# **Minutes St Saviour’s Church, Retford Election of Churchwardens and Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) Sunday 15[th] May 2023 at 11.45 hrs** 

**1. Welcome & Opening Prayer** : Ben opened with a prayer on the theme ‘Giving thanks’.

**7. Appointment of Auditors** : Ben advised that we approved the continued use of Wright Vigor at our Annual Church Meeting in May 2022. It was proposed to undertake a review for 2023 to ensure best value. Proposed by Mark Priddle and seconded by Mark Barnett.

## **REPORTS** 

## **Vicar’s Report** 

2023 was the first year since the pandemic that has been free of restrictions. There were many encouragements at St Saviour’s which are detailed in the below reports. Some particular highlights for me have included: 

- Spending time with each other at our Church Lunches – these have happened roughly every other month and been a great opportunity to reconnect with each other and enjoy some fabulous food. 

- Seeing people get involved often in new ways including Mike Newby as treasurer and Stuart Bradford as deputy-churchwarden. 

- The Baptism of Megan Phillips by full-immersion 

- The Church Weekend at Home with David and Claire Hughes teaching on the story of the Prodigal Son. 

- Again welcoming Carr Hill School Choir to our Harvest service which has led to new faces attending Lego Club and other family events and services 

- The dedication of those who continue to serve across our church activities and outreach. Thank you! 

As ever 2023 saw a number of changes at St Saviour’s. One of these was Traidcraft ceasing trading and Kathy and Graeme stepping back from co-ordinating our Fairtrade Stall. We thank Kathy & Graeme for their work championing Fairtrade over a number of years. In the early months of 2024 we also said goodbye to Prue Hall our church administrator who has done a great job particularly increasing our income from the Community Centre. 

I’m conscious that for many of us 2023 was a year of loses with a number of St Saviour’s church members dying, some before their time. I will particularly remember Andy Walker, a former treasurer, and Una Dent, a valued PCC member and occasional leader of the Music group, both of whom had their funerals at St Saviour’s in 2023. We mourn their loss whilst trusting they are safe with their Saviour Jesus Christ. 

Like many churches post-pandemic, despite successful fundraising and the generous giving of many St Saviour’s faces financial challenges. We will need to continue to address these in 2024, particularly as we continue to seek to maintain our buildings for the years to come. 

I’m always grateful for all who serve at St Saviour’s in big and small ways and particularly for the support and encouragement of our retired clergy Andrew Pearse, Bryony Wood and Dick Lewis who have generously provided wisdom and service cover. And for the support and encouragement of our wardens (Martin Dawson, Ali Barnett, Barbara Newbold and Stuart Bradford). 

May Jesus remain our Good Shepherd as we continue to seek to show and share his love in 2024 and beyond.

## **Church Council (PCC)** 

The PCC continued to meet bi-monthly throughout 2023. We are keen to encourage new members to help manage our parish, share the workload and provide inspiration to guide our future. St Saviour’s also has 2 seats for lay representatives at the Deanery Synod. 

Copies of the minutes of each meeting are available on request. Do have a look and see what the PCC does and please feel free to raise any questions with the secretary. 

The PCC is remarkable democratic, all decisions are made by Ben in consultation with the PCC. Issues discussed over the course of 2023/2024 include: 

- Are we still and do we wish to continue to be a “fair-trade” church? Yes, we are working on it, slightly more difficult than previous with the collapse of Traidcraft and no fair-trade stall any more. 

- All PCC members encouraged to do their Safeguarding training. 

- Stuart has given updates on work on the church fabric, especially fire safety critical improvements. 

- Finance is mentioned every meeting, with discussions about how much of the Parish Share we can afford to pay (decision made at a special meeting in January) and a contingency was proposed but never actually needed to hold some winter services in the church hall as it is several times cheaper to heat than the church itself. 

- Planning future events and dates of services over Christmas. 

- A review of our mission partners, the idea being to give more to a smaller number, and ones that we have contact with or are especially worthwhile such as the African Pastors’ Fellowship. 

- At every meeting Ben leads a short devotional and we go through some simple mission-focussed materials on sharing our faith: _mission is a team game_ , _who led us to Christ?_ & _welcoming newcomers_ for example.

## **Churchwardens** 

2023 proved to be a busy time in the life of St. Saviour's church family. Through the strength that God gives us we have achieved much. Many of these achievements are covered in the individual reports that follow, so we have tried not to duplicate the information. 

The 8th of January brought us together for our first Bring and share church family lunch, giving us the opportunity to eat delicious food and spend time together. They have continued through the year, if you haven't tried one yet, we suggest you do it's a great way to get to know each other better. 

