“Supporting Wellbeing and Education in our community”
Annual Report to Trustees 2020/21 By David Purslow (Trustee)
Introduction
The Charity was formally registered on 3[rd] August 2020 with the aim to provide a focus for supporting children and young people’s education and wellbeing. The formation of the Charity coincided with the Global Covid19 Pandemic. Initially the Charity remained inactive until November 2020 when it launched the “Christmas Boxes” project. This was followed in the new year by the “IT for all” project.
Finance
Due to Covid restrictions banks have presently frozen all new business. In order to operate the Charity and accept donations we have been using the “Friends of The Martin Wilson School” Lloyds Account and have kept separate ledgers to track both organisations funds. Once the Banks allow new business we will establish a new account in the charities name.
Website
The Domain name SevernCommunity.org has been purchased and website construction in progress to provide a central information source for all our projects. This will also eventually include volunteer and donation links.
Projects Overview
Christmas Boxes Project
The aim was to provide vulnerable children across Shrewsbury with a little extra at Christmas in the form of a box of presents and treats. Children were identified by local Primary Headteachers.
Funding came from a number of sources, with the bulk being a grant from the MCF Covid fund. This was used for purchasing presents for 243 Children aged 3-11. A group of volunteers wrapped the presents and delivered them to home addresses ready for Christmas.

The project yielded £3,300.00 and after all expenses paid resulted in a balance of £397.69. An average of £11 was spent on each child along with a significant addition of books from Shropshire Libraries and treats from Shrewsbury Food Hub. It is presently the aim to roll this out again next year targeting children in Temporary Housing/Refuges and in danger of being homeless across the county, presently this is approximately 250 in total.
IT for all
This project was in response to concerns for children not having suitable access to ICT at home in preparation for Remote learning. An appeal was made for devises which was answered with a number of used tablets and laptops, some of which could not be used. It also resulted in the donation of 6 new Galaxy tablets. Alongside this some monetary donations were made to the sum of £700, which after purchase of further equipment, Domain registration and data to make devices internet ready, left a balance of £288.13 to be used in developing our next project along similar lines. The project supported initial issues with technology poverty in our community until Government devices were delivered later in the term.
Future Projects
Baby Stop
The issue: Whilst running the Food Share Table over the past year it has become evident that this is accessed by a significant number of young families. Some of these attend to stop waste and some to supplement a stretched budget. Some of the most sought after items are baby ones and at present these are scarce due to being spread across a number of food shares. All new parents have to make significant adjustments on the arrival of a baby, not least financially. Some can carry this with ease, however a growing number struggle to keep on top of basics.
The project: To establish a new community facility to stop waste and reuse and recycle Baby items. The aims being to support both environment aware parents and financially vulnerable in providing a quality source for baby products. This will include a focus on corporate donations alongside public charitable goods donations through various collection points across Shrewsbury.
The pilot: Starting on 20[th] April 2021 the project will ask the following via Social Media, leaflet drops and other media outlets:
Outgrown the babygrow? A pack of Nappies too small for them? A must-have item that baby’s not interested in?
Have you any new or nearly new baby items?
We all feel the pinch of a new baby, why not donate any spare items and help make a new family’s life a bit easier.
Gain space and redistribute to new Mums by recycling , reusing and reducing waste’ Let’s put it to good use and stop the waste by donating it to our Baby Stop!

Initially utilising the Martin Wilson School nurture Hub on a twice a month basis, the aim is to eventually develop further satellite operations across the county. The project was proposed by Joanna and Tabitha Purslow who will lead it and establish an additional volunteer base to carry on as the project grows. This will utilise Joanna’s experience in running the Martin Wilson Food Share and emergency food support scheme over the past year.
Finance: Some grant funding is being applied for to buy diverted wholesale stock. Donations will also be invited at the events, although on principal everything is provided free of charge with no referral or means testing in place. The Trust will allocate £100 towards start-up costs to purchase packaging and display items.
Administration
Over the year the school has provided copying and storage space. It is our intention to formalise this if funds eventually allow. However, we will make a donation to the Friends of £150 towards any costs incurred.
