3. Minutes of Previous 2020 AGM
These were previously sent out to those members who had requested them. Paddy thanked Bill who was club chair at the time.
4. Treasurer’s Report (Christine Stretesky)
Christine shared the accounts via screenshare. Christine fedback that the accounts are currently being audited with VODA and they will be ready next week. Some items that were worth noting included: the amount of membership fees (income) was low last year. Also there was no income from the Terry O’Gara 5k or the Gordon Smith Relays, as these were not able to take place due to Covid. Anyone who had signed up to last year’s ‘Toby’, will have their monies carried over to a time when it can safely take place or can request a refund if they are unable to take part. Paddy thanked Christine for her hard work and commitment to the club.
5. Secretary’s Report (Elaine Ashton)
2020, our club centenary year, did not end up how any of us could have expected! Nevertheless the club and the committee have continued to work as best we can under difficult and at times, restricted, circumstances.
As a committee, we have continued to meet every month, albeit virtually. And once a month minutes before the committee meeting starts around this time, the whole committee ask the most important question – what is Kev eating for his tea?!
Looking back over the committee meeting minutes from the past year, we have been quite busy. So, here is a quick summary of what we have been doing.
As you may be aware, during the past year, the club has gained charitable status, which means we can apply for extra funding for things like coaching courses etc. We also have a ‘Smile’ account via Amazon and if you click on the link, which is on the website, the club receives cashback on any purchases you make.
Speaking of money, despite many people experiencing financial hardship during this last year, as a club we have continued to support local worthy causes. The virtual Toby in August raised over £1300 for St Oswald’s Hospice, in addition to the extraordinary amount already raised from the Gordon Smith Relays earlier in the year (£1400+). In December, St Oswald’s sent Bill Todd a letter to say that over the last 13 years, we’ve raised nearly £43,500 for them! This is a phenomenal amount! St Oswald’s have recently been in contact to say they are planning the ‘May 5k’ challenge, which as a club we will be supporting. There was something similar last year, where you run 5(k), donate (£)5 and nominate 5 (people). We will share more details about it nearer the time.
Also in December, the Doug Bramley cup, part of the Winter Grand Prix, raised £361 for the Bay Foodbank, based in North Tyneside. So, thank you everyone for your continued generosity to such amazing causes.
For information, we have recently updated the child and adult wellbeing and safeguarding polices, both of which can be found on the club website. We plan to update other club policies and these will be added to the website.
Last week we heard the news that George Page, former club treasurer of 17 years, had sadly passed away. If any of you have read the tributes on the club website, you will have learned George played an important role when the club was re-established in the mid-seventies onwards.
And finally, even though this past year has been tough for all of us, better days are coming!
Paddy thanked Elaine for her hard work and commitment to the club and committee.
6. Chairman’s Report (Paddy Dinsmore)
This is a year we will never forget, a year of challenging times of leaning on one another, of sorrow of the passing of loved ones including family members of the green and gold, and the recent passing of our former treasurer George Page.
But it’s also been a year when we have had inspirational people step forward, it’s been the year of the volunteers and as a committee we are so proud of our fantastic volunteers and so proud of our athletes! The lockdown Hokey Cokey has helped shape a year when we have relied on our volunteers to keep people inspired and lift the mood and you’ve not let us down. Our motto of ‘people need people’ rang true through the past 12 months.
We didn’t hold annual awards last year, however I wanted to call out Julie Collinson, who is our club member of the year. Along with our coaches, Julie has put in so much effort to keep people motivated and keep running, her athletes have risen to the many challenges and kept going when it would have been so much easier to have given up.
As a club we are so lucky to have volunteer coaches and a passionate committee who are
Page 2 of 6
striving to improve both the social and competitive side of our sport. Our committee made up of Elaine Ashton, Christine Stretesky, Andy Wigmore, Kevin Payne, Dave Collinson, Joe Colligan, Tim Nicholson, Richard Pearson, Jen Berry, Emily James, Simon Lyon and Dave Hall. I want to thank you all personally as I know how much work you put in. With these people involved our club is in good hands.
Finally, I wanted to finish by saying I’m proud to be the Chair of Wallsend Harriers, a club with a great history. We have had some fantastic athletes come through our doors over the years and we have some fantastic athletes proud to pull on our vest today. My challenge to all of you is to get that vest back on, enter our local races and run with pride. Now more than ever we need to show the North-East that we are back running together and running stronger than ever!
7. Women’s Club Captain Report (Emily James)
Well it’s been a year like no other, I’m sure you will agree Here’s to hoping we’re not still doing virtual runs in 2023 We’ve stuck together through difficult times, buddied up and run Cos as a team who support and care, we’re really number one.
If I had the time, I’d read out a detailed report in uplifting poetry But I’m a mum and wife and also now an exhausted teacher trainee.
So here’s the highlights starting with some awesome virtual races
The TOG, Gordon Smiths, Blaydon, Good Friday relays and GNR all done with smiling faces Our Grand Prix challenges have spurred us onto some epic personal bests From Myra, Kirsty and Nikki Stewart proudly sporting their green and gold vests.
Spurring on each other is no effort to us Harriers New friendships formed with buddies has helped us push through Covid barriers Joy and Myra, Alex and Nikki, Zara and Christine too Emma P and Emma G with Chrystal in the crew.
We’ve had babies, babies and more to come It’s filled our hearts with cheer
By the time they join the juniors hopefully we all can have a beer.
I cannot pass up the chance to thank a couple of special lasses Julie C and Jennifer B let’s raise our virtual glasses They’ve rallied and they’ve organised, with challenges, plans and bants Their efforts have been on a par with the elastic in Kev’s pants!
Oh my women how I’ve missed you but the end is now in sight And down those muddy xc fields we’ll soon be taking flight Up that dreaded John Reid Road we won’t be moaning through it Laps of the track, throwing a shot, you name it and we’ll do it!
8. Men’s Club Captain’s Report (Simon Lyon)
I am going step away from the norm with my usual report given the last year we have had as a club and athletes. I don’t feel it fair to highlight individual PBs and achievements as not everyone had the opportunity to race. Those who did achieve success, you know who you are
Page 3 of 6
and all I’ll say is, if you can achieve a PB under those restrictions, the future is looking very bright for when things hopefully get back to normal!
What I do want to say is how proud I am of each and every member for the not letting the last year stop us do what we love and live for. It would have been so easy to say “what’s the point?!” This clearly didn’t happen with all the fantastic, competitive, and inspiring results over the last 12 months in our many virtual events. It’s not easy to get yourself mentally pumped up for a solo/virtual event but because of our competitive nature as runners and as a club, we laced up and give it what we could muster and that is all you can ever ask for! I’d also like to personally thank all the people behind the scenes who help put these events together and give us something to aim for. Hopefully, we are over the worst and with our club sessions returning as of last night and we can finally start looking forward to training and racing against each other once again.
One final note, I’d like to thank all the members who have taking the time out to think about the future of club and help populate what I hope to be very successful junior section as we enter the 2030s!
If re-elected as Men’s Captain for a sixth year, I hope my next report is once again filled with PBs and team successes.
10. Motions for Vote
Membership fees
It was proposed that subs stay at the current rate (£50 for seniors and £25 for juniors). The England Athletic fee will stay at £15 for 2021/2022.
All in favour MOTION CARRIED
At this point, all current committee members have technically stood down, pending re-election if proposed.
