need for addiiional support and assistance, which is not funded i'la statutory ageiicies
nd cannot be easily met by the parents or guardians.
We consider grants to help in cases where a meml)er or a family member has phyEical
or menial healih challenges, in end-of-life care, bereai'emenl, family breakdowns,
regular hospital visiting costs and specialist equipmeni and modifications which are
not funded via a giatulnry agency.

guidance published by the Charity Commission.

Z023 £ 202,021. tl)erefore a decrease in grant funding of-£59,118 during 2024. The worrying
increase in demand for assistance we saw in 2023 seems to haiie plaieaued.
However, the economic cl)allenges facing the UK tontinue to adversely affect our memberg on
lower incoines aiid those dealing M'ith complex health needs. We have seen an increase in the
iieed iu i55uL. fo(Trd vnuchers, and assistance ivith basic lii'ing requireinents such as lieating.
I'his is the col'e biisines5 of ilie cliarily, and Ihe Tnlsiees and Administration si3fl havL' Miorked
hard to identify potential members iyho need assistance but have not approaclied tlie Fund for
help.
By providing p051tive support and encouragement. mernbers and their families have felt
eiiahled in seek support, instead of struggling to cope in challenging circumstanceg. This is
reflected in the upturn in ihe numl)er aiid type of api)licarions we now receive. We will
coi)iinue io work in partnership to ideiitify tho*e Officer4 and families in need of supi)ort.

During 2023 we awarded a iotal ol"£721500 in this Lategory. to bereaved partners. During 2024
the charity aw'arded a lotal of £51,605. a decrease of-£20,895. Several people declined io apply

The slight decline in awards 111 this calegory may be partly due to i)osl covid recoi'ery wiihiii
tlie general populus of our members after a significant spike in the number of members M,Iio
P4issed away iii 20Z3. Tl)ere is iio direct ci'idence tliat the rise in deaths was direcily related to
Ci)vicl-iy, hom'ei'er l()ng c(Ivid ra5es, limitations in accessing NH5 treatment5, may have liad an
indirect iinpact on reporied dL)atlis.

DEPENDENT CHILD GRANTS
This is a grant awarded on an annual basis tn a child lor young personl who is under 21 years
of age, and still in full time Edutation. lkne child will have lost one or hnih parents, 01. legal
guardian. Only Children where one or both parents or legal 8uhrdians M?ere or are members of
the fund may apply.
In 2024 the charity awarded 'dependeiii child 8rants 01 £2>W to each eligible child or young
person.
The award of the Dependent child grant would not preclude further grant assistance from the
Fund, where it is demonstrated that additional support is required. This M'ould be achieved
via the special grant and emergency Special grani i?rocedure%.
Whc>n the Fund receive information that a member or their partner has died, we make
enquiries to establish if tl)ere are any dependent children. In ihlsse siiuatiuns. Ihe CEO will
suppi)rt ihe bi'rcavc.d parlni'r iii making an applic'atii)i) to tIiL. Fund f()r assislai)ce. Witli
permission, thL' CEO will obiain the necL'ssary informaiion and reflr the family tu ihL' Narional
Cluriiey Fund.

Three of our dcpcndcnt children have now complctcd iheir education, and we wish them

INDEPENDENT DEBT ADVISORY SERVICE- SCHEME
The fund cannot assist with grants to clear indebtedness, but where possible M'e try to support
families with immediate welfare needs such as food vouchers. until they are able to deal with
financial issues.
As part ()f' the M'ider package of services, Ihe Fuiid can assisl with referrals to an ii)depeiident
dcbt advisor for our member5, should they not be able to secure free independent Jdi'ice from
the i'ai'ious governnient approved independent chariEies. such as'Naiional Debt HelplinL'.
This setvice is free to those members idcntified as hal'ing significant and complex financial
challenges, which cannoi be resoli'ed throu8h our grant making process.

THE POLICE CHILDRENS, FUND & THE COMPASSIONATE FUND. WORKING
TOGETHER TO HELP CHILDREN IN DEVON & CORNWALL
We are commiited to building positii'e working relationships with like-minded charities and
organisatiuns to help ei'ery'one in the Policing family in limes of need.
The SWPLF is pleased to work iii collaboration with tl)e Police Cljildren's Fund, whn aid
police officers children M,ho are bereaved. or where an Officer has been medically retired. The
charity provides regular financial grants for children where tl)ere is a proven financial need.
The Compassionate fund CEO acts as the point of contaci for the Chief Consrable. so ihat
families in the Devon and Cornwall region, who may be eligible for assistance from the
National Cjurney Fund, are supporied in applying lor regular finai)cial assistAnc¢.. This
assistance will be in addition to ihe Compassionate Fund annual 'dependent cliild, grants.
No c()sts are charged to the Police Children s Fund or the Cl)ief s Office for ihis support, and
we are pleased to continue this important work for children in our regioii.
The Police Children s Fund provides regular financial assistanc'e for children ivlio liav¢ losi unc.
