The methods adopted for the recruitment and appointment of new trustees

(How are your trustees appointed?):

The charity use Guidelines from Charity Commission. This has not been an easy task due to the after effects of Covid, and the current economic situation. The Trustees have discussed requirements & potential candidates (Trustee Meetings) looking to the Veteran community in particular. NF has looked to address this through FB Veteran Groups, asking for interested individuals to make contact. Also advertised on LinkedIn website.SOMV are looking to appoint a further Trustee from the Veteran community in FY3.

Objectives and activities

What are the formal purposes (objectives) of your charity, as set out in your governing document?

(1) TO RELIEVE FINANCIAL HARDSHIP, NEED, SUFFERING AND DISTRESS AMONGST VETERANS OF ALL BRANCHES OF THE ARMED FORCES AND THEIR PARTNERS, SPOUSES AND DEPENDENTS IN SUCH WAYS AS THE TRUSTEES SHALL THINK FIT, PARTICULARLY BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY BY: A) PROVIDING GRANTS OF MONEY, PROVIDING OR PAYING FOR ACCOMMODATION, ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE IN OBTAINING SUITABLE HOUSING; B) PROVIDING OR PAYING FOR VOCATIONAL TRAINING, DEVELOPMENT OF PERSONAL SKILLS, ADVICE AND MENTORING; C) PROVIDING OR PAYING FOR MEDICAL SERVICES, ITEMS, COUNSELLING OR FACILITIES; D) PROVIDING GRANTS, ITEMS OR SUPPORT FOR SUFFERING CAUSED BY AGE OR INFIRMITY. (2) TO PROMOTE THE RESETTLEMENT AND REHABILITATION OF FORMER ARMED FORCES PERSONNEL INTO THE CIVILIAN COMMUNITY BY SUCH MEANS AS THE TRUSTEES DECIDE, INCLUDING BY PROVIDING TRAINING AND SUPPORT AND BY FOSTERING GOOD RELATIONS BETWEEN FORMER ARMED FORCES PERSONNEL AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY. (3) TO ADVANCE EDUCATION AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING FOR FORMER ARMED FORCES PERSONNEL BY THE PROVISION OF GRANTS, PROVIDING OR PAYING FOR COURSES, LEARNING MATERIALS AND PROVIDING OTHER ITEMS OR SERVICES.’

What are your main activities? (the things you do in order to achieve the objectives) SOMV provides a focal point for veterans & the military community. The main aim of the charity is to help military veterans that have need of support to respond to life events that present welfare needs, by advising / signposting to all appropriate services. In addition, we look to support those disadvantaged, in isolation, in need of educational support & development.

Through fundraising & grants, we aim to provide funding for mental health counselling support, as well as 'crisis' accommodation to veterans that find themselves homeless at short notice, progressing them through to permanent housing. Relief of poverty (daily needs) are supported where possible.

Advice, guidance & support in addressing past service related injuries, medical conditions is also provided.

Mental Health and Well-Being support is being developed with service providers, ensuring that our Veterans have access to a range of specialist services that can meet their individual needs.

How do these activities benefit the public?

Provision of services and supported structure that provides the local military community with a range of integrated services. That provides intervention to support those that are experiencing a significant stressful life event and need immediate support. A reduction in the level of rough sleeping and homelessness amongst the exmilitary population, a reduction in the level of crime associated with a homeless lifestyle of veterans, an increase in the number of military community sustaining resettlement in the community, an increase in the number of ex-service personnel accessing education, training, volunteering and employment opportunities, an increase in the number of the military community accessing appropriate healthcare including specialist substance misuse and mental health services. SOMV work with and link service users into the range of community based support agencies which exist locally. The aim is to develop a network of support with individuals actively encouraged to support each other. The development of mutual aid will be crucial to successful sustainable resettlement in the community.

