## **Minutes St Saviour’s Church, Retford Election of Churchwardens and Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM)** 

## **Sunday 8[th] May 2022 at 11.45 hrs** 

**1.** Welcome & Opening Prayer: Ben opened with a prayer on the theme ‘Giving thanks’.

**7.** Appointment of Auditors: Ben advised that we approved the continued use of Wright Vigor at our Annual Church Meeting in April 2021. It was proposed to continue to use this company for the coming year. Proposed by Susie Collins and seconded by Richard Dent.

## **REPORTS** 

## **Vicar’s Report** 

2022 was a year of recovery for St Saviour’s. The first quarter was still impacted by the pandemic with concerns still high and some measures still in place. Despite this we still held a successful all age Mothering Sunday service with Bishop Paul Williams (Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham) and the St Swithun’s School choir. As the year went on the Covid situation improved and by the autumn we were able to hold an all age Harvest service where we were joined by Carr Hill School choir, launch our new afterschool Lego Club and celebrate Christmas with our first full Carol service and Nativity since 2019. 

The year also saw us say a number of significant goodbyes. Julie and John Ockenden moved on to new pastures. They are much missed particularly given Julie’s significant contributions to the music group. I’m grateful to Janie Matley, Sally Cookson and Una Dent and all our musicians and singers who have helped to ensure our music continues to enable us to worship with one heart and voice. We also said goodbye to the Marston family in the autumn as Ben took on a new role as a vicar near Blackburn. He and Sarah’s contributions to our church life over the last few years have been a great encouragement to us all. Since their departure I’ve really appreciated the support of our retired clergy Andrew Pearse and Bryony Wood. We also said goodbye to Bill Gibbings our church administrator and welcomed Prue Hall to the role who has revolutionised the Community Centre’s online presence and booking processes. 

I am thankful for all who have played a part in enabling our ministry and mission over the last year and echo the thanks that is given throughout the reports below. Particular thanks go to those who have helped with our finances. Especially Paul Allison who served as treasurer for most of the year, our former treasurer Andy Walker who helped with the end of year accounts before his untimely death in March 2023 and Mike Newby who has now taken on the role of treasurer as we enter 2023. 2023 also sees our PCC secretary John Collins step down. Changes provide an opportunity for us to reflect on the blessings we have received from those members of our congregation as well as for new people to serve in these roles. Our Churchwardens and deputy (Martin Dawson, Ali Barnett and Barbara Newbold) remain a great support and their consistent service has been a great encouragement to me and is a credit to St Saviour’s. 

We continue to pray for God’s help as we seek to know Jesus better, grow as his family and learn to show and share his love more and more in 2023 and beyond.

## **Church Council (PCC)** 

The PCC met on 9 occasions; all in person. 

We held our 2021 Annual Church Meeting on 8[th] May following our Sunday service. This was held in person and relayed via Zoom to members of the church who might otherwise wish to attend to observe. 

The PCC continued to meet monthly throughout 2022, with the exception of July, August and December. We are reducing the number of meetings slightly in order to avoid overcommitment and repetition wherever possible. We are keen to encourage new members to help manage our parish, share the workload and provide inspiration to guide

our future. St. Saviour’s also has 2 seats for lay representatives at the Deanery Synod. Copies of the minutes of each meeting are available on request. Do have a look and see what the PCC does and please feel free to raise any questions with the secretary.

## **Churchwardens** 

The first event of the year was the return of the jumble sale, the first since lockdown. With the help of church members friends and the local community it raised £3100. 

## _Grief Cafe_ 

Grief Cafe continued its valuable support network for members of the congregation and local people. 

## _Worship Group_ 

Julie and John Ockenden went to live in Bridlington in June; we are grateful for Julie’s leadership particularly during the ‘Covid years’. Janie Matley took a major role in leading the music group. The keyboard has also been played by Sally Cookson & Una Dent. 

