Club Structure and purposes
Banbury Lions Club (CIO) are part of Lions Clubs International Multiple District 105 which covers the UK & Ireland and were founded in 1968 receiving their Lions Charter in 1969.
As a Lions Club one of our purposes is to "serve local communities" and Lions principles to which the clubs must adhere include "acting to benefit the public interest". Administrative costs at local, national and international level are covered by a modest annual membership fee, which means that monies raised by fundraising are spent supporting good causes (mainly registered charities, but also including some charitable grants to individuals and organisations).
Trustees and Club Activities
Club Trustees are recruited when Lion members are voted to the post of President, Secretary and Treasurer. They are invited to complete the trustee application forms.
The trustees are independent and make their own decisions, but as a Lions charity they will take into account national appeals and guidance as part of their decision making.
Examples of activities undertaken by this club in the past include:
-
Advancement of citizenship: Encouraging people to volunteer (e.g. providing volunteer and leadership opportunities; marshalling at local community events);
-
Promoting the Voluntary Sector for the public benefit by associating with local authorities in a common effort to advance education and provide facilities in the interests of social welfare, etc:
Making grants to charities and supporting them in their charitable activities by liaising with other bodies and volunteers (e.g. liaising and working with the ambulance service, fire service, police, local council and Age Concern in relation to the "Message in a Bottle" and "Message in a Wallet" schemes; running social events such as Race Nights or Christmas Party for Leonard Cheshire Home, Guardian Court, Banbury Evergreens and other groups.
-
Promoting volunteering: recruiting new Lion members to support volunteering; encouraging members of the wider community to volunteer to support Lions events and those of other charities; running events for elderly/disabled people who might otherwise be socially isolated; providing volunteering opportunities and leadership experiences for young people by encouraging younger people (e.g. from local schools) to get involved with fundraising activities – although fundraising is not itself a charitable object, it is how the charity raises the funds necessary to make grants; encouraging people generally to volunteer their time to events, and/or provide social activities for elderly people who might otherwise be at risk of social isolation; providing grants to help fund voluntary projects overseas (e.g. a young person taking a gap year to teach English or help build a school); recruiting new members to support volunteering; organising fundraising events (e.g. a Horse Ride) and encouraging nonLions to volunteer their time.
-
Relief of poverty and relief of those in need…:
-
Responding to local and Lions District appeals for funding to support those in need.
-
Advancement of health:
-
Message in a Bottle and Message in a Wallet already mentioned;
-
participating in the Lions Recycle Spectacles for Sight Scheme;
-
Participating in the Dentaid Scheme in supplying surplus dental equipment;
-
Providing grants to Katharine House hospice;
-
Supporting local disabled groups who assist people with disabilities to live independent lives.
-
Environment: grant funding e.g. Centenary project with "Redlands Garden”.
-
Community involvement: acting as stewards and supporting local events such as Town Santa’s Grotto and organising the Banbury Teddy Bears Picnic.
- 2020 2021 Activities
Due to the Covid pandemic opportunities to fund raise were limited but we managed to obtain some grants for food banks and community use and fulfilled requests for some donations for local and Lions Clubs International requests from the grants and existing charity account.
