## **SUTTON BONINGTON BAPTIST CHURCH CIO** ## **TRUSTEES’ REPORT 2023** The Trustees of Sutton Bonington Baptist Church present their annual report for January 2023 to December 2023 in the third period as a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). Our Trustees are formed from the Pastor, Elders, Secretary and Treasurer of our church. They have been appointed by the church members and apart from David Sutcliffe, who retired from the eldership and as Trustee in January, have all served throughout this period. ## **Aim and Purposes** Our aim is to be a growing community shaped by God’s word and empowered by the Spirit to love God, each other, and our neighbour; and to go and make disciples who live faithfully for Christ in Sutton Bonington, the surrounding area, our schools and workplaces, and overseas. ## **Objectives and Activities** The Trustees are committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our church and become part of our church family. Our services and worship put faith into practice through prayer, scriptures, music, and outreach. In planning the activities of the church, the trustees have considered the Charities Commissions guidance on public benefit, and particularly the specific guidance for charities in the advancement of religion. We strive to enable ordinary people to live out their faith as part of the church family through: - Worship and prayer, learning about the Gospel and developing their knowledge and trust in Jesus. - Provision of pastoral care for all age groups living in the village, the University and surrounding area. - Missionary and outreach work both at home and overseas. To facilitate this work, it is important to maintain the fabric of our Baptist church and ensure its use for future generations. ## **Achievements and Performance** ## **Services and Worship** 2023 proved to be an eventful year both in our church life and on a worldwide scale. A year where we have both felt God’s blessings and needed His support. A year where the conflict in Ukraine shows no sign of resolution, Israel and Palestine are in bloody conflict, and we are seeing more and more worrying changes in our climate and weather causing widespread flooding in our community. Our weekly congregation continues to average between 80-100 each Sunday along with a zoom link for those unable to attend. Our congregation covers all age-groups including several young families, students from the nearby campus, and mature worshipers. Our church membership now stands at 57 with 4 leaving membership and 5 joining for the first time. Our members’ meetings and fortnightly prayer meetings are also well attended. A Discovering Membership course was held in April, followed by a six week Daytime Alpha course starting in May. In September we started a Growing Leaders course with 18 participants who with one exception were emerging leaders in their 20’s and 30’s. The purpose was growth in relationships with God, having a secure identity in Christ and not relying on our “leadership” to give us identity. Growing through more consistent application of spiritual disciplines. Growing in leadership roles (work, church) having greater clarity about Page **1** of **5** their call. Understanding the distinctives of Christian Leadership, and helping them grow in current church leadership roles and discern their call to new roles where God wills. In January David Sutcliffe completed his final five-year term as an elder having served in that role for 30 years over two different periods. A service of celebration and tea was held in June. In February a Church Weekend away was held for the first time since the Covid Pandemic at Whitemoor Lakes. Over 60 people stayed for the weekend with over twenty joining them as day guests. This year we have been delighted to share services with the other churches in the village, including Christian Aid, Palm Sunday, and a joint morning service on the showground at the Sutton Bonington Show. We continued to have strong links with the Sutton Bonington Campus of the University of Nottingham. Both UK and international students and staff (often with families) attend our worship services and other groups and contribute significantly to church life. A Student Life group meets regularly on Sunday evenings. We support our members pastorally with a well-attended house group structure along with an international group for overseas students, and a group specifically for older teenagers. There is a well-attended midweek Coffee Break activity for our older members. Several special weeks of prayer were held throughout the year. ## **Children and Youth** Our congregation continues to attract several young families and our Sunday school and Creche continues to grow in numbers. Several parents from our midweek fortnightly music group called Little Seeds which caters for babies and toddlers have contributed to this number. We had a special Mothering Sunday service to encourage families from Little Seeds to get involved. Several children and young people attended Christian camps in July/August, one of which was led by two of our church members. We continue to run a mid-week Rock Solid group for 11–14-year-olds although the intake for September was fewer than previous years due to our inability to get into the local schools prior to the summer break. These are mainly children who are not part of our Sunday congregation. One of the girls was from a Ukrainian Refugee family staying in the village. SB Youth is a homegroup that meets on a Sunday afternoon and caters for Sixth formers and those who have are now working locally having left school very recently. John Hebblethwaite continues to have connections with both Sutton Bonington and Normanton-on-Soar Primary Schools and leads fortnightly assemblies. ## **Community Activities** The church continues to have strong links with the community and the other local churches, as well as the Nottingham University Sutton Bonington Campus. Various community groups have used our building in this period including our local playgroup “SB Babies and Toddlers”. Page **2** of **5** Students, international students, and post-graduates have a special welcome and place in our church family with many staying local after graduation