## _Curate_ 

Ben Marston, our curate, his wife Sarah and daughters Naomi and Lydia left in October. We are indebted to Ben and his family for their input into our church life during difficult times. Ben is now a vicar in the parish of Darwen, Lancashire. 20 members of the congregation went to his licensing service. 

## _Easter_ 

The children’s egg hunt proved a great success, the church was beautifully decorated with flowers for Easter Sunday. 

## _ABC_ 

ABC leadership was taken on by Jackie Clayton with the support of the remaining members of the team. We have had good attendance every week with numbers around 15 to 20. 

## _Lego Club_ 

The Lego club started on Tuesdays in October and has proved to be popular. 

## _Weddings_ 

We had four weddings during the year. Tony Walker our previous vicar came back to officiate at his own son Tom’s wedding to Biddy in May. In December Tony returned to officiate at Mark & Jill Priddle’s daughter Sally’s wedding to Jack. 

## _Christmas_ 

The busiest time of 2022 was Christmas. This started on the first weekend of December with a Christingle service. We also hosted a Memorial Service for Hurtons Undertakers for the second year. We had school services for Carr Hill & St Swithun’s with Baby Jesus going on a rather unusual journey on a zip wire! The children loved it and so did the wardens and vicar! The next event was an informal Nativity service with all the characters from the story including several sheep. Carols by Candlelight was one of the highlights. The church was beautifully decorated and there were loads of candles. These stayed in place for the rest of the services and were well admired. A Christmas Eve Midnight communion was also well attended. We had an all age service on Christmas Day followed by a short communion service which was appreciated. In Conclusion, the year saw the return of normal seating arrangements and after service refreshments - what a blessing!

## **Deanery Synod** 

The Deanery Synod provides a forum for Anglican Churches across the Bassetlaw and Bawtry Deanery to share information and ideas. 

Over the past year we have had presentations from Ruth Lee and Duncan Dean, talking about children’s and young people’s ministry in the Diocese. 

Nigel Firth Diocesan Director of Education on how Churches can help Church school and places of Education. 

Robert Cleave Diocesan Environmental office on steps our churches can make to move towards being carbon neutral by 2030. Good progress has been made in filling clergy vacancies, especially in Retford, but many of the rural parishes remain unfilled.

## **Electoral Roll** 

At the Annual Meeting in May 2022 the electoral roll stood at 95. On 30th April 2023 the roll totalled 93 persons.

## **Fabric Report** 

Following on from last year’s report this year has all been about following on the works from where they left off. 

It was arranged that a roofer and the new architect inspect the roof and the architect concluded the roof needed to be renewed. He stated that this could be as much as £350,000. The PCC accepted that we should ask the architect to produce a specification. To enable the project to move forward.  We could then go out to tender and have a better guide on the cost. Unfortunately to achieve this we would have to pay 65% of the architect’s fee, which is 10% of the project cost. However, the rest of his fee is not due until we undertake the project. 

A small subcommittee has been formed to start the process of raising funds for the church roof repairs. It is planned to start meetings in the New Year. 

The roofer and the builder had looked at the Community Centre roof and said they could see nothing wrong with it. So, whilst the architect was on site, all three looked again. The architect concluded the panels had been so poorly fitted they lifted when the wind blew, lifting the tiles and letting in the rain. The only solution was to remove the panels, repair the roof and replace the panels. It was accepted by the PCC that the benefit gained from the panels didn’t justify the expense. A Contractor has offered to remove the panels and pay £1000 for them, this can then go towards the cost of repairs to the roof. We will liaise with the two contractors to ensure they work together. 

Our insurance company Ecclesiastical undertook a telephone survey of the church and community centre, as a result they are requiring us to undertake regular rigorous checks. To ensure these checks don’t impose an impossible burden on the Church Wardens a committee of volunteers is to be set up to share the tasks. The administrator has agreed to

keep the records. Volunteers are requested, please make yourself known to Martin Dawson or Mark Priddle. 

