Experience has shown that we need to modify our strategies. In the matter of food there is a clear need for diversity of nutrition. At brightlights a client led initiative led to the planting of coffee, this valuable product was sold to buy a variety of food stuffs that could not be grown. It became clear that buying from suppliers left us facing 500 – 1000% price increase due to scarcity we found for instance the Entebbe school was being offered stolen charity food as depicted in the videos we demanded. We had to find a method to provide food and avoid this corruptive practice. We encouraged spare land to be planted as a hedge against these price escalations that led us to be at the mercy of rain variation, the final practice which has proved sucessful was to find farmers close to a water supply who were willing to pump to keep their crops viable, our agents waited until the harvest was ready offer 10% of the value to bring in the harvest and got the crop at 1/6th the market price. This built relationships with farmers and cut out the inadvertant practice of buying stolen food. The Katanga children’s project then milled the grain and distributed it to the other sites.

Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The private pharmacy has drastically cut hospital admissions by stocking drugs for the 8 most common children’s diseases. A pharmacy in each community is needed in light of dirt tracks being washed away in the rainy season.

Provision of computer equipment after assisting in electricity being installed has already led to mid term improvement in children’s grades. Improved nutrition and medical care seems set to have an exponential improvement in pupil acheivement.

Our communities have only experienced 3 deaths which is 10% of the death rate in the surrounding villages bearing in mind we support 1200 children which is growing each year.
