Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The Gwent Baptist Association was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation on the 9[th] September 2020.

The year 2020-21 will remain long in our memories because of the Covid-19 pandemic that had a severe impact upon almost every aspect of our lives and the wholesale closure of our church and chapel buildings for public worship.

Unfortunately, a number of the Association’s planned activities had to be postponed or cancelled because of the Covid-19 lockdown. However, some churches made effective use of “online” social media for worship, prayer and fellowship activities during the lockdown period while others supported vulnerable and lonely people with telephone calls and practical help.

The Revd. Dr Suzanne Roberts handed over the presidential baton to Pastor Tim Moody of Moriah Baptist Church, Risca at our Autumn Council meeting on 8th October. The guest speaker was the Revd. Dr Arthur Brown, BMS World Mission Director of Mission. Fifty people, representing 15 churches, were present at the virtual meeting which incorporated elements of an annual general meeting. We also held a successful online Spring Event on 27th March 2021 when the Revd Dr Kang-San Tan, General Director of BMS World Mission and his wife Loun Ling Lee were the guest speakers taking as their theme “Mission Impossible”.

A new booklet, Pray without Ceasing, was launched at the Spring Event. Written and produced by the Revd. Jonathan Forman of Blaenau Gwent Baptist Church, Abertillery, the booklet is one of the main resources used by churches in the Association’s two-year prayer programme and dovetails with a prayer drive organised by the Baptist Union of Wales.

Missional workers the Revd. Jeff Kim and his wife Linda from Los Angeles arrived in Gwent in an initiative jointly arranged by the Baptist Union of Wales and the Association supported by generous financial donations from churches and individuals. They are staying in temporary accommodation at Crosskeys and will be based at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Newbridge for six months where they will learn about Welsh culture and church life under the wing of the Revd. Peter Cho. After an initial “induction” period they will move in a wider circle and are praying for God’s call to a pastorate in Gwent or further afield.

It was encouraging that a number of people from Gwent churches were following the two-year Forge/Ethos training programme arranged by the BUW and run by Cam Roxburgh, National Director, Forge Canada.

Meetings continued between the fellowship at Zion Baptist Church, Cwmcarn and Association representatives. The Association’s previous commitment to provide pastoral care and partner the church in establishing a strong “outreach” work in the area was reaffirmed.

## Section D Achievements and performance

Grants were made to support the ministry and mission work at Elim Baptist Church, Pontllanfraith and Moriah Baptist Church, Risca. The Association supported financially some new and continuing students at Cardiff Baptist College and donations were also made to ICE Wales and towards the costs of producing the booklet Pray without Ceasing.

The Association’s Church Directory 2021 booklet was distributed to all our churches but we were unable to produce planned issues of our newsletter Contact. However, we thank Tim Moody for preparing presidential letters which were circulated directly to church contacts and placed on our website. Our superintendent, the Revd. Mark Thomas of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Blackwood also did sterling work keeping in contact with the churches.

Looking ahead, the Association is planning to further develop initiatives linked to training, fellowship, celebration and support, all of which will be mission-focused subject to any further Covid19 regulations in Wales. We do not want to lose those lessons learned and good practices which we had to adopt to keep in touch and encourage one another during the lockdown.