Finally 2023 is the year the Quinquennial Inspections of the Church and Community Centre is required to be undertaken approval for these will be sought from the PCC in the New Year.

St Saviour’s continues to support a number of different international and national mission and charitable organisations and individuals who work both locally and around the world. Including the following:

More information about each of the partners can be found in the Mission and Charity Partners booklet available at the back of church. 

This year the PCC made the decision to continue to give 10% to overseas mission and charity partners and 2% paid to national or local organisations. But that this giving be based on the current years planned giving rather than the previous years to take account of fluctuations in year by year income. This meant that mission and charity partner giving was paid in 2023 rather than at the end of 2022 as in previous years. 

Most partners provide regular updates on their activities and are very grateful for our support and partnership both financially and in prayer. The fluctuations of the pandemic has meant our communication of mission partner news and in person visits have been less regular. We need to work on returning to more regular and consistent communication and prayer in 2023. 

I am grateful to Una Dent who has acted as a mission and charity contact throughout most of 2022 helping to disseminate information and promote our partners. In 2023 Elizabeth Taylor has started to provide support to Una. If others would like to get more involved please do speak to me or Una Dent.

## **Music Group** 

The music group this year has again seen some huge changes whilst recovering from the restructuring that Covid forced on us in recent years. We have seen a significant reduction in numbers of musicians/singers including the resignation of Julie Ockenden as the music leader. Whilst we have endeavoured to keep the impetus of the music group alive, it has not always been as easy as it may seem, without one person making sacrifices every week to head up and lead the worship group. 

With illnesses and other hinderances that have seen regular musicians have to withdraw from their frequency of attendance, it has fallen largely on the responsibility of a single person to keep the continuity and welfare of the group alive. 

Monday evening rehearsals were introduced in the summer and were well accepted, but have been halted because of work commitments with the person leading those. We have considered an alternative day/time which is still in review. The rehearsals seemed to be well attended in general, but we really need to get some kind of regular commitment to make these worthwhile in the future. 

We seem to be living hand to mouth with the music group at the moment meaning that it is reviewed on a weekly basis, who will be responsible and leading  for the following week. Whilst this is not ideal, it seems to be our only option at the moment. 

We should meet and pray for other musicians to join our fellowship group earnestly, as worship is such a large part of the Sunday service. With all this considered, we have only once had to rely solely on the use of videos for the music in the last year. We pray for more musicians to come forward, and for more people to join our group who are able to lead worship from the front.

## **Safeguarding** 

Safeguarding must underpin everything we do as a church in order that those who come into our fellowship can be sure they are safe, secure and their welfare is paramount. There are requirements for church officers and group leaders and helpers to complete safeguarding training so if you are unsure what applies to you please check with me. A lot of the courses are done online which can be an issue for some but the safeguarding team at Southwell will try to find an alternative if this is a difficulty for you. 

If you have any queries or concerns about safeguarding or a safeguarding issue please talk to me or Ben for advice and help. If you would rather talk to someone outside this church, contact details for the diocese safeguarding team and outside organisations are on the Church and Community Centre noticeboards. 

Safeguarding is everyone’s business.

**Sunday Children’s Group** The Kid’s Club at St Saviour’s takes place each Sunday morning during the morning service. We begin in church, joining in with the initial prayers and a hymn, before moving across to the Community Centre. 

After welcoming everyone and introducing any newcomers we play an initial game which has some connection with the story – such as Follow the Leader, Guessing Games or Hunting for Things. A particular favourite has been “Will it float?” involving a bowl of water and a variety of objects! 

We then enjoy a song - usually involving actions and using a video from YouTube but we can sing well unaccompanied too! After this we settle down for the story – either acting it out, listening to it read or watching a video of it – and think about how it applies to our lives. Over the last 12 months we have learnt from the stories of Joseph - and how the Israelites ended up in Egypt - followed by stories of Moses – and how God provided a way of escape from Egypt that foreshadowed what He did through Jesus many years later. 

