## **African Caribbean Medical Mentors**

## **Charitable Objective**

The promotion of equality and diversity for the public benefit by seeking to address the underrepresentation of students of African Caribbean descent studying Medicine and Dentistry at universities in the United Kingdom and working as professionals in the fields of medicine and dentistry as a whole and to reduce the socio-economic barriers that often affect people of African Caribbean descent in entering those professions.

## **Our Vision and Mission**

In particular African Caribbean Medical Mentors seeks to:

·         increase the number of people of African Caribbean descent studying and practicing Medicine and Dentistry;

·         improve their likelihood of success in applications to Medical and Dental school;

· provide a network for communication, support, assistance and empowerment of people of African Caribbean descent in the fields of medicine and dentistry.

with the vision of creating a more diverse and representative healthcare system which reflects society as a whole.

## **Chairperson’s Report**

African Caribbean Medical Mentors (ACMM) celebrated it’s fifth year running this year. We have developed a more minimalistic approach whilst we begin to restructure and develop, taking time to focus on becoming a more thorough and focussed team. We’re extremely grateful for those who continue to support and champion us as we could not continue without our supporters and volunteers!

We’ve managed to have several online events and continue our mentoring scheme, providing support to those in need.

With our work, we continue to strive to create a world that allows all to have a fair and equal opportunity, despite race or socio-economic background and thank everyone who has supported us so far.

## **Trustee’s Report**

Over the past year, despite some changes in our leadership structure, African Caribbean Medical Mentors has been able to achieve some positive milestones. We have hosted 4 virtual events with over 100 virtual attendees covering topics from relocating as a doctor to interview preparation.

We have increased our reach on social media with over 4,500 followers on our social media platforms which allows us to support and encourage those within our community and provide a safe space for growth and reflection.

We successfully ran our mentoring programme for both prospective Medics and Dentists with over 30 mentor relationships in 2022.

In September 2020, ACMM launched our first ever e-book series to support those of African and Caribbean descent in applying to Medicine and Dentistry. We created a personal statement guide, an interview guide and one of the initiatives we are most proud of - our black student survival guide. This original e-book provides first hand experiences of being a black medical or dental student across 46 medical and dental schools within the UK and abroad. With invaluable information on the university experience from a black student’s perspective, the guide aids prospective students in choosing a medical or dental school they will feel most comfortable at, providing realistic information to students about the things that matter to them. Since our development of e-books, we’ve had 444 downloads and hope to see this grow over the coming year.

Every single one of our initiatives rely on volunteers. We created our ambassador network in 2018 - a pool of over 400 medical students, dental students, doctors and dentists who volunteer to take part in or run our initiatives and support our prospective students. From reading personal statements to providing yearly mentorship, our volunteers are an integral part of seeing out our mission.

We look forward to seeing how we can further support our community over the next year.
