Achievements and Perfomiance
We started the new Lionists"c year in a sound financial position which gave us the
confidence to look at expanding the ways in which we can help to support our local
community. The challenges of rising food and fijel prices coupled with high inflation
continue to present challenges. The success of the club depends on its members and
the Trustees would like to thank all members. old and new, for their continued support.
During the year 2023-2024 the dub gained five new members and seven members
resigned.
This report illustrates the highlights of the yearfs acttvities and demonstrates the
commitment of the dub to seNe.
International
Although our focus as Ironbridge Lions is very much on supporting our local community.
we are also proud to be able to respond to disasters wherever they occur in the worfd.
The plight of refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine continues to be in our thoughts
and we have provided goods to those who have been rehoused in Telford.
Our Local Community
Ironbridge Gorge is a UNESCO World Heriiage site and the wodd's first cast iron bridge
is a major local tourist attraction. Ironbridge Lions have been running Silver Over the
Bridge (SOB) events Sin￿ 1979. On a series of Sundays each summer we invite
passers-by to lay their spare coins on a strip of sticky tape on the iron bridge. wrth the
ambition of getting a line of coins from one side of the river to the other.
Each event raises funds which are donated to local charities.
During the period of this reFX)rt we organised seven SOB events.. Broseley 1st
Responders, Haycop Conservation Group, Newport Visually Impaired, Telford
Parkinson's Support Group, Madeleylstirchley Guides & Scouts and one for our Prostate
Screening. Unfortunately. due to indement weather The Buildwas Players SOB was
can￿lled. A donation from our charity fund was given to them in lieu.
on￿ again we assisted the Ironbridge Corade Trust at their annual Coracle Regatta
manning the (xr park. the proceeds of which were shared with the Trust. and ran two
stalls which raised funds forthe Club. The small boats known as coracles have a history
dating back beyond the Roman invasion and at one time the River Sevem boasted
more coracles than any other British river.

The Ironbridge Santa and Sleigh is a Christrnas tradttion dating back many years. Every
year we meet people. now grandparents, who remember their excitement as children.
when the sleigh came down their road. Unable to tour public roads due to road safety
regulations, we now take Santa and his Sleigh to local supemiarkets. schools and care
homes. These visits allow us to engage with local residents who very generously donate
food and money. all of which is recycjed lo1211y.
Throughout the year we attend many local events. running the car park or providing
stalls such as ourTeddyTombola or NerfGun Challenge, both of which are very popular
with all ages. For the first time we attended the Festival of Colours at Wrekin College
organised by the Dharm Association. These opportunities help us to raise our profile,
generate funds and have a good time interacting with the public.
The Club continues to make several donations. either monetary or goods. to local
groups and individuals. The past year has been no exception and those helped include
Broseley 1st Responders, Telford Crisis Support. Cuan Wildlife Rescue. Shropshire
Anny Cadet Force, Brain Tumor Research. CVS Autism Hub, Brookside Community
Centre. Afghan Refugees. Christmas Smiles. Lions Sight Savers. Woodentops Nursery,
A Better Tomo￿oW (ABT). YMCA. STAY. Maninplace. Salvation Amiy (Oakengates)
and KIP.
Hèalth
Over the past seven years Ironbridge Lions. has organised several prostate screening
events. This yearwe held such events. in March and June. Ourappointment system
worked extremely efficiently. Queuing for a test is now virtually eliminated.
Hunger
Collecting food to support those in need at Christmas has been part of our annual
progr8mme for many years and, sadly, the need for support has only grown over that
time. Starting in early November we attempt to collect some four tonnes of non-
perishable foodstuff that we sort and repack into food parcels for those in crisis at
Christmas. The collections take many fomis
large, organised street collections.
individuals collecting in their own neighbourhood. plus collections in schools, clubs, and
workplaces. The overwhelming response enabled us to distribute 427 food parcels over
the festive period.
Recognising that food poverty is not just a seasonal matter, we have been collecting
and distributing food throughout the year.

Childr@n
The Club is always open to ideas that provide an OPFK)rtunity to help young people by
meeting need or achieving ambitions.
Over the course of the past year. we have made a donation to SMADA, a charity group
supporting music at Abraham Darby Academy in Madeley. The Academy has a
formidable musical reputation and SMADA'S main aim is to raise funds to support all
the bands within the Academy at the various conTrrts. events and festivals. The charity
also aids students with music grade examination fees. presents con￿rtS to support
musical development and assists other local organisations in their fvndraising.
A further donation was made to the POD Children's Charity a nationwide charity that
organises entertainment for children in hospitals. induding the prin￿SS Royal {PRH)
Telford. Founded in 1977 POD now gives monthly show5 in 150 h05Pitals and hospices
across the UK. aiming to alleviate the trauma of a hospttal stay with fun and laughter.
Our donation will ensure the continuation of a regular monthly performance at PRH.
The Club also contributed towards CVS Young Carers. summer outing and provided
goods and services to Woodentops Day Nursery and Christrnas Smiles. The later
charity has the aim to ensure that every child receives a Christmas present.
Recognition
District Govemor Bary Prior attended our 45th Charter Lunch. held in March 2024.
At the handover ￿remonY in June which this year took the fomi of a sknttles evening,
VP Kevan awarded Lion John Toll Lrfe Membership of the Club in recognition of his 40
years of Servi￿ to the community.
A very generous donation of £4.500 was re￿iVed from a member of the public.
Once again the Trustees would like to thank all our members, friends, families, and the
local communities for their continued support as we look forward to an even better
2024125 Lionistic year.

Ptlnciple sources of funds
The traditional sources of income are our Santa & Sleigh Christmas collections, the
Prostate Screening sessions. bucket collections, our Silver Over the Bridge events and
individual donations. All these activities benefitted from Gift Aid that we are able to claim
from HMRC.
Principle risks facing the charity and mitigation
The primary risks are around the state of the economy. which is signfficantly impacting our
ability to raise funds. while simultaneously creating an increased demand for services. The
previously expressed secondary nsks of membership and the member age profile have, to
a degree. been mitigated by a marked increase in younger member numbers although this
benefit is partially offset by a reduction in available volunteer hours.
Members continually engage with our local community and refine ways to focus on the
most deprived in the communities we serve.
Structure, Governance and Management
The Club is managed and govemed in accordance with the By-Laws and Constitution of
Ironbridge and Severn Gorge knons Club (CIO). a Charitable Incorporated Organisation

lo discuss all club actiwties, these meetings make recommendations to the formal business

All elected officer5 of this Lions Club shall be duly appointed Trustees of the Club. The
President. Secretary and Treasurer are ex-officio trustees. The Club also has two additional
member trustees who are elected at the Club AGM. each seNing for a period of two years.