Since Christmas we have been looking at the ups and downs of the life of Peter and finding ways to be encouraged both by his enthusiasm and his mistakes! 

After a prayer, the final part of our time together involves a craft activity based on the theme and the all - important refreshments! 

Numbers attending vary widely but are usually between 3 and 8 and the age group is mainly around 3 to 10. We try to adapt activities if we have older children and provide puzzle sheets/colouring as an alternative to crafts. Occasionally we have under 3’s and it would be really helpful to have one or two extra volunteers who would be willing to come out and help with them when necessary. 

There are currently 5 of us in the team but if anyone would like to join us, either to help with the main group or the under 3’s please have a chat with me. The only requirement is a desire to help children to flourish in their relationship with Jesus (and the willingness to carry out some basic safeguarding training!) We meet once a term over coffee to discuss what will be happening and currently each helper comes about once a month. 

During the summer and autumn terms we also held monthly Kid’s Club PM events on Sunday afternoons. These were enjoyable events but attracted varying numbers so we decided to focus our energies on a weekly term time Tuesday Lego Club instead and are very grateful to those who have joined us to help to run these. 

Going forward we would like to occasionally share a story or a song with the congregation before we leave for our group, to help us all feel part of God’s family together.

## **Traidcraft** 

Where do we start with Fairtrade at St Saviour’s?  The church has been supporting a Fairtrade stall on the first Sunday of each month - for many years - since before 1997-98 when Kathy and Graeme took on sales of Traidcraft from a previous Fairtrader. Sales of Traidcraft items for 2022 was £2393.47, which includes support from loyal customers outside of St Saviours Church. Cost of stock purchased from Traidcraft in 2022 was £3146.86. Value of stock on hand at end of 2022 was £525.72 (sum from Statements and stock take).

St Saviour’s is considered a Fairtrade place of worship but what does that mean as it was quite a few years ago we received this status, 

1. Use Fairtrade products wherever possible (at least tea, coffee and sugar) and to share this information with the wider congregation. 

2. Integrate Fairtrade into the life of your place of worship, at Fairtrade Fortnight or other times of the year e.g. events, stalls and worship. 

3. Celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight and integrate Fairtrade into the life of your place of worship through other faith-based holidays, sermons and services. 

4. Engage with other Fairtrade campaigns and connect with community groups, such as schools and towns, where possible. 

There are lots of ways to support Fairtrade, but just two core requirements to be awarded Fairtrade Place of Worship status. 

1. Use Fairtrade products wherever possible (at least tea, coffee and sugar) and share this information with the wider congregation. 

2. Integrate Fairtrade into the life of your place of worship, at Fairtrade Fortnight or other times of the year e.g. events, stalls and worship. 

It’s really up to the minister, congregation and church community whether how we do at supporting Fairtrade. You can do lots more though and its helpful to be innovative about the promotion of Fairtrade! At St Saviour’s tea, coffee and sugar used at Sunday coffee mornings is usually Fairtrade though occasionally people donate tea or coffee which is not Fairtrade but we can’t criticise donations. We have not actively promoted Fairtrade in other ways for some time. 

Though this report is for 2022 in early 2023, Traidcraft plc went into Administration and it is not known as I write this whether it will be able to continue training. There are lots of other companies that trade and sell Fairtrade products so we can continue to support Fairtrade. But its likely Kathy and Graeme will consider not continuing the regular Fairtrade stall but are happy to support anyone who would like to continue providing a once a month Fairtrade stall as well as support wider promotion of Fairtrade

## **Treasurer’s Report** 

The year began hopefully enough. Changes were taking place. Andy Walker who had been a reliable, efficient and faithful treasurer for St. Saviours for many years moved away with his wife Christine. We found ourselves in need of a new treasurer. Paul Allison, who had been assistant treasurer volunteered to take on the responsibility. All went well until Paul's job became more demanding and time consuming than he had expected. He was reluctantly unable to continue as church treasurer. 

