## **Charitable Objective**

The promotion of equality and diversity for the public benefit by seeking to address the underrepresentation of students of African Caribbean descent studying Medicine and Dentistry at universities in the United Kingdom and working as professionals in the fields of medicine and dentistry as a whole and to reduce the socio-economic barriers that often affect people of African Caribbean descent in entering those professions.

## **Our Vision and Mission**

In particular African Caribbean Medical Mentors seeks to:

·         increase the number of people of African Caribbean descent studying and practicing Medicine and Dentistry;

·         improve their likelihood of success in applications to Medical and Dental school;

· provide a network for communication, support, assistance and

empowerment of people of African Caribbean descent in the fields of medicine and dentistry.

with the vision of creating a more diverse and representative healthcare system which reflects society as a whole.

## **Chairperson’s Report**

African Caribbean Medical Mentors (ACMM) celebrated it’s fourth year running this year with many changes occurring to the way we work. With the COVID-19 pandemic and eyes shifting onto racism and police brutality - the last year has been a challenging one for many of the people who volunteer with us and use our services. These worldwide issues have highlighted the importance of what we do and encouraged us to work harder to create a more equal and just healthcare environment. We’re extremely grateful to these people for continuing to support and champion us despite the difficult times they have been experiencing as without them, ACMM would not thrive in the way that it has.

With the pandemic, we have transitioned to providing all of our services virtually including our events, resources and mentoring but have still been able to provide useful and impactful services.

With our work, we continue to strive to create a world that allows all to have a fair and equal opportunity, despite race or socio-economic background and thank everyone who has supported us so far.

## **Trustee’s Report**

Over the past year, despite the pandemic, African Caribbean Medical Mentors has been able to achieve some positive milestones. We have hosted 11 virtual events with over 350 virtual attendees covering topics from Mock Interview preparation to managing Social Media as a medic.

Due to the pandemic, we transitioned to virtual events which enabled us to further widen our reach and increase access to our events - a true positive from the change in the way we work currently.

We have increased our reach on social media with over 4,000 followers on our social media platforms which allows us to support and encourage those within our community and provide a safe space for growth and reflection.

We successfully ran our mentoring programme for both prospective Medics and Dentists with over 30 mentor relationships in 2021.

Our initiatives for supporting prospective Medicine and Dentistry students in applying successfully supported record numbers this year.

We run an annual personal statement reviewing service, allowing prospective students of African or Caribbean descent to have their personal statement reviewed for free. Our personal statement reviewing service allowed for over 50 students to have their personal statement reviewed by current medical or dental students, dentists or doctors.

Our annual mock interview service provides the opportunity for prospective students of African or Caribbean descent to have at least one mock interview to prepare them for the Medicine or Dental school interview. We are proud that we were able to provide this service to over 90 prospective students - allowing them to have a better chance of being successful in their Medical or Dental school journey.

In September 2020, ACMM launched our first ever e-book series to support those of African and Caribbean descent in applying to Medicine and Dentistry. We created a personal statement guide, an interview guide and one of the initiatives we are most proud of - our black student survival guide. This original e-book provides first hand experiences of being a black medical or dental student across 46 medical and dental schools within the UK and abroad. With invaluable information on the university experience from a black student’s perspective, the guide aids prospective students in choosing a medical or dental school they will feel most comfortable at, providing realistic information to students about the things that matter to them. Since our development of e-books, we’ve had 246 downloads and hope to see this grow over the coming year.

Every single one of our initiatives rely on volunteers. We created our ambassador network in 2018 - a pool of over 400 medical students, dental students, doctors and dentists who volunteer to take part in or run our initiatives and support our prospective students. From reading personal statements to providing yearly mentorship, our volunteers are an integral part of seeing out our mission.

We look forward to seeing how we can further support our community over the next year.
