Our aim is to inspire children to find out more about music, learn an instrument, maybe perform with others, or simply establish a love of listening to orchestral music for their enjoyment and well-being. We support teachers and our musicians to develop skills and help teachers to build confidence to deliver inspiring music education and utilise the benefits of music on children's all-round ability to learn. ## **Summary of the Main Activities** In July 2021, the government announced the new plan re Covid-19. Schools began their new academic year with much uncertainty as the winter period moved in. Everyone was hesitant as they navigated a whole new way of living. It was clear that we had to adapt too. **____________________________________________________________________________________________________** Kidenza (Charity Reg: 1190855) Annual Report and Accounts 2021-22 3 **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE** ## **Small Ensemble** This small but perfectly formed ensemble of just five musicians is a new addition this year to what we usually offer. Aiming to address the issue of affordability, without compromising on quality and sound, concerts with this ensemble have proved to be every bit exciting as the whole orchestra! The free film resource (featuring this ensemble) has enabled schools to ‘try before they buy’ the full orchestra and has received excellent feedback. The musicians also valued the more intimate connection they could build with the audience. _“Thank you to you and your team for yesterday. The children are still buzzing!!!! **____________________________________________________________________________________________________** Kidenza (Charity Reg: 1190855) Annual Report and Accounts 2021-22 6 ## **Whole Orchestra** Our first whole orchestra concert was at Chailey Heritage School - a non-maintained, Ofsted awarded 'outstanding' special school for children and young people from nursery age up to 25yrs, with complex neuro-disabilities, high health needs, sensory impairments, and associated learning difficulties. This was a hugely emotional day for everyone: our last live concert was in December 2019 at Chailey and our first concert as we emerged from the pandemic was at Chailey! It was wonderful to be back playing as a whole orchestra and in such special surroundings with a most wonderful audience. The concerts at Chailey are like no other. We position ourselves in the centre of the room with lots of space between the musicians to always allow easy movement of wheelchairs. Resonance boards are positioned in front of the percussion section for those pupils with multi-sensory impairment. The room is buzzing with young people who would never have such intimate access like this to an orchestra. Carers are emotional as they witness extraordinary reactions of the children to the music. The children work together to compose a soundtrack to accompany a poem that will then be performed. Essentially, the children will be composers, musicians and perform in their very own orchestra. These workshops are delivered by either our conductor or our animateur. The workshop this year was for year 3 pupils at Curwen Primary School in East London. We are hoping to develop our series of workshops as they seem to be a very accessible and affordable way for schools to experience Kidenza. ## **Building Partnerships** **____________________________________________________________________________________________________** Kidenza (Charity Reg: 1190855) Annual Report and Accounts 2021-22 10 For many years, we have worked with the music education hubs throughout the Southeast of England. Realising the importance of formalising these relationships to improve outcomes for all parties we became official partners with West Sussex Music, Kent Music, and The Sussex Music School. We have also had some communications with Create Music - a collaboration of the educational services of Brighton & Hove Music & Arts and East Sussex Music. ## **Staff and Trustees** In December 2021 we saw the resignation of our Chair of Trustees, Charles Bradley. Barbara Stilwell took over this role following a unanimous decision from the board. Salaried staff – CEO Projects and Marketing – part-time. Self-employed. ## **Statement confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.** The Trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011. They believe that Kidenza is achieving and continually improving its public benefit remit by the provision of music education to young people through school concerts, workshops, and online activities, especially at a time when government funding for the arts is being cut. **____________________________________________________________________________________________________** Kidenza (Charity Reg: 1190855) Annual Report and Accounts 2021-22 11 ## **FINANCIAL REVIEW** ## **End of Period Financial Review** Following a prolonged period of enforced hibernation due to the pandemic, we experienced a reassuring number of bookings for concerts which in turn generated a small income for Kidenza. ## **Successful Funding Applications** Reconnect Locality Grant £2000 Tesco Groundworks Grant £500 Kidenza has no debt and there are reserves to cover expected costs for the coming year. ## **Policy for Holding Reserves** Kidenza holds two financial reserves. 1. Generic administration and family concerts 2. Funding secured for future projects. ## **Reserves Held** 1. £12,465 2. £0.00 ## **Charity Continuing as a Going Concern** The Trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. The minimum number of Trustees is four and the maximum 12. In October 2021 Six trustees were on the board, dropping to five in January 2022. Trustees are appointed for their skill and experience in areas related to the charity’s operation, including music, education, charity management and fundraising. On appointment, Trustees are sent an induction pack with information about the charity and their role.