In September Ali Barnett and I had to step up to keep things going financially, not an easy task. I took on the day to day banking and accounting supported by Ali but as the year end loomed I didn't have the expertise to finalise the accounts. After a chance conversation with Andy Walker, he offered to step in and help us. What a blessing that was for us. Andy had almost completed the accounts for the financial year end when he developed issues with his health. Martin Bloomfield took over and completed them ready to submit to our auditors. 

Highs and lows followed to end a difficult year financially. The highs being:- A new volunteer to be St. Saviour's treasurer, Mike Newby has taken this job on. He will be

mentored by Martin Bloomfield and encouraged by myself :- Although we were unable to meet the full amount of the Parish share for 2022, we covered our ministry costs. This is quite an achievement given that our income has been depleted by church members moving away, and changing circumstances of those who remain. Our resources are limited and running costs increase :- The Diocese gave us the opportunity to apply for a grant to help with energy costs. Our application was successful and we received £1,500. 

The lows were put into proportion when we learned of Andy Walker's rapidly deteriorating health condition, resulting in the sad news of his death towards the end of March 2023. What an amazing man he was, always ready to help . He is missed very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with Christine and all the family in their grief and loss. We are extremely grateful to Andy for his faithful service to St. Saviours over many years.

## **Community Centre** 

Covid restrictions lifted on 24[th] February, while people were understandably still wary of being in large groups, activity has increased with very few cancellations due to Covid-19. In July, social media was set up specifically for the Community Centre. While the Centre was well known to people in the immediate area, and those with connections, few of the Retford population were aware that the Centre could be hired and of its benefits. 

The social media presence directly resulted in a new class joining us, a full day hire and parties from people who hadn’t previously used us. The page is monitored regularly, helping provide quick answers to queries and bringing the Centre up to date with communication. 

The booking and payments system has also been brought more up to date, going largely paperless unless a hard copy is required, and payments being made through online banking. This has saved both time and money, as well as making the booking process easier for the user. Our regular users have also responded well to these changes. 

We had two new groups join us in the second half of 2022. A Tai Chi class twice a week and Tiny Toes Ballet. Both seem well attended with good feedback regarding the facilities. Uniform groups, Trefoil Guild, Art, AA, Bingo, Calligraphy, Judo and Pies, Peas and Performances all continue to use the Centre along with private parties. 

Income from hires in 2022 has increased by £5,842. 

Some roofing and general building maintenance work was undertaken at the cost of £3326 and general running costs this year totalled £5,700.90. 

The Centre made a profit of £1,844.93.

## **ABC** 

ABC (Adults, Babies and Children) is our midweek ministry to the under 5s and their parents, grandparents and carers. Numbers vary from week to week but we often average around 15 children plus their adults. On Wednesday afternoons from 1.30-3pm, the children are able to play with a wide selection of toys, ranging from soft shakers, puzzles and books

to dolls, fire engines and the play kitchen. There is also a craft for the children to make each week. 

Half way through the afternoon we take a break for a snack, some nursery rhymes and a short story from the Bible. The children are never too young to hear important truths about Jesus! 

The parents, grandparents and childminders we have regular contact with often tell us how much they value ABC, especially as many of the children who attend were born during lockdown and missed out on so many social experiences. We have seen several families attend other church events such as Lego Club and the Nativity and Christingle services after a first contact with church at ABC and we long to see more of this cross over, along with these families also coming to our Sunday services. 

The loss of Ben and Sarah Marston in October was keenly felt, especially as they had been so key in getting ABC back up and running after covid. The group is now led by Jackie and Ali, ably and gratefully assisted by Andrew, Maureen and David along with Bobby and Sue, two long standing friends of ABC. We would love to hear from anyone else who would enjoy manoeuvring toys, serving refreshments or befriending the families.

## **Girls Night Out** 

We returned last year after covid with 3 events – Movie Night, 40’s Tea Party and Carols by Candlelight. About 60 women, friends and family attended each from church and the community, with everyone having a great time. This year we have had a St Patrick’s Day Celebration and look forward to a Roaring Twenties evening in July and Carols by Candlelight in December. 

