Wave Forward Report of the Trustees For the year ended 31 December 2024

The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their report and the financial statements for the charity for the year ended 31 December 2024. The Trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (FRS102) (effective 1 January 2015).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives of the Organisation

The principal objective of the organisation, as set out in its Governing Document, is:

For the public benefit to promote, protect and relieve the mental health of children and young people living in the district of South Lakeland and the surrounding area.

Wave Forward was created in 2020 after young people confirmed they wanted new opportunities to improve their mental health as other services were only available to those with the highest levels of need (such as self harm), had increasing waiting lists (often over 12 months), and offered little or no choice, for those who still needed support. Young people also confirmed that their fears of discrimination and stigma and negative experience of other services, particularly their disempowering ‘done to’ approach, meant they often chose not to access support even when offered.

Wave Forward has addressed these challenges by being youth led and youth focused. Young people developed our name and brand, and continue to inform our strategy, co-design our services, and facilitate monitoring to ensure we work with rather than to or for them. Young people, as trustees, have also worked with the rest of the board and staff to pilot and then establish our counselling and peer support services, and develop opportunities for outreach, as well as to secure funding, build partnerships, and develop policies, procedures and systems. Young people also proposed, and are now creating “The Helm” as a network of peer support groups to lead campaigns, events and projects and act as a shadow board, to help drive the changed need for others to thrive.

There were no changes in the period in the policies adopted by the company in order to further its objectives.

Governance and Management of the Organisation

The organisation is registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation

The organisation is governed by its Board of Trustees, consisting of not less than 3 members, which meets at least 6 times per year.

The activities of the organisation (in furtherance of its objective) are delivered by a team of staff, freelance contractors, and volunteers and through agreements with partner organisations.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Review of financial position

During 2024 Wave Forward used funds secured in previous financial years to complete and then review its counselling and peer support pilot projects with the intention of then permanently establishing these services in 2024 by further expanding our fundraising.

Future plans and commitments

The finances of the organisation are considered by the Trustees to be sufficient to meet all existing commitments.

Connected charities

The charity is not connected with, or affiliated to, any similar charities.

Reserves

At the end of each financial year, any surplus unresticted funding is transferred into the reserves of the organisation with the aim of setting aside the equivalent of three months average turnover to cover any unforseen costs and ensure financial sustainability.

Once the reserves target is achieved, any further surplus wil be designated and used by the trustees to invest in the further achievment of the objective of the organisation.

Recruitment and appointment of trustees

Appointment of trustees

Trustees are recruited through an open and transparent process to ensure that the board has the range of skills and experience needed to successfully achieve our objective and deliver our strategy business plan.

Trustees will periodically undertake a skills audit and use this information to recruit further trustees and ensure the organisation has a diverse board of five individuals.

Trustees' responsibilities

The trustees are required to prepare accounts which give a true and fair view of the financial position of the organisation at the end of each financial year.

In preparing the accounts the trustees are required to:

a) select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently.

b) make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.

c) follow applicable accounting standards, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the accounts.

d) prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that this basis applies.

The trustees are responsible for maintaining proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the accounts comply with all relevant legislation. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a "true and fair view" and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINERS STATEMENT

I have completed my examination. I can confim that no material matters have come to my attention in

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
