## **Achievements and performance of the charity**

## **Review of charitable activities undertaken by the charity**

The Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust CIO monitors and supports, in accordance with a collaboration agreement between it and Catch22 Charity Limited, the progress and operations of a children’s residential care home project. That project is housed within Catch22’s corporate structure and by agreement uses the Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust name.

The CIO earnt £9,914 in income from grants and donations in the reporting year. The CIO used these funds to cover the administrative costs of the CIO.

## **Summary of main achievements of the charity during the year**

The main area of support provided by LPT CIO is to the Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust project as part of Catch22, which runs a children’s home in Sutton, Southwest London. The children’s home opened with the support of funds raised by LPT CIO in the previous reporting year. This marked a significant milestone in the mission of LPT CIO to be able to change the lives of children in care, in terms of the children who directly benefit from the home, but also the indirect benefit to organisations who are using the learnings from this home to inform future children’s home projects (including for the Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust project itself).

The Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust project publishes an annual report of its activities and progress. Highlights from this reporting year include:

- In September and October 2022, more children moved into the home, bringing the total to 4. As of the time of writing (June 2024), all 4 children are still living in the home (as well as a fifth child) – a notable achievement considering national averages in duration of children’s residential care placements are between 4 and 7 months.

- The home recruited more social pedagogy practitioners to support the increase in children living in the home, and established its own bank team to enable greater flexibility in staffing.

- The team ran an online learning series, sharing lessons learned so far in the process of opening a children’s home with a diverse audience – feedback from

6

Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust (CIO) Trustees’ Report and Annual Accounts For The Year Ended 31 August 2023

attendees was overwhelmingly positive, and Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust intend to run more such events in future.

- The team started working in collaboration with Kingston University on developing a first-of-its-kind Level 6 qualification for residential care staff.

- The home won the Regional Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for Southwest London, among other awards this year – this is testament to the thoughtful design, which will be continued in future Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust homes.

Feedback from key beneficiaries of Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust’s work includes:

- “I like the way people treat me here. When things go wrong or I do something I know I shouldn’t, the adults help me. I’m not punished. They help me to learn.” Child living at Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust’s home.

- “I only have good things to say about Treehouse, they are amazing. All the staff are so caring and my sons like living there. I have a good relationship with them all and its great working together in the best interests of the boys.” Mum of child living at Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust’s home.

- “Child A tells me that they are very happy at the home… Child A says the keyworker has their back and genuinely cares about them.” Regulation 44 inspection report.

Looking ahead, LPT CIO and the Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust project have begun developing our framework for impact evaluation, which will allow us to learn from the elements of our work and practice that are most effective, and to give our voice greater credibility in the wider sector in terms of how the Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust model can and should be implemented more broadly.

Furthermore, LPT CIO is supporting the Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust project to open two more children’s homes over the next three years, which will be in London and the Southeast, areas of great need in the country. This will be alongside the development of a degree-level qualification for practitioners working in children’s homes, to ensure training for teams working in these homes is delivered to the highest standards possible.

## **Fundraising**

LPT CIO is able to support the work of the Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust project by providing a platform through which we can fundraise to support the project’s activities.

LPT CIO organised a group to participate in the 55-mile bike ride from London to Brighton to raise money to support the children's home. The bike ride took place in September 2023, and raised over £10,000 in donations.

As the Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust project prepares to open a second children’s home in order to support more children, LPT CIO is encouraged by the continuing positive response to our fundraising that helps make such growth possible. Our sincere thanks to all those who supported our fundraising activity throughout the year.

## **Monitoring and advisory**

The CIO provided regular monitoring and advisory support for the development and opening of the first children’s home, and continues to provide operational and strategic support.

## **Structure, governance and management**

## **Nature of the governing document and constitution of the charity**

The Charity is incorporated and governed by its own Foundation constitution. The trustees have overall control and responsibility for policy and major decision making.

## **The methods adopted for the recruitment and appointment of new trustees**

Other than the trustees and those persons connected with them there are no individuals who are related parties.

No third party has a right to appoint a trustee.

## **Financial review**

## **Policies on reserves**

The trustees have resolved to establish reserves to provide for future activities, and to provide funding for the expected expenditure for six months ahead in the sum of £17,520.

## **Statement of trustees' responsibilities**

The Charities Act and the Companies Act require the Board of Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity as at the end of the financial year and of the surplus or deficit of the charity. In preparing those financial statements the Board is required to:-

- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; and

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.

- state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed , subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;

The trustees are also responsible for maintaining adequate accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and which are sufficient to show and explain the charity's transactions and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006 and comply with regulations made under the Charities Act. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The trustees are also responsible for the contents of the trustees’ report; the responsibility of the independent examiner in relation to the trustees’ report is limited to examining the report and ensuring that, on the face of the report, there are no inconsistencies with the figures disclosed in the financial statements.