and becoming long term church members. Val Owens is our Friends International Student Worker on campus. As well as our weekly international student bible study group we jointly run a Globe Café with students on campus. We have strong links with the Christian Union and run a Student Life group on Sunday evenings. Our students are encouraged to take an active role in church life and student lunches are provided after Sunday services. We also support student run events on campus. In October we held a student welcome event feeding approximately 100 people comprising of both students and SBBC members. A team from the church worked throughout 2023 to teach English to Ukrainian children at Sutton Bonington Primary School to help with their integration into school and community life. Karen Gray was employed by SBBC CIO as project leader for 8 hours a week and recruited and trained a team of local volunteers and sourced materials. Informal friendships developed with several Ukrainian families, and they were encouraged to participate in community and church events. SBBC have supported Kegworth Baptist church welcoming asylum seekers at the Yew Lodge Hotel in Kegworth. A regular Monday evening group was set up providing sport and game activities for the refugees and several members of the congregation have supported drop-in events held by Kegworth Baptist. Over the Christmas period we had a special Carols and Craft evening aimed at welcoming young families and organised an open-to-all ‘Sing Christmas SB Style’ event at one of the village’s Public Houses. People that had recently moved into the new estate (Lime Gardens) were invited to this latter event and those who came were able to make link with others in the community. ## **Partnerships** We have strong links with other churches through the Soar Valley Gospel Partnership (SVGP). We occasionally have joint services and provide preaching support. Our own church (SBBC) continues to support the local Trussell Trust Foodbank run by New Life Community Church (formerly Gorse Covet Free Church). ## **Mission** The Church is involved in supporting worldwide Christian Mission. In 2023 we continued to support our mission partners financially, prayerfully and pastorally. Mat Linley served as the regional administrative officer for AIM’s (African Inland Mission) Southern Region, working as part of a small team supporting AIM missionaries and partners in Namibia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Madagascar, and other Indian Ocean islands. Katy Linley worked as a Family Medicine Consultant at AIC Kijabe Hospital. Kijabe Hospital is known as a key training centre for medical professionals, not just across Kenya, but throughout Africa. In addition to her clinical work, Katy is heading up a new Diploma in Family Health for Clinical Officers (COs), which aims to equip Christian COs to provide quality primary health care and to give them a vision to use these skills to serve and minister in cross-cultural settings. Val Owens continued to be supported as a church mission partner employed by Friends International as a staff worker on the Sutton Bonington Campus of the University of Nottingham. Val supports Christian International Students and their families as well as reaching out to those of other faiths and none. Page **3** of **5** Our 2023 Christmas Project supported victims of the earthquake in Morocco through the Morocco Relief Fund set up by AWM/Pioneers. Former members of our church were able to visit the region to understand the needs and make sure funds would be well used to support Livelihood projects in the Atlas Mountains. £1682 was raised. Our church magazine Springs is distributed bi-annually to every household in the village and keeps the village community informed of church activities. ## **Buildings** We continue to raise funds for a new church building on the site of the present Baptist Church. After costs through the sacrificial giving of church members a sum in excess of £220,000 has been raised for this purpose along with further pledges of over £340,000 over the next few years. In June we held a special church meeting approving plans presented by Mayway Construction and agreed to proceed to the next stage of planning. Planning Permission was submitted on behalf of the church on 10[th] August 2023. The requirement of a Bat Survey prior to Planning Permission being granted has caused a delay and will be carried out in 2024. The requirement to recruit a team for making grant applications has been recognised. The Trustees for our building are the East Midlands Baptist Association. ## **Financial Review** The financial position of the charity is set out in the Statement of Financial Activities and Balance Sheet and the related notes and have been prepared in accordance with the statutory requirements of the charities Act 2011 and the SORP (FRS 102). ## **Structure, Governance and Management** ## **Governing Document** Sutton Bonington Baptist Church CIO is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and constitutes a corporate body with limited liability. It is registered with the Charity Commission under number 1190547. The Church was incorporated on 24[th] July 2020 and is controlled by its governing document, a constitution and is governed by its trustees in accordance with its constitution. ## **Recruitment and appointment of Trustees** The day to day running of the church is under the control of a Team comprising of the Pastor, an Elder and a team of Deacons which include the church secretary and treasurer. The Pastor, elder, Secretary, and Treasurer make up the elected Trustees. Our Pastor, John Hebblethwaite was appointed by the church at a special church meeting in 2021 for period of five years (until Sept 2026). The Pastor is employed under a Letter of Appointment. The Trustees are appointed in accordance with the Church’s Constitution. ## **Organisational Structure** The Church appoints a Pastor and other paid staff as circumstances require. The Pastor leads the Church community in both spiritual and practical ways and chairs the Church meetings. The Church membership elect the Elders, Deacons, and Officers from among themselves to oversee the spiritual and operational aspects of the Church.