We tried to offer a Warm space of welcome to our local community in February and March, but this was not taken up, we think we are too far out of town to be useful in that way. 

Christian Aid weekly Lent Lunches went ahead from the 24th of February, in our Community centre, with different Retford churches providing lunch to raise money for the charity. 

St. Saviour's hosted the World day of prayer (for our bit of the world!) on March 3rd , this was well attended. 

The 11th of March saw the return of our, now legendary, Jumble and Nearly new sale, when £3,500 was raised for our church and community centre funds. This is an event which invites people into our church buildings, giving us the opportunity to engage with many members of our local community. Our surplus items are distributed to charities both local and further afield. It benefits many, as well as our church. 

Easter was an amazing celebration of our Risen Lord. The beautifully arranged church flowers, once again, helped to lift our hearts in Praise. 

A first for St. Saviour's, in April, was a full immersion Baptism for Megan, at the time a regular member of our church family. It was a challenge to make this happen in a dignified manner, Ben and Jackie were invaluable in this regard. The logistics of filling the pool and emptying it afterwards caused concern, thankfully Martin had some previous experience of this and was helped by John Collins. It was a Spirit filled celebration, which touched everyone. Megan and her son Max have since moved out of Retford, but come back to see us when they are able. 

King Charles the third was crowned on the 6th of May, the church was decorated accordingly, and there was a Bring and Share lunch on the 7th. 

At the beginning of July we held a Church Weekend at Home, our speaker was David Hughes and he delivered interesting, challenging teaching. There was good food and fellowship and lots of fun too! 

Our monthly prayer meetings evolved into prayer lunches in August. Meetings begin at 12 noon, we pray for around half an hour,  and then share a simple lunch. 

Remembrance Sunday was different for us this year, breakfast was offered in the Community centre at 9 am, then we either walked, or took to our cars, to join others for the town act of Remembrance in the Market square.  We warmed up afterwards with coffee in town.

A very well attended Memorial service was organised by Hurton's funeral directors on the 3rd of December followed by refreshments. 

Our beautifully decorated church was as busy as usual over the Christmas season. School Carol services, the Candlelit Carol Service, a Nativity Service, Midnight Communion and Christmas morning celebration, kept us all busy and worshipping Jesus together. 

We welcomed Stuart Bradford, joining Barbara Newbold as a deputy warden, in June. Stuart has willingly taken on the Wednesday Communion service, and many other tasks, and has become an invaluable member of our team. St. Saviour's could not function without the help of all our dedicated, hardworking church family. Thank you! We all hope we have succeeded in supporting Ben and helping in his ministry to us and our community.

## **Deanery Synod** 

Deanery Synod meetings put great emphasis on encouragement and the sharing of the good news happening in churches. 

There have been discussions on Parish Share and updates on the vacancies in the Deanery, many of which are long standing. Living in Love and Faith was a major item on the agenda at General Synod and this filtered down to the Deanery Synod throughout the year.   Parish share was calculated differently for 2024, following a review by the Diocese, acknowledging it is a huge struggle to give when costs are going up.  The Deanery expressed its appreciation of the contributions all the churches make throughout the year. 

In ‘guest speaker’ slots, Zoe Ball has shared the work 100 Homes are doing to help foster children and recruit new foster carers from churches in the County and Bryony Wood has introduced her book ‘The Sound of Musings’ and talked about its use in home groups. 

Meetings are supportive and positive, with regular acknowledgement for the major contributions made by churchwardens, PCCs and retired clergy who faithfully serve our churches, especially those in vacancy.

## **Electoral Roll** 

At the Annual Meeting in May 2023 the electoral roll stood at 93 persons. 

After the revision of the roll in April 2024 the roll totalled 90 persons.

## **Fabric Report** 

Our latest Quinquennial inspection was carried out in March 2024 by our new architect, Peter Rogan, the last quinquennial having expired in 2023. The Quinquennial report will take several months to come through, once this is complete it will form a list of work that needs completing and its urgency. In addition to the instruction of a quinquennial, it is also necessary to instruct an electrical quinquennial inspection.

Our compliance policies were completed during the lock down. We now need to ensure that all the health and safety, fire risk policies and maintenance policies are implemented. This is a heavy responsibility for the churchwardens and support will be required. Stuart Bradford, Deputy Warden, has started to implement the Health and Safety Policy but we need volunteers to support the implementation of the Fire Risk and Maintenance Policies. These volunteers are equally likely to require others to assist them. If there are any volunteers who feel able to help, we would be very keen to hear from them. 