Please confirm that you have considered the charity Commission’s guidance on ‘public benefit’. Click here for a link to this guidance. Yes

Summary of the main achievements during the period

What did you actually do? (You could add some statistics if you like, and give more detail of your activities):

This is SOMV's FY2, so the buliding of a firm foundation continues. This has been a struggle due to both the ongoing effects of Covid, the Cost of Living Crisis on the economy, and the Public & Business concerns on future prosperity. So for the charity, it has been an achievement to have stability financially, and to have increased services & support to our Veterans.

This FY SOMV have funded 171 counselling sessions for Veterans, provided transportation, supported welfare needs, and have advised on a wide range of care, disability, housing, and mental health requirements. SOMV have received excellent feedback and support from our donors, in the form of many unsolicted letters, and have added to our 'book of pledges' page (website). A number of testimonials from Veterans have also been received, adding further weight to the positive feedback.

Increased awareness has been achieved through Google business, which has seen a signifiant upturn in traffic over the last 6 months.

SOMV have attracted funding from Charity Aid Foundation, as well as grants from Trusts / Foudations in the latter months.. We have worked closely with Raisemore to gain funding through marketing streams, and have received Gift Aid from HMRC.

Financial review

Please comment on your financial position at the end of the reporting period (You might for example, refer to the surplus or deficit you’ve made, or the movement in the fund balances. Are you happy? – the choice is yours. ) Attracting funding has been difficult, as the after ef ects of Covid & the current economic situation have impacted on revenue streams. This being SOMV's second year of operation, the charity would anticipate a slow burn start to funding revenue in FY3, but increasing through the year. The positive news is that SOMV's financial position at the end of the reporting period FY2 will be in a surplus of approx £4,000

What is your policy on reserves? (Your policy should include: why you need reserves, the target level, your current position, your plans to increase or use your reserves and how often you review this policy. If you do not need reserves you should explain the reason.)

At this early stage of the charites existence there would be a limited target level, for obvious reasons. Having reserves will however be an important part of the financial plan as the charity moves forward, as this will provide cover for future risks (ie pandemic).3k is our initial target.

What financial risks do you face?

Funding streams / revenue are the key risk factor for SOMV. This is why SOMV are working with an external source, Raisemore, who are a fund raising / marketing company. They specialise in mailings, and have an exstensive contact data base.

We will be developing grants through Trusts & Foundations in FY3, as this will see improved financial revenue for both core & project work. We will be working closely with Company Solutions to achieve this, as they specialise in this field and have an established data base of contacts.

Legacies / Gifts through Wills, are a further medium that will be promoted through SOMV website, as this has the potential for longer term, large donations.

If any of your funds are in deficit, what are you planning to do about it? .N/A

Funds

If your accounts include any designated or restricted funds, the notes to the accounts need to include a short explanation of the purpose and of each fund.

For example:

Name of fund: “ The vehicle replacement fund ” Purpose: “ To build up sufficient funds to replace vehicles on a 5 year schedule

For each fund you hold, please give the details: N/A

Additional information

This is a chance to add any other information to your report.

For example: if you give grants, what is your policy? Do you want to say anything about your funders or supporters?

SOMV refer to the charities objectives, and use these to guide decisions made regarding grants.

Example of Testimonials

This response is from one Military Veteran we have recently helped and supported who said:

“I left the army in 1996 after approximately 16 years, I had great difficulties in sleeping and being in control of my temper. PTSD was something I never even considered, nor understood as I saw this as a sign of weakness. I was very close to losing everything that mattered to me and knew I had to do something about my issues. My partner told me about a charity called ‘Support Our Military Veterans . I contacted Neil Fox not knowing what to expect; but feeling glad that I had finally made the first step in seeking help.” “I felt totally at ease with Neil and finally felt as if I was talking to someone who understood me, and what I was dealing with. We discussed coping strategies for the various issues that were bothering me and at no stage did I feel under pressure or rushed to discuss previous experiences.” “Support Our Military Veterans has not only helped me personally, but has also had a positive impact on my family and those close to me as they no longer live in fear of my moods and behaviour. I now promote Support Our Military Veterans to any Ex-Service personnel within my social networking circles that are asking for help or advice. I know that Support Our Military Veterans are there for me and my family if I should need them again for

support."
