## **TRUSTEES’ REPORT** 

The Trustees of Sutton Bonington Baptist Church present their annual report for July 2020 to December 2021 in the first period as a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). Our Trustees are formed from the Pastor, Elders, Secretary and Treasurer of our church. They have been appointed by the church members and have all served throughout this period. 

## **Aim and Purposes** 

Our aim is to be a growing community shaped by God’s word and empowered by the Spirit to love God, each other, and our neighbour; and to go and make disciples who live faithfully for Christ in Sutton Bonington, the surrounding area, our schools and workplaces, and overseas. 

## **Objectives and Activities** 

The Trustees are committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our church and become part of our church family. Our services and worship put faith into practice through prayer, scriptures, music, and outreach. In planning the activities of the church, the trustees have considered the Charities Commissions guidance on public benefit and in particular, the specific guidance for charities in the advancement of religion. 

We strive to enable ordinary people to live out their faith as part of the church family through: 

- Worship and prayer, learning about the Gospel and developing their knowledge and trust in Jesus. 

- Provision of pastoral care for all age groups living in the village, the University and surrounding area. 

- Missionary and outreach work both at home and overseas. 

To facilitate this work, it is important to maintain the fabric of our Baptist church and ensure it’s use for future generations. 

## **Achievements and Performance** 

## **Services and Worship** 

Our first year as a CIO ending 31[st] December 2021 has been dominated by the impact of the COVID19 virus. We have negotiated three periods of national lockdown and have continued to serve our local community using on-line services and groups. With an average of 50-60 logins (many of which were couples or larger households) each Sunday we were able to reach out further afield and many new faces joined us. This continued until July when we resumed face-to-face services, with Sunday morning Children’s work resuming in September. During lockdown we combined and supported the other village churches with successful joint YouTube services on Remembrance Day and Christmas. 

We continued to have strong links with the Sutton Bonington Campus of the University of Nottingham. Both UK and international students and staff (often

with families) attend our worship services and other groups and contribute greatly to our vibrant church community. 

We support our members pastorally with a well-attended house group structure along with an International group for overseas students. There is a midweek Coffee Break activity for our older members. 

We were able to continue our house group meetings online and in Lent 2021 we held an Alpha Course with some house groups inviting guests and other new groups forming for the duration of Alpha and the follow up groups who completed “The Bible Course”. 

Fortnightly prayer meetings along with special weeks of prayer were held online for during the period of the pandemic and face to face thereafter. 

## **Children and Youth** 

In Helen Ison we have employed a fixed-term Families Worker for work with young families and children. Her 27-month term of employment was completed at the end of 2021. Helen ran a midweek baby and toddler music group, Little Seeds. This was run both online and face to face when regulations allowed the support group to resume and was crucial for the wellbeing of families during lockdown. Family Services also happened online during the pandemic and face to face in thereafter. 

In September 2021 we resumed Sunday morning groups for children and teenagers, alongside a creche during the services. 

During lockdown most youth work was suspended although our Sunday evening group, Revelation, continued on-line. 

SBBC run a vibrant Rock Solid group for 11–14-year-olds during the week 

John Hebblethwaite and Helen Ison have connections with both Sutton Bonington and Normanton-on-Soar Primary Schools and lead fortnightly assemblies. 

## **Community Activities** 

The church has strong links with the community as well as the Nottingham University Campus. 

Various community groups have used our building in this period including “Your Community Shop” for their AGM and sale of stock during the garden walkabout. Also, Greening Sutton Bonington. Regular users were “SB Babies and Toddler” group, United Choir, and the Horticultural Society. 

Students, overseas students, and post-graduates have a special welcome and place in our church family with many staying local after graduation and becoming long term church members. Val Owens is our Friends International Student Worker on campus. As well as our weekly international student bible study group we jointly run a Globe Café with students on campus. We have strong links with the Christian Union and run a Student Life group on Sunday evenings. Our students are encouraged to take an active role in church life and student lunches are provided after Sunday services. We also support student run events on campus.

Prior to the COVID19 pandemic the church ran The Crossing Point, an intergenerational cafe on Wednesday afternoons. 

