relief in Ghana. Currently we are focussed
on a village called Aframano, in Ghana.
In the last two years we raised funds via
donations for a project to build the following
in Aframano:
●A kindergarten school building, and
●Teacher accommodation
Building work for the project started in
February 2022 and was completed in June
2022. The kindergarten school opened for
lessons on 1 August 2022.
**The kindergarten** **school**
The school has two large classrooms, each
7m x 6.6m; and two smaller rooms of 4.2m
x 3.2m (one an office, one a store room).
There is also a verandah of 1.8m x 14m. In
total, the space is about 150 sq m.
**The teachers’ accommodation**
Instead of building new buildings, we rebuilt
two derelict buildings. One building has 4
rooms, each of which can accommodate 2
teachers. The other building has 2 rooms,
each of which can accommodate 3
teachers. Thus, at maximum occupancy
there could be 14 teachers in residence.|
|||We raised further funds to pay for furniture
for the kindergarten school, so the children
would have tables and chairs.
After the building work was completed
Turbo Ghana handed the kindergarten
school and teacher accommodation over to
the local education authority to run and
manage.

Turbo Ghana’s most recent project (2022)
in Aframano was to build a kindergarten
school for 120 pupils, with teacher
accommodation for up to 8 teachers.
This project was a priority for the Head
Teacher, Seth Opoku, of the existing junior
school, the Community Assemblyman
Kwasi Alare, and the parent-teachers
association, partly to improve the children’s
education from a young age and for longer-
term economic empowerment of the
villagers. There was also a child protection
element to this request: parents are obliged
to work on their farms during the day, and it
was important that children were safe
during that time.
The community had experienced difficulties
in getting teachers to come and teach in the
village, because of its remoteness, and
shared the need for basic accommodation
for teachers that wanted to stay during the
week to avoid long commutes every day. So
as well as the kindergarten school, Turbo
Ghana funded building two smaller
buildings for teacher accommodation. The
development and design of the school was
led by the local community, coordinated by
Assemblyman Kwasi Alare and Head
Teacher Seth Opoku.

The delivery of the kindergarten school and
accommodation has transformed the
delivery of education in the village of
Aframano for very young children and their
parents.
**Future projects and visit to Ghana**
To further provide access to education and
water for the population around Aframano,
the community in Aframano have now
requested a kindergarten school, teacher
accommodation and a borehole
in Kotonho, Ghana. Kotonho is two hours
walk from Aframano, which is too far for
preschool children from Kotonho to travel.
It would also serve families living|
Anyankamamu an hour away. Currently children based in Kotonho and Anyankamamu miss out on essential education. The local community are very keen to enable young children to access education early in their development, particularly for girls who often have lower opportunities for accessing education in villages in Ghana. The kindergarten school in Kotonho is projected to allow access to education for 70 pupils. The community in Aframano have also identified the need for a manual borehole (there is no electricity in Kotonho). The borehole would ensure access to clean water for 100 people. In January 2023, Professor Mark Ryan made a trip to Ghana to (6 – 21 January) to meet with the local parents, children and teachers, executives of the parent-teachers association, the Queen Mother and the sub Chiefs of Aframano, and the local Community Assemblyman Kwasi Alare to estimates costings to build the school, accommodation and boreholes in Kotonho.
