## **1. Street Rights’ Charitable Purpose**
The objects of Street Rights are:
To promote human rights (as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent United Nations conventions and declarations), particularly but not exclusively for street-connected children, throughout the world by all or any of the following means:
- Monitoring abuses of human rights;
- Obtaining redress for the victims of human rights abuse;
- Relieving need among the victims of human rights abuse;
- Research into human rights issues;
- Providing technical advice to government and others on human rights matters;
- Contributing to the sound administration of human rights law;
- Commenting on proposed human rights legislation;
- Raising awareness of human rights issues;
- Promoting public support for human rights;
- Promoting respect for human rights among individuals and corporations;
- International advocacy of human rights;
- Eliminating infringements of human rights.
In furtherance of that object but not otherwise, the trustees shall have power:

To engage in political activity provided that the trustees are satisfied that the proposed activities will further the purposes of the charity to an extent justified by the resources committed and the activity is not the dominant means by which the charity carries out its objects.
## **2. Public Benefit**
The Trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit to review the charity’s aims and objectives and ensure its activities and future-planning are focused on achieving the charity’s aims and objectives.
## **3. Activities, achievements and performance in 2024/25**
Street Rights’ aim is to promote street-connected children’s rights worldwide. This year marked a step change for Street Rights as we moved from planning and building our work to action.
Last year we established a multi-year, collaborative partnership with Umthombo and Centre for Child Law in South Africa. Both Umthombo and Centre for Child Law are highly regarded as experts in their fields and together we are working to secure justice for street-connected children in South Africa.
In September, we ran consultations with street-connected children and young people in Durban, on the east coast of South Africa. The consultations represent phase 1 of our programme and enable us to understand street-connected children’s lives, the issues they currently face and that they themselves identify to be the most urgent.
In Durban, the consultations highlighted huge poverty, unsanitary living conditions, high youth unemployment and unstable employment in the informal economy, police harassment and violence, high drug dependency (males), children removed from their mother’s care (females) and aspirations for a better life.
Participation was embedded into the consultation process. The children and young people were involved in the planning and analysis of the sessions. They determined what questions were asked and in what way, for instance childcare was provided for the mothers with babies so they could focus on the discussion. As streetconnected children are a highly marginalised and vulnerable group, we obtained ethical approval from the University of Pretoria for the consultations and our structure and facilitation activities were guided by the award-winning _Growing Up On The Streets_ research project. Facilitators were adults who the children and young people know and trust.
One learning from the consultations was that there is limited legal knowledge amongst street-connected children and young people. As a result, we facilitated an additional learning session with the Centre for Child Law and the children and young people in Durban to better understand their rights on the streets and how the law in South Africa addresses their rights. Staff from the Centre for Child Law facilitated a knowledgesharing session and produced a child-friendly leaflet the children and young people could use as a future reference.

Our aim into next year is to recreate these consultations in different locations to generate a national picture of street-connected children’s lives across South Africa.
We remain a member of the Consortium for Street Children – the global network for street children organisations – both to learn from our peers and contribute to the sector.
## **4. Structure, Governance and Management**
The Trustees are responsible for the administration of the charity. The Trustees meet quarterly (four times a year) to agree and set the charity’s strategic direction, discuss policy matters and review the operational performance of the charity. This includes through reviewing and updating the charity’s risk register and putting policies and procedures in place to mitigate those risks.
Street Rights’ Constitution sets out how new Trustees are appointed – existing Trustees can appoint new Trustees at any time. When selecting new Trustees, regard is had to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for effective administration of Street Rights. Trustees serve for a period of three years and can be reappointed up to three times.
Street Rights currently has one volunteer, part-time.
## **5. Financial review 2024/25**
The Trustees are responsible for preparing the annual report and financial review of Street Rights.
## Income and expenditure:
Street Rights’ income was £4 and expenditure £3,585 for the period 2024/25. A total of £718 was carried forward.

Street Rights has no loans, no debts and no funds held by a custodian Trustee.
## Reserves:
The Trustees have considered the risk environment and operating costs of the organisation and have determined a desired range of reserves to be within three to six months’ operating costs plus any legal or redundancy costs associated with winding-up the organisation. At present there are no committed ongoing

costs and any wind-up costs would be very limited. The reserves as of 31[st] March 2025 are therefore within the required range.
As the organisation increases its income and begins to incur ongoing operating costs, the unrestricted reserves will be reviewed against the reserves policy as part of the management accounts and going-concern assessment by the Board of Trustees.