In the meantime, we are reviewing the compliance policies, something we are required to do on a regular basis.

## **Mission & Charity Partners** 

St Saviour’s continues to support a number of different international and national mission and charitable organisations and individuals who work both locally and around the world. In 2023 the PCC gave 10% to overseas mission and charity partners and 2% to national or local organisations. 

During 2023 the PCC discussed reducing the number of charities we support to give more focus support to them. From 2024 it was agreed to focus support on the following 

- Al & Lex Hamilton and their family serving with CMS (Church Missionary Society), 

- CPAS (Church Pastoral Aid Society 

- APF (African Pastors' Fellowship) 

- Former members of St Saviour’s Helen & Nigel Spencer serving with Teach Beyond 

- Simeon’s Trustees (St Saviour’s Patron) 

- Transforming Notts Together 

- Bassetlaw Foodbank 

Most partners provide regular updates on their activities and are very grateful for our support and partnership both financially and in prayer. The fluctuations of the pandemic and the loss of Una Dent the main champion of our mission and charity partners has meant our communication and visits have been less regular. However we are in the process of arranging a visit from the Hamilton family later in 2024. We need to work on returning to more regular and consistent communication and prayer in 2024.

## **Music Group** 

The music group consists of 8-10 church members, many of whom have faithfully served in the group for a number of years. For much of the first six months of 2023, music during Sunday services was provided either by the band, led by Janie Matley, or on videos produced by Ben. Due to personal circumstances, Janie has been less available on Sundays for some time and in her absence Jackie has been playing the piano since the summer. The music group now usually meet on a Friday morning to

practise the songs and hymns for Sunday morning which has proved to be a fun (if sometimes a little cold) time together. The group have introduced a number of new songs to the church which have been well received and there is always a desire to strike an appropriate balance between traditional and modern songs. Many thanks to those who give of their time and talents so generously each week to enhance our sung worship as a church family.

## **Safeguarding** 

Safeguarding is a vital part of showing God’s love and care to those who come into our church family so they can feel safe and secure at all times. Requirements for training apply to all church volunteers and some also need DBS checks to ensure that any concerns are known about. If you have any queries about training please contact me. If you have any concerns that someone may be subject to abuse of any kind please contact Ben or me – if the danger is immediate contact the Police.

## **Sunday Children’s Group** 

Sunday Club continues to run most Sundays during the 10.30 service. We regularly have 4 or 5 children and occasionally one or two more. We have appreciated the inclusion of a more child-friendly song in church before we leave. 

Our time together follows the pattern of an opening game or activity followed by a song and then a story which is often reinforced by watching a video version. 

We talk about the application of the story to our lives and then pray together before the craft time which follows the theme of the story. During the craft time we often have videos of worship music. 

We finish with some refreshments. 

This past year we have looked at the stories of Peter, Elijah, Creation, and a series on meals with Jesus. 

If anyone would be willing to be a helper on an occasional basis we would be very glad as we only have a small team. Please have a chat with me if you would be willing to consider this.

## **Treasurer’s Report** 

From a financial perspective 2023 was not an easy year for St Saviours Church. Regular monthly giving via direct debit, at £32,565, was our most significant income with the other major sources of revenue being envelopes and casual donations, recovered gift aid (£10,757), hall lettings (£7861), wedding/funeral fees (£6692) and the jumble sale (£3505) giving a total income of £79,008. 

However, we also had some significant costs: 

- The Parish Share had been set at £64,256.00 of which in 2023 we paid just £36000. 

- Insurance £4381, 

- Heating and electricity £6043 (church)

- Heating and electricity £2016 (hall) 

- Cleaning £2247. 

- In addition we paid £13,800 to Peter Rogan and Associates (architectural consultancy services) for their work on designing a church roof repair scheme. 

- • On a positive note we also donated £5,585 to a range of local, national and international charities. 

The net result is that overall reduction in funds of £8,667 with a balance at the end of the year of £44,181. 

Following an extraordinary meeting of the PCC we agreed to make a further payment of £5000 to our 2023 Parish Share but this still left us ~£10k short of meeting our Ministry Cost and ~£23k short of the full contribution (this payment will appear in the 2024 budget sheet) 

Looking forward we might hope to see an increase in our hall letting fees in 2024 and we can plan to have a further Gift Day to appeal for an increase in regular giving (albeit the October Gift Day did not have any appreciable effect on monthly contributions). However, it is unlikely that our revenue will increase significantly and whilst we can try to economise on the major costs such as heating we are unlikely to be able to meet out Parish Share in full even though it has been reduced to £56,000.

