Advancing education for the public benefit by the provision of a school for children aged 5 to 18 in the district of Siwan, Bihar, India.

Provision of a school building, furnishings, teaching staff, teaching resources and school bus. 

The school provides employment for 5 teachers (including the principal) from the local area and a part-time graduate adviser, as well as a driver for the school bus and a school cleaner. 

The school serves a mixed community of Muslims and Hindus and provides a fully inclusive education to children in the locality, regardless of their gender, class, caste or religion.

The Trustees have had regard to the guidance on public benefit issued by the Charity Commission and are all fully committed to ensuring that this is upheld.

There are two young graduates who live locally and who volunteer for around four hours a week each on average. They support the work of the teachers and in particular are able to help children in developing basic IT skills. The school now has 5 laptops donated from the UK and taken to the school by Trustees on visits to the school.

Section D                      Achievements and performance 

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** 

The Charity improvements made in the school building by the addition of a reception area and school office, have continued to enhance the experience of parents and visitors and support the administrative functions of the staff and principal. The number of pupils in attendance remains above 80, and the school continues to have a very positive reputation in the locality. It is seen as innovative and a place where pupils thrive. The curriculum now includes science, maths, reading and writing in Hindi and local languages, and English, mainly spoken with a little reading and writing The science includes learning about the solar system and plant growth and we are introducing some study of local plants and plant life-cycles. We have been fortunate to receive support from The Commonwealth Association of Science, Technology & Mathematics Educators (CASTME), which links science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educators across the Commonwealth.  CASTME partners with Findel International Education Resources to sponsor annual awards, and in both 2022 and 2023 the TDEC was awarded prizes in the Community (2022) and Education (2023) categories. The prizes have provided £200 worth of science equipment, including hand held magnifiers and magnets, and measuring equipment -  jugs, weighing scales, a trundle wheel and a window thermometer – plus some lovely posters showing the life cycle of a plant, and an ‘Intro to Structures Bridges Set’.  All of this has all been taken to the school (March 2024) to develop and support the emphasis on practical work – using the equipment, growing seeds, and looking at gravity, magnetism etc. in the context of play. This kind of approach to teaching science is new in terms of education in this part of India, where rote learning is the default in both private and state schools. In addition, the Trustees have taken donated and refurbished laptops to the school and the children are beginning to have some experience of using these to learn keyboard skills. All of this equipment is really supporting our approach and helping the teachers to develop their own understanding too, as they work with the children Maths is based on the English National Curriculum with a focus on counting, place value, number bonds and relationships, and e.g. understanding commutativity and associativity for addition and multiplication. In March 2024 the Chairperson of the Trustees visited India and spent several weeks at the school. On this extended visit he worked with and supported the teachers on all of these things, running after-school training sessions which the teachers welcomed and enjoyed! As a retired Ofsted Inspector and Head of the Science Education Department at a University Teacher Training institution, his expertise was invaluable. The Tetara Debi Academy continues to support poorer families in the community by keeping fees to a minimum, and in cases of hardship fees for children are waived. A school bus, funded by the Charity, is used to ensure that, where appropriate/necessary, pupils are safely transported from home to school and back again. The bus is fully paid for and the Charity provides the funds to maintain the vehicle and employ the driver.

The Charity is funded entirely from donations and occasional fund-raising activities. Regular monthly donations have increased again in the last twelve months with contributions from friends and family of the Trustees, and the Trustees themselves.

The Charity continues to be funded entirely from regular small donations and occasional larger donated sums, from around 30+ friends of the Charity. These donations are sufficient to cover the day-to-day running costs of the school, including salaries, classroom resources and general maintenance. However, at the present time the school is at capacity in terms of the space available for pupils and there is an urgent need to raise some capital funds to support the next phase of the building programme. This will be the focus of the next twelve months.