It has been more challenging recently as two of our team have stepped back but it is a privilege to work with the remaining team and I’m constantly delighted and amazed by the way we work together to get things done! Also a special mention to our team of washersup, without whom we could not get carry on. 

We continue with our aim to provide a safe, caring and welcoming space for women to come and enjoy themselves and enjoy each other’s company, meet new friends and receive God’s love through sharing in his hospitality.

## **Time Together – Wednesdays PM & Prayer Meetings** 

Our midweek evening time together group continues to meet most weeks to spend time with each other and with God. Over the course of the year attendance has fluctuated and we have explored a range of passages and topics from the Bible including prayer, discussion based on our Sunday sermon series, and joining in with Lent courses, which have often been well attended. The group has been hosted in various church members homes and always provides a warm welcome to new members why not give it a try.

During 2022 a monthly prayer meeting was held, but due to inconsistent numbers it was decided in early 2023 to try a new approach by holding shorter but more regular weekly midday prayer meetings on Fridays at Midday up until Easter. Whilst numbers were small these meetings did see people come who had not previously attended an evening prayer meeting. We will continue to review how best we can bring the needs of our church and world to God in prayer in 2023.

## **Time Together – Thursday AM** 

We have continued to meet fortnightly during the last year enjoying friendship and learning together. We have covered a range of topics including “Questions God asks of us”, “Prayer” and most recently “Loving your Church” the Lent course. Our discussions are open and informal, and our aim is that everyone who comes should feel comfortable to speak, question and enjoy being together. 

Sharing our faith, our experiences of God and supporting one another are fundamental to our fellowship together so feel free to join us!

## **Grief Café** 

The café has continued to meet monthly over the last year with a steady number of people coming. Some come once or a few times and others come regularly – we are available for whatever people may need. 

Our Wellbeing Workshop in February was well received (thanks to Derek at Hurtons for their provision of refreshments) so we are planning another in May on Sleep. We appreciate the positive support from many in our church family and ask for continued prayers for God’s strength and guidance in the future.

## **Pies, Peas and Performances** 

Post Covid, Pies, Peas And Performances has continued to thrive and develop with a varied series of high profile acts. 

From Bafta winner Henry Normal, to top comedian Justin Moorhouse, as well as national and international music recording artists – Terrorvision’s Tony Wright, American Ryan Hamilton, regular favourites like Henry Priestman and Les Glover, Brooks Williams and Boo Hewerdine, Ian McNabb, Ian Prowse and author Suzan Holder – who even brought husband Noddy along (he ended up doing the raffle for us!) 

We are also very proud that we can support our own musical and artistic community with our Christmas concert that featured James Fox, Mark Cantrill, Sally Cookson, Graham Bottley, as well as local artists like poet Liz Carney Marsh.

We have a dedicated team who give freely of their time as a commitment to this venture – Mark Barnett, Nick Partridge, Carl Wood, Paul Allison, Steve Thorpe, Graham and Arthur Bottley and Richard McFarlane. Their efforts cannot be underestimated. 

Audiences continue to grow and we have a regular clientele who love the atmosphere created in our church building where we eat and chat together before the entertainment. This positive attitude to our church is something we foster and something that is central to the ethos of Pies and Peas and is something every body comments on – whether punter or visiting artist. We are “church” without being “church”. 

To begin with our clientele was mostly made up of our church community who supported us. While this is still the case, we now have a growing number who attend who are from the wider community. In fact, several artists have brought audiences from all over the country. 

Our reputation as a great venue for artists is growing and we regularly receive requests from touring artists asking to play. 

Our regular raffle continues to support Bassetlaw Food Bank. As do regular food donations brought along by punters. In fact we have recently sponsored a fruit tree. 

Financially, Pies, Peas and Performances is more than solvent and completely self-funding. 

