Section D
Achievements and performance
Last year we suffered serious disruption from the consequences of the
pandemic. This year we also faced disruptions, bul the club, like the
world, began lo live with the restrictions and limilations. Our membership
continued to grow back towards pre-pandemic levels and we were able to
give members access to more activity.
After a winter of severe restrictions in the early months of 2021, the UK
started to open up again during the Spring of 2021 and we had a phased
return to activity. Throughout this period, we supported and promoted the
government advice and only returned lo club sessions when we were
certain we Gould comply with all guidance. As restrictions were lifted, the
trustees worked with national governing bodies to enable members to
return to activity safely. A range of revised protocols were put in place
and, having learned from previous such experiences, appropriate training
spaceslvenues were chosen and evaluated.
We used our social media channels to stay in regular contact with
members to motivate them to stay active and support their well being. We
worked with other running clubs to create a number of virtual inter-club
relays that encouraged members to participate with solo, safe runs.
With the financial uncertainties still surrounding hosting events, the
trustees decided it was in the club's best interest to postpone planned
events for another year. The vast majority of entrants to the TATA
Sleelman Triathlon wished to be transferred to the 2022 event and the
remainder were given refunds.
With so few events guaranteed to take place, we created a number of
virtual challengeslevents to support members and keep them motivated.
In 2020, Garry Vaughan, one of our most talented and respected
coaches passed away. During June 2021, in his memory and to provide
funding for a memorial, Dean Johnson undertook an astonishing Everest
Challenge. Over a period of 25 hours in the Afan Valley, he completed 64
laps of a mountain trail. In total, he covered 142 km {88 miles) with an
elevation of 9275m - ex￿edIng the height of Everest by more than 400m.
He had a support crew of club members, family and friends and many of
these also covered a considerable distance. It was a demonstration of
the respect everyone had for Garry and what highly motivated members
can accomplish when they work together.
The club celebrated its centenary on 15, October 2021. One of the
oldest sporting clubs in Wales, we successfully bid for a grant from the
Lottery Heritage Fund to document our history. Our President, John
Davies, undertook the mammoth task of writing a book spanning the
period and we embarked on the challenge of bringing all the information
together in a website. The book launch was held in Cwmavon Library in
October 2021. The website is still under construction with a target launch
date of the end of 2022
The autumn of 2021 and winter of 2022 saw the return of some cross
country events and members were successful in representing the club
once more.
