenings - a<br>minimum of  936 hours annually .This figure also remains the same<br>4. Christmas Prep for Christmas Day - 8 ladies from 12 - 6 on Christmas Eve =<br>96 hours. Plus a further estimated minimum 30 hours by various<br>organisations who help us - source food for Christmas Day. Making it a total<br>of  126 hours annually  for prep day.<br>5. Christmas Hampers and gifts for children in the families - 8 people<br>collected, sorted, wrapped and organised this for Christmas 2023 - they<br>worked additional hours throughout December to make sure every family had<br>food and gifts for their children. I am estimating that this took a further 20<br>hours(minimum as it was done over weeks by each volunteer) 20 hours x 8<br>volunteers x 7 days = 1120 hours annually<br>8. Admin/ IT support weekly at our hub for the public - a minimum of 2 hours x<br>52 weeks provided by Keith and John Ellis -  104 hours annually<br>9. Volunteer co-ordinator role - minimum of 6 hours per a week x 52 weeks in<br>the year  = 312 hours annually<br>10. Admin support -  Zero hours - as this now falls under Khristina’s role.Soph<br>left to travel.Currently in Australia.<br>11. PR\Posters/ Events including food drives -  4 hours per a week x 52 a year<br>=  208 annually -  this is a lower end estimate as we often have 8 people over<br>the course of a day when we do food drives.<br>12. Additional collections - we frequently have additional collections at<br>estimated 2 hours per a week for a volunteer driver x 52 =  104 hours<br>annually<br>13. Allotment - 6 hours per a week x 3 people = 12 hours x 48 weeks due to<br>holiday and winter  - 576 hours annually<br>14. Trustees and chair - Trustees 2 x 10 hours annually =  20 hours  -<br>(meetings and reviews.) One trustee on behalf of church 3 hours weekly =<br>156 hours annually  and chairperson - 10 hours per week with meetings, IT<br>and monitoring -  520 hours annually Making it a total of 696 hours<br>annually<br>15. Food Pantry/WSK Charity Shop - This is open 5 days a week. It has a<br>minimum of three volunteers on any day. They volunteer from 9 - 4.30pm two<br>days a week - Monday and Friday = 7.5 hours daily x 3(number of<br>volunteers) = 22.5 hours x 2 days = 45 hours weekly x 52 making annual<br>figure of  2340 h ours annually plus a further three days(Tuesday, Thursday<br>and Saturday)from 11 am - 4.30pm = 5.5 hours x 3 (number of volunteers) =<br>16.5 x 3(number of days) = 49.5 hours x 52(to give annual figure) =  2574<br>The stats for Friday are under the Community Fridge.The total volunteer<br>hours required to operate this venture annually =  4914 volunteer hours<br>annually<br>Most of the hours remain the same - as the core volunteers carry our<br>services through the hours which they give. As always this is the<br>minimum volunteer hours given. I report to the Trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Shout WSK for the period ended 31 December 2024, which are set out on pages 25 to 27. 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the trustees of the Charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). 

I report in respect of my examination of the Charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

## **Independent examiner’s statement** 

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 

- (1) accounting records were not kept in respect of the Charity as required by section 130 of the Act; 

- (2) or the accounts do not accord with those records. 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
