We’ve had two major programmes of work … at SARA Hall to help future proof the building not to mention the tidy up after each! We’ve reintroduced pre-covid events including the free monthly cinema and day trips, and we’re now back to full capacity with our weekly calendar of activities. It’s been quite the challenge at times with the fast moving energy markets, the cost of living crisis and the new demands that a post-covid world now requires, but thankfully, we’re still here! Newsletter printing costs have doubled so instead of a four-page spread, we’re printing a double-sided A4 sheet with useful information and updates of our events and activities. To raise extra funds, we’ve brought back table sales and are set to hold them 4 times a year. ## - 2022 2023 The defibrillator referred to last year has been installed outside the building. At the start of 2023, someone attending one of our regular groups needed to use it; thankfully the machine was there and the person involved is doing great. One thing it’s shown us is that there's quite a cost associated with consumables for the machine (£294 for a battery every 5 years and £50 for a set of pads each time the machine is used). We held a raffle across a week at the building and raised £571. These funds will be ring-fenced exclusively for costs associated with the defibrillator. Membership numbers have increased (see overleaf) with a 59% increase in full members and a 7% increase in non-voting members. ## SARA REGISTER OF MEMBERS 297 (+111) full members (permanent residents of the Sudley Area aged 18 years and over and these shall all have voting rights) 175 (+12) non-voting members (well-wishers anywhere) 1 (-) co-opted members (persons who, in the opinion of the Trustees, have special knowledge or experience to offer the Charity. Such members shall be called co-opted members and shall have the right to vote at meetings of the Charity) GROUPS, CLASSES AND SESSIONS AT SARA HALL At the start of the year, we were back to full capacity in the weekly calendar at the hall. There have been a few changes over the year including the departure of a longstanding karate group and the introduction of two new yoga sessions, a pre-school group, an additional drama session and the rebranding of our dropin coffee mornings. AIGBURTH METHODIST CHURCH ## GROUPS, CLASSES AND SESSIONS AT SARA HALL Surgeries, support groups and council events. **MOSSLEY HILL WARD COUNCILLORS** Ward councillors held 12 advice surgeries over the year. In conjunction with one of our local GP surgeries, health trainers provided a 12-week health and wellbeing programme for 30 patients. Councillors helped to arrange three themed craft and storytelling events for children with local author and storyteller Jude Lennon from Little Lamb Tales. A number of community surgeries and a bike marking event took place at SARA Hall over the year. Our dedicated PCSO also attended one of our table sales to distribute faraday pouches for car keys and to offer advice. ## - IM MARSH CONSULTATION **----- Start of picture text -----**

## MAYORAL NEIGHBOURHOOD FUND Last year, Sudley Sings was the recipient of a Mayoral Neighbourhood Fund award. This was used to cover initial setup costs, DBS fees, room charges and insurance. This year, the opportunity arose to make a further application, this time to cover the insurance renewal and 19 weeks of hall charges. Sudley Sings has helped members to develop relationships/friendships beyond weekly meetings, helped members to combat isolation and also helped to improve their communication skills. Thanks to this financial boost covering the last 19 weeks of 2022-23, the group now hopes to continue well into 2024. ## CAPITAL EXPENDITURE Central Heating System - The central heating system was originally installed in 2000 with a replacement boiler being installed 10 years later. Having looked at various options for the hall including heat pumps and solar, the available budget and complexities of working with an old building left gas as the only viable option. In order to future proof the system, all new pipework and radiators were installed alongside remotely controlled thermostats. Electrical Installation Upgrade - Over the years, the electrical system has had various additions and changes. During a recent periodic inspection, it was felt that a full electrical installation upgrade would be preferable to a short-term fix. This would also create a more energy efficient building a number of new light fittings would no longer have switches but would be controlled via sensor - a must for any public building reliant on many different users turning off a switch. Total cost of both projects: £13,659.20 ## DAY TRIPS This year saw the reintroduction of our popular calendar of day trips. Day trips had previously been suspended in March 2020 due to the covid pandemic. Rather than jump in with a full calendar, we opted for a more spaced out offering. A total of 178 people enjoyed trips to Llandudno (April 2022), Keswick (July 2022), Frodsham Market & Chester (September 2022), and Bury Market (March 2023). Given the success this year, we’ve arranged a full calendar of trips for 2023-24. ## COMMUNITY CINEMA A total of 306 people enjoyed 10 films between April 2022 and March 2023. GAS S/C ELECTRIC S/C GAS COST ELECTRIC COST £7000 ## ENERGY COSTS Energy costs have spiralled out of control for everyone. Sadly, as with many charities and small businesses, we’ve been hit hard. The protections afforded to households don’t follow through for us; even though we’re a registered charity, for the purposes of energy contracts, we are treated as a business. £5250 £3500 You will see from the graph, the increase between our old and new energy contracts is massive. This was an expected loss as a result of the £13,659.20 capital expenditure on SARA Hall for a full renewal of the electrical installation and a new heating system. Income from weekday and weekend classes/sessions at SARA Hall has increased by 40% compared with 21/22 figures. This is partly due to the staggered return of classes/sessions following the covid restrictions and also a necessary increase in session charges from November 2022 to cover a sizeable increase in energy costs. Accounts are produced on a receipts and payments basis so figures for lighting and heating are not reflective of actual usage. Towards the end of the year, new energy contracts commenced but there were lengthy delays before bills were generated. The 2022/23 accounts show just 15 days of the new gas contract at a cost of £203.85. Bills for the new electricity contract had not been received by the year end. This is due to commence in November 2023. Boundary changes: Following a Boundary Commission review, from May 2023, SARA will operate across three council wards: Aigburth, Greenbank Park and Mossley Hill. Each of the three wards will be single-councillor wards. Energy contracts review: We hope to be able to revisit the situation regarding the energy costs for charities - the Chairman has asked our MP to make representations on our behalf to Government. Future building maintenance: As with all older buildings, there’s always something that needs doing.
