SUTTON BONINGTON BAPTIST CHURCH CIO
TRUSTEES’ REPORT 2022
The Trustees of Sutton Bonington Baptist Church present their annual report for January 2022 to December 2022 in the second period as a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). Our Trustees are formed from the Pastor, Elders, Secretary and Treasurer of our church. They have been appointed by the church members and have all served throughout this period.
Aim and Purposes
Our aim is to be a growing community shaped by God’s word and empowered by the Spirit to love God, each other, and our neighbour; and to go and make disciples who live faithfully for Christ in Sutton Bonington, the surrounding area, our schools and workplaces, and overseas.
Objectives and Activities
The Trustees are committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our church and become part of our church family. Our services and worship put faith into practice through prayer, scriptures, music, and outreach. In planning the activities of the church, the trustees have considered the Charities Commissions guidance on public benefit and in particular, the specific guidance for charities in the advancement of religion.
We strive to enable ordinary people to live out their faith as part of the church family through:
-
Worship and prayer, learning about the Gospel and developing their knowledge and trust in Jesus.
-
Provision of pastoral care for all age groups living in the village, the University and surrounding area.
-
Missionary and outreach work both at home and overseas.
To facilitate this work, it is important to maintain the fabric of our Baptist church and ensure its use for future generations.
Achievements and Performance
Services and Worship
2022 started with the final restrictions of the Omicron wave of the Covid virus being gradually lifted and the Russian-Ukraine conflict being central to our thoughts and prayers from March.
Our weekly congregation averages between 80-100 each Sunday along with a zoom link for those unable to attend. Our congregation continues to grow in all age-groups with several young families, new students, and mature worshipers. Our church membership now stands at 56. In September Elliot Carey volunteered to give one day of his time to act as our church administrator. He began to develop a new website and to implement the use of a new communication tool called ChurchSuite. The latter helps us comply with our GDPR policy. This year we have been delighted to share services with the other churches in the village, including Christian Aid, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and a joint morning service on the showground at the Sutton Bonington Show. In June we held a Church Day out at Normanton Village Hall and a Growing in Prayer Weekend in October.
We continued to have strong links with the Sutton Bonington Campus of the University of Nottingham. Both UK and international students and staff (often with families) attend our worship services and other groups and contribute greatly to our vibrant church community.
We support our members pastorally with a well-attended house group structure along with an International group for overseas students. There is a midweek Coffee Break activity for our older members.
Fortnightly prayer meetings along with special weeks of prayer were held throughout the year.
Children and Youth
Helen Ison’s 27-month term of employment as Family Worker was completed at the end of 2021 but she continues to be our families leader. She still leads the midweek baby and toddler music group, Little Seeds.
During our Sunday morning services we have a creche and ‘Roots and Shoots’ Sunday school. Our younger teenagers also have a Sunday morning group called Revelation.
SBBC runs a vibrant Rock-Solid group for 11–14-year-olds during the week. In November they held a Trolley Dash in support of the Trussell Trust Foodbank.
A new homegroup (SB Youth) was started for sixth formers and was hosted by various church families to help develop cross generational fellowship.
John Hebblethwaite and Helen Ison have connections with both Sutton Bonington and Normanton-on-Soar Primary Schools and lead fortnightly assemblies.
Community Activities
The church has strong links with the community as well as the Nottingham University Campus.
Various community groups have used our building in this period including our local playgroup “SB Babies and Toddler” and the Horticultural Society.
Students, overseas students, and post-graduates have a special welcome and place in our church family with many staying local after graduation and becoming long term church members. Val Owens is our Friends International Student Worker on campus. As well as our weekly international student bible study group we jointly run a Globe Café with students on campus. We have strong links with the Christian Union and run a Student Life group on Sunday evenings. Our students are encouraged to take an active role in church life and student lunches are provided after Sunday services. We also support student run events on campus.
The Word Project was set up to teach English to Ukrainian children at Sutton Bonington Primary School to help with their integration into school and community life. Karen Gray was employed by SBBC CIO as project leader for 8 hours a week. She recruited and trained a team of local volunteers and sourced materials.
In November in conjunction with other SB Churches we helped host ‘The Christmas Story’ - a multi-sensory journey for adults and children. 10 groups of school children from the local primary schools attended.
Partnerships
We have strong links with other churches through the Soar Valley Gospel Partnership (SVGP). Our Pastor and his wife continued to act as Trustees of a church plant (Castle Donington community church) with Roy Monks serving as it’s Pastor. The church was formerly closed in July so that it could merge with Castle Donington Baptist church and together they are known as Castle Donington Community Church and led by Roy Monks. The church plant had welcomed and baptised a considerable number of people and had formed it’s own membership. Becoming part of an existing church allowed for some experienced leadership to help Roy Monks take the church forward. A strategic partnership that means the church is now able to continue without financial support from the SVGP.
Our own church (SBBC) continues to support the local Trussell Trust Foodbank run by New Life Community Church (formerly Gorse Covet Free Church).
Mission
The Church is involved in supporting worldwide Christian Mission. We offer financial and personal support to our mission partners. Mat Linley serves as the regional administrative officer for AIM’s (African Inland Mission) Southern Region, working as part of a small team supporting AIM missionaries and partners in Namibia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Madagascar, and other Indian Ocean islands. Katy Linley works as a Family Medicine Consultant at AIC Kijabe Hospital. Kijabe Hospital is known as a key training centre for medical professionals, not just across Kenya, but throughout Africa. In addition to her clinical work, Katy is heading up a new Diploma in Family Health for Clinical Officers (COs), which aims to equip Christian COs to provide quality primary health care and to give them a vision to use these skills to serve and minister in cross-cultural settings.
Val Owens continues to be supported as a church mission partner employed by Friends International as a staff worker on the Sutton Bonington Campus of the University of Nottingham. Val supports Christian International Students and their families as well as reaching out to those of other faiths and none.
We also celebrated the retirement of Jonathan and Elaine Burt whose work in Niger included Agriculture, literacy, training Christian workers and starting new churches. Jonathan had been a student in our church, and we supported them for over 40years.
Our 2022 Harvest Project supported AIM’s Famine Relief in Southern Madagascar - declared as the world’s first Climate Change induced famine.
Our 2022 Christmas Project supported the Tearfund overseas Christmas Project.
Our church magazine Springs is distributed bi-annually to every household in the village and keeps the village community informed of church activities.
Buildings
Since the early 2010’s we have been raising funds for a renewed building on the site of the present Baptist Church. To date through the sacrificial giving of church members a sum in excess of £230,000 has been raised for this purpose. The trustees engaged Mayway Construction in 2021, a local contractor with experience in construction projects for church and similar buildings and we hope to be about to submit formal planning permission in 2023.
The Trustees for our building are the East Midlands Baptist Association.
Financial Review
The financial position of the charity is set out in the Statement of Financial Activities and Balance Sheet and the related notes and have been prepared in accordance with the statutory requirements of the charities Act 2011 and the SORP (FRS 102).
