Dover Branch of the Parachute Regiment Association Chairmans Report 2022

## to 2023

We have successfully weathered another year and the branch membership has continued to grow. We now have 35 branch members on the books with more about to join. Branch meetings are averaging around 20 members. Hopefully as our numbers increase so will the attendance.

Thanks to Reg we now have a permanent venue where we can hold meetings without being disturbed or overlooked and as we have seen the proprietors are happy to host us and they do a pretty good social

So, following last Novembers AGM we came together in early December to show off our dubious taste in Christmas Jumpers and enjoy a festive curry lunch. This was followed on boxing day by our annual get together on Dover Sea front, where the hardy few throw themselves into the sea to raise money for the branch.

In May we held a family's day to watch the coronation of our new King, and, at thesame time trying to spot one of our own in his ceremonial yeoman of the guard uniform as he escorted the King and Queen.

Our next social gathering was to have been a summer ball. All the leg work was carried out by our secretary at the time, Jason Hurd, who worked hard finding a venue and negotiating a reasonable price per head. Unfortunately, after all his hard work the ball had to be cancelled due to a lack of interest.

## Guest Speakers

This year we invited two guest speakers, Andy Jones, who gave us an interesting lecture into 1 Para's role within the SFSG. Then at a later meeting, Mike Southall, who regaled us with his personal insights and experiences during the Falklands war. It is the hope of the committee to invite others to speak over the coming year. Suggestions as to who, from the Branch members are welcome.

## Charity

This year Russ Chittenden passed through Dover on his walk clockwise around the UK to raise funds for SSAFA. Branch members

joined him for this leg, and the Branch made a contribution to the fund, which is well on the way to the £50,000 he is hoping to raise. Another contribution was made to a former colleague from 4 Para who is currently raising funds for the homeless.

Finally, from the welfare fund that the Branch voted to maintain we have been able to help one of our own. Something I am particularly pleased about.

## Remembrance week

This year the branch was invited to attend and lay a wreath at the service for the unknown soldier. The memorial for which is located on the western dock in Dover. The parade and the laying of wreaths was followed by a smaller service on the site where the unknown soldier was landed back in the UK.

Members of the branch then paraded on the 11 for a remembrance service held by the British Legion.

Then, on Sunday the 12 most of the branch paraded for the main Dover remembrance service. After which, we gathered at the Cricketers to "swing the lamp" whilst enjoying an excellent curry lunch.

## Looking Forward

There are a few obvious dates that we will have to plan for. Things like:

- Reunions in March, all three battalions hold reunions in Blackpool. I do know that 2 Para still have rooms available.

- •Airborne Forces Day in June.

Armed Forces Day in late June.

- Remembrance parades in November.

As a branch our fund raising has been isolated to events and functions that we have thrown. This year the committee feels we should raise our profile and do more to actively fund raise. Things that have been suggested:

•Approach local supermarkets for permission to fund raise on their grounds.

• Approach Dover Athletic, again to fund raise at home matches. That's just two ideas, any ideas, or suggestions from branch members are welcome.