## **Partnerships** 

We have strong links with other churches through the Soar Valley Gospel Partnership. We give financial and spiritual support to a new church plant in Castle Donington, of which our Pastor and his wife are Trustees. 

Since the closure of Joseph’s Storehouse, the church has been supporting the most local Trussell Trust Foodbank run by New Life Community Church (formerly Gorse Covet Free Church). 

## **Mission** 

The Church is involved in supporting worldwide Christian Mission. We offer financial and personal support to our mission partners. The Linleys have now left Madagascar and started a new challenge in Kenya. Mat Linley serves as the regional administrative officer for AIM’s (African Inland Mission) Southern Region, working as part of a small team supporting AIM missionaries and partners in Namibia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Madagascar and other Indian Ocean islands. Katy Linley works as a Family Medicine Consultant at AIC Kijabe Hospital. Kijabe Hospital is known as a key training centre for medical professionals, not just across Kenya, but throughout Africa. In addition to her clinical work, Katy is heading up a new Diploma in Family Health for Clinical Officers (COs), which aims to equip Christian COs to provide quality primary health care and to give them a vision to use these skills to serve and minister in cross-cultural settings. It is hoped that this first cohort of seven students will become the teaching faculty for this diploma in the future. 

Howard and Janet Jones continued to serve in the UK promoting economic opportunities for marginalised groups in North Africa. This includes working with those who have disabilities, young people in rural areas, women without family support and women released from prison. They retired from this role in 2021 and began to prepare to serve in a Pastoral Care supporting others working in North Africa. 

We had supported Jonathan and Elaine Burt financially in their work with Sudan Interior Mission in Niger - until their retirement in 2021. We most recently helped a project to finance the purchase and distribution of the “Africa Bible Commentary” which is a biblical and theological resource to equip Christian leaders in Africa. 

Val Owens continues to be supported as a church mission partner employed by Friends International as a staff worker on the Sutton Bonington Campus of the University of Nottingham. Val supports Christian International Students and their families as well as reaching out to those of other faiths and none. 

Our Christmas Projects supported the Exaireo Trust in 2020 (they provide housing, mentoring and support for those who have been vulnerable to homelessness including those who have experienced alcohol and drug addictions). In 2021 we supported Africa Inland Missions Southern Madagascar Famine Fund in 2021.

Our church magazine Springs is distributed bi-annually to every household in the village and keeps the village community informed of church activities. 

## **Buildings** 

Since the early 2010’s we have been raising funds for a renewed building on the site of the present Baptist Church To date through the sacrificial giving of church members a sum in excess of £220,000 has been raised for this purpose. The trustees have engaged Mayway Construction, a local contractor with experience in construction projects for church and similar buildings to explore our options. 

The Trustees for our building are the East Midlands Baptist Association. 

## **Financial Review** 

The financial position of the charity is set out in the Statement of Financial Activities and Balance Sheet and the related notes and have been prepared in accordance with the statutory requirements of the charities Act 2011 and the SORP (FRS 102). 

## **Structure, Governance and Management** 

## **Governing Document** 

Sutton Bonington Baptist Church CIO is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and constitutes a corporate body with limited liability. It is registered with the Charity Commission under number 1190547. The Church was incorporated on 24[th] July 2020 and is controlled by its governing document, a constitution and is governed by its trustees in accordance with its constitution. 

## **Recruitment and appointment of Trustees** 

The day to day running of the church is under the control of a Team comprising of the Pastor, Elders and a team of Deacons which include the church secretary and treasurer. The Pastor, elders, Secretary, and Treasurer make up the elected Trustees. Our Pastor is appointed by the church at a special church meeting and John Hebblethwaite was re-elected for a further five years in Sept 2021. The Pastor is employed under a Letter of Appointment. The Trustees are appointed in accordance with the Church’s Constitution. 

## **Organisational Structure** 

The Church appoints a Pastor and other paid staff as circumstances require. The Pastor leads the Church community in both spiritual and practical ways and chairs the Church meetings. The Church membership elect the Elders, Deacons, and Officers from among themselves to oversee the spiritual and operational aspects of the Church. 

## **Governance code** 

The trustees are aware of the Charity Governance Code and are considering how the relevant matters can be applied to and implemented by the Church.
