Our Aims and Objectives

Purposes and Aims

The objects of the CIO are, for the benefit of the public, to maintain, improve, promote and preserve the area known as Steetley Meadows and/or such other land in the locality of Ryton for public recreation and leisure, and to conserve, protect and improve the physical and natural environment of the area.

Ensuring our work delivers our aims

Throughout the reporting year the Trustees and volunteers have carried out a programme of maintenance and mowing to ensure that the Meadows have been accessible to all. The maintenance of the meadows is also essential to provide a good environment for wildlife. There are regular working parties with a group of volunteers.

Annual Review

Throughout the period from November 2022 – October 2023 village residents and visitors have continued to spend time outside enjoying the benefits of being in nature and using the meadows throughout the year for exercise, dog walking and to maintain their wellbeing.

Unfortunately, the container that houses the Trust’s tools was broken into in early summer and a large number of hand tools were stolen. The insurance claim was processed quickly and efficiently and the stolen items have all been replaced. An additional lock has been added to the container.

Volunteers have contributed 227 hours of labour during work parties. A further 50 hours of volunteer time has been contributed through administration and management tasks. A willow tit habitat management event took place with 16 volunteers in collaboration with Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, attaching ageing birch logs to trees as potential nesting sites and seeding teasel and thistle as food sources

Who has visited Steetley Meadows?

The Meadows attract people of all ages, particