Dover Branch of the Parachute Regiment Association Chairmans End of Year Report.

Since our last AGM in October 2023 the branch has continued to go from strength to strength. Our membership has increased steadily throughout the year, and our public profile is such that we have now received a number of invitations to varying events over the year.

This year as a branch we have come together both in fellowship and in remembrance, beginning in October 23 with our first quiz night, won convincingly by team Fearon. This was followed by a curry with all proceedings going to the branch.

In November we were invited to attend a remembrance service for the Unknown Warrior on the Western Docks in Dover. The Western Dock is where the Unknown Warrior was repatriated to the UK en route to his final resting place in Westminster Abbey. We also paraded 22 members for Remembrance Day with the branch standard.

In December we came together for drinks and a disco prior to Christmas, followed by our annual Boxing Day dip in the channel from Dover Sea front. Where a few brave souls ventured in whilst supported from the beach by friends and family with towels and port.

As we started the new year, in January one of our members, who was having some financial difficulties approached a committee member for help. The branch was able to support him with a loan until he was back on his feet and able to pay it back. Also in January, we received an invitation from the Royal British Legion to attend their Burns night, those able to attend reported an excellent night enjoyed by all.

Our second quiz night was held in February, and even though there were more teams involved it was again won convincingly by team

Fearon (who will be thoroughly searched for electronic devices before the next quiz).

Between the beginning of April 24 and the end of September 24 members of the branch paraded for the following remembrance services:

Zeebrugge Day, April 24

D Day, June 24

Armed Forces Day, June 24

VJ Day, July 24

South Staffs Op Market Garden, Sept 24

Other events attended by branch members were:

Airborne Forces Day in Aldershot, July 24, and the 80th Anniversary of OP Market Garden in Arnhem, Sept 24. This was a joint venture with the West Glamorgan Branch to take a coach of veterans to Arnhem a long weekend. Also included were members of the now disbanded East Kent PRA. A special thanks to our Padre, Stephen Fouche, from myself and the west Glamorgan branch. He was able, at short to conduct a brief service and scatter the ashes of a 2 Para veteran over the DZ at Hinkle Heath.

At our September A branch meeting we were joined by members the East Kent PRA who made a donation to our branch of £700. We in turn were pleased to offer them lifetime honorary membership to the Dover PRA.

Over the year we have added to the branch properties by purchasing a Union Flag, a double stand capable of holding both the branch standard and the Union Flag, and most recently we acquired a 4ft wooden carving of the cap badge and another of Pegasus. All of

were on display at our final event of the recording year, our late Summer Ball. Held in Dover at the Masonic Hall. The ball was well attended by 64 guests and members, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Deal and officials from the RBL. All agreed the meal was excellent, the karaoke whilst epic, less so.

This year the branch has supported a number of charities, donating well over £1000.
