BFE Annual Return submission to Charities Commission 2024/25
Narrative to accompany receipts and payments accounts
Academic year 24/25 was unfortunately mostly a continuation of 23/24 - Yet another challenging year both for Ethiopia and our project in the troubled area of Amhara in northern Ethiopia. However, despite very challenging conditions, it gives BFE particular pride to report that the school remained open throughout this academic year for a growing number of children despite all the surrounding issues. Huge credit goes again to the staff; the families; the education authorities and our partner charity, Together We Learn on the ground in Ethiopia for achieving this.
The wider factors surrounding the school are finally showing signs of improvement at the end of 2025. The Civil War tensions and pressure on local agriculture are still there but improving. Ethiopia’s overall economy continues to do well compared to other African states. Inflation figures are finally falling and the currency seems to be stabilising after the July 2024 effective devaluation.
Last year we reported that the 23/4 conditions had stopped further investment by BFE despite the need for additional classroom space growing as a result of the School’s success. 25/26 will see our fundraising drive re-start in earnest. This will be to continue the school’s progress toward the goals of a model school that can demonstrate the advantages to all children, especially girls, as well as enhancing local and regional life chances and community involvement.