## **ABC** 

ABC (Adults, Babies and Children) is our midweek ministry to the under 5s and their parents, grandparents and carers. Numbers vary from week to week but we often average around 15 children plus their adults. On Wednesday afternoons from 1.303pm, the children are able to play with a wide selection of toys, ranging from soft shakers, puzzles and books to dolls, fire engines and the play kitchen. There is also a craft for the children to make each week. 

Half way through the afternoon we take a break for a snack, some nursery rhymes and a short story from the Bible. The children are never too young to hear important truths about Jesus! 

The parents, grandparents and childminders we have regular contact with often tell us how much they value ABC, especially as many of the children who attend were born during lockdown and missed out on so many social experiences. We have seen several families attend other church events such as Lego Club and the Nativity and Christingle services after a first contact with church at ABC and we long to see more of this cross over, along with these families also coming to our Sunday services. 

The group is now led by Jackie and Ali, ably and gratefully assisted by Andrew, Maureen and David along with Bobbi and Sue, two long standing friends of ABC. We would love to hear from anyone else who would enjoy manoeuvring toys, serving refreshments or befriending the families.

## **Girls Night Out** 

2023 saw a somewhat depleted Girls' Night Out team determined to continue in providing a great night out for ladies, in the safe environment of St. Saviour's

Community Centre. We provide a themed evening consisting of a three course meal, a quiz, and entertainment where appropriate. We couldn't do this without our gallant team of men, who regularly turn up to sample the menu, wash up and support us in many ways, even though we confine them to the kitchen. They’ve even admitted they enjoy it...Thanks chaps! 

We celebrated St. Patrick's day on 17th of March, when green outfits and decorations were much in evidence,  and we embraced everything Irish, watching a River Dance video rather than executing it...the Community Centre floor may have suffered! 

On July 14th we travelled back to the roaring twenties for our theme, with an authentic menu and some hilarious attempts to learn the Charleston! Sarah Woodward was the brave lady who attempted the task of teaching us. 

Our Carols by Candlelight, Girls' Night Out version, was held cafe style, in church. Complete with Turkey cobs, mince pies and mulled wine. The Carols and Christmas songs were led by our church music group, who seemed to enjoy themselves a bit too much. Especially the rendition of “I wish it could be Christmas everyday!” Glam Rock Band, Wizard? No contest!! The evening was rounded off with a Christmas message ably delivered by Sue Green, who travelled from Lichfield to be with us. 

We regularly cater for 60 ladies, many of whom come back time after time and thoroughly enjoy being with us and each other. We pray they will be drawn closer to God through the contact they have with our team, and the ladies from our church who regularly support Girls' Night Out.

## **Time Together – Wednesdays PM** 

Our midweek evening time together group continues to meet most weeks to spend time with each other and with God. Over the course of 2023 we have explored a range of passages and topics from the Bible and enjoyed a number of socials. Particular highlights have included the Lent Course on Loving Your Church and the Bible Course held in the autumn, which gave an overview of the Bible’s storyline. The group has been hosted in various church members homes and latterly at the vicarage. It always provides a warm welcome to new members – why not give it a try?

## **Time Together – Thursday AM** 

We continue to meet fortnightly (or weekly for the Lent course) and have looked at a variety of topics which have all been really interesting and promoted great discussion and built up our knowledge and experience of God’s grace. 

We use study notes and questions and/or video presentations to help our understanding. 

An important part of our group is the friendship and support we give each other and the opportunity to pray about situations and share answers to prayer.

## **Grief Café** 

The Café has been open every first Tuesday in the month for two and a half years now. We also had two Workshops last year - one on Wellbeing and one on Sleep. We are planning another hopefully this year on Anxiety. These are for those who come to the Café and also open to anyone. 

Anyone who has lost someone they love can join us no matter how recent or how long ago for support and the chance to meet with others who share some of their experiences and know what the good and bad days feel like. There are tears but also laughter and kindness. 

People come to as many sessions as they want – some are there every time others pop in when they need to – some are referred by social prescribers at their GP. 

Thanks to the dedicated team who come regularly to offer God’s love and compassion.

## **Pies, Peas and Performances** 

Pies, Peas and Performances continues to go from strength to strength. 

With a dedicated team of volunteers and over a dozen events we have welcomed hundreds of people into St Saviour’s over the last year 

Also, we have raised money and contributed to Bassetlaw Food Bank on a regular basis. 