We continue our relationship with local businesses – Westlands Farm Shop, More Than Flowers and Wonderland Bookshop – as well as fostering links with Bassetlaw Literature Festival. 

Pies, Peas and Performances is a success story that continues to grow. We have events planned throughout 2023 and 2024. A very exciting time ahead.

## **Churches Together in Retford (CTIR)** 

The CTIR committee meets four times a year and is made up of clergy and lay people from churches across Retford. It provides an opportunity for churches to share information and coordinate ministry. This year CTIR gathered to mark the death of our late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a special service at St Swithun’s Church. We also enjoyed another Churches Together Christmas carol service held in the market square. 

2022 also saw the return of regular monthly ministers meetings. Where church leaders across Retford gather for mutual support and encouragement. Thanks to Ben Marston and Mark Barnett who have represented St Saviour’s in 2022.

## **Christian Aid** 

The pandemic made it very hard for Christian Aid to carryout it’s normal activities in 2022. Though 2022 saw plans put in place for the restarting of Lent Lunches, which were successfully held at St Saviour’s during Lent 2023. I’m grateful to Paul Allison and Martin and Judith Dawson who have attended meetings. St Saviour’s currently has no official Christian Aid rep, so if anyone would like to volunteer to help with his please do speak to Ben or Martin.

## **School’s Work** 

Our schools work continues to develop amongst the four primary schools in our parish (St Swithun’s Church of England Primary Academy, Carr Hill, Bracken Lane and Thrumpton Lane). Myself and our outgoing Curate Ben Marston have been involved in taking assemblies, Collective Worship (weekly at St Swithun’s), lessons, speaking at RE club, facilitating church visits and end of term services. Our links are strongest with Carr Hill and St Swithun’s whose school choirs both attended Sunday services during 2022. It’s also great that a number of church members serve as governors of our local schools (Mark Barnett, Jackie Clayton, Jill Priddle). Our links provide a great opportunity to sensitively share Jesus with staff and children. Let’s pray they continue to develop and grow in 2023 and beyond.

## **Midweek Service** 

2022 was a year of recovery for our midweek service with numbers more consistently reaching pre-pandemic levels. The service is attended by a number from St Saviour’s and some from other churches in the Deanery who all appreciate the quiet service, the traditional language of the BCP and refreshments afterwards. My thanks to Barbara Newbold and Jean Mercer who help to coordinate the refreshments.

## **Lego Club** 

This new initiative was started in the autumn of 2022 as a stepping stone between our existing schools ministry and all age services. The Club was well attended in the autumn term with around 15 children on average attending most weeks plus their parents and carers. We have seen families attend who previously attended our Sunday afternoon services and events, ABC, have heard about us through school, publicity or who have been invited by church members. Some families involved in Lego Club have now attended other church events and services including our recent Easter Trail. Numbers have fluctuated more in 2023, so we have reformatted the club as a Lego Picnic to meet monthly in the summer term of this year.

## **5th Retford Rainbows Brownies & Guides** 

All three sections started the new term by attending events to celebrate returning to guiding after the covid pandemic. The Rainbows enjoyed an afternoon of circus themed activities at the Elms, 

Trying out circus skills, playing games and crafts. They also had a lovely day out at Sundown Adventure land The Brownies had a day at Roughbreak campsite where the theme was a woodland adventure, crafts, games and making smores on an open fire. In the afternoon the girls built fairy dens. The guides had an action packed morning at Sherwood pines GO Ape. In November the girls enjoyed a very cold day at Glenbrook activity centre enjoying the outdoors with a theme of Sparkle and Ice. 

The girls have enjoyed a wide and varied programme over the year continuing to work on the Girlguiding programme and gaining various badges. They have also had themed evenings – Harvest, Bonfire night, Burns night and Chinese New Year. The three units joined together to celebrate Thinking day with the theme Our world- Peaceful future. 

The girls have taken part in division and district events including the St George’s day parade and service in Retford and the carol service held at St Saviour’s church.