We have a great community of regular supporters who enthuse about the venue, its warmth and the quality of the entertainment provided. 

While some of the artists have a national reputation, we are also able to provide encouragement for local artists, particularly in our annual Christmas event with James Fox, Mark Cantrill, Graham Bottley and Sally Cookson. 

Most events use the community centre, although several have necessitated the use of the church – particularly recently for the visit of Mike Harding where we had over two hundred paying customers. This has shown us that 

1. We are capable of high profile events 

2. Have the team capable of organising such events. For instance we were able to serve over two hundred pies and peas, wash up and be ready for a 7.30 start 

Also, the revenue from ticket sales has enabled us to update our equipment and means that we are self-sufficient. 

Our reputation as a venue is increasing as we regularly receive requests from artists on tour who have heard about us. 

With a packed schedule for the rest of the year we are looking forward to increasing ours and the church profile in the wider community.

## **Churches Together in Retford (CTIR)** 

The CTIR committee meets four times a year and is made up of clergy and lay people from churches across Retford. It provides an opportunity for churches to

share information and coordinate ministry. In addition to this ministers meeting informally on a monthly basis for mutual support and encouragement. In 2023 CTIR again held it’s Christmas carol service in the market square accompanied by a Salvation Army Band and with a good number in attendance. Thanks to Mark Barnett who has represented St Saviour’s in 2023.

## **Christian Aid** 

In 2023 Lent Lunches returned for the first time after the Pandemic. These were successfully held in our Community Centre. I’m grateful to Martin Dawson who has attended meetings. St Saviour’s currently has no official Christian Aid rep, so if anyone would like to volunteer to help with his please do speak to Ben or Martin.

## **School’s Work** 

Our schools work continues to develop amongst the four primary schools in our parish (St Swithun’s Church of England Primary Academy, Carr Hill, Bracken Lane and Thrumpton Lane). Since the departure of Ben Marston in Autumn 2022 I have focussed energy on St Swithun’s and Carr Hill where our links are strongest. I am involved in Collective Worship (weekly at St Swithun’s), lessons, speaking at RE club, facilitating church visits and end of term services. Carr Hill school choir attended our Harvest service in 2023 which has led to families attending other services and events at St Saviour’s. It’s also great that a number of church members serve as school governors (Mark Barnett, Jackie Clayton, Jill Priddle and myself). Our links provide a great opportunity to sensitively share Jesus with staff and children. Let’s pray they continue to develop and grow in 2024 and beyond.

## **Midweek Service** 

This winter this Communion Service moved into the Community Centre. The Service is attended by a number from St Saviour’s and the Deanery. 

We are grateful to Ben and the visiting clergy who preside at this quiet service from the BCP Prayer Book. Our thanks to Jean Mercer for refreshments and Stuart Bradford for setting up the room and help.

## **Lego Club** 

Autumn of 2023 marked the first anniversary of our Lego Club, designed as a stepping stone between our existing schools ministry, family events and all age services. Whilst the Summer of 2023 saw numbers fluctuate, the autumn term saw much more consistent numbers with around 15-18 children attending most weeks plus their parents and carers. We have seen families attend who previously attended ABC, have heard about us through school, publicity or who have been invited by church members. Some families involved in Lego Club have now attended other church events and services including Christmas services.

## **5th Retford Rainbows Brownies & Guides** 

5th Retford Rainbows, Brownies and Guides have had a busy year. In April all the units were represented at the Girlguiding Retford and Bassetlaw Scouts St Georges Day parade and service at St Swithun’s church. At the end of April the guides spent an exciting sleepover at Flip out Trampoline Park at Doncaster. In June the brownies enjoyed a busy activity weekend at PGL Caythorpe where they had a go at climbing /abseiling, zip wire and team building exercises. The August guides attended the Midlands Mega mix camp at Beaudesert campsite Staffordshire for a weekend of fun activities. 

We started the winter term working on the Girl guiding programme doing different themes and badges. In October the Rainbows attended the Rainbow Roundabout – Theme Autumn, hosted by 5th Retford. The Brownies held their annual revels at Tuxford and the Guides had a district themed evening. All three units attended the district carol service at East Markham where the rainbows and brownies sang Away in a manger and the guides did some of the bible readings. We ended the term with a Christmas party 

In the spring term the guides helped to prepare the Christingles for the service at the end of January. In February all the units took part in the division thinking day where they travelled around the five guiding centres doing different activities for each one. 

Throughout the year we have provided the girls with a wide and varied programme offering them new and different experiences to broaden their knowledge and skills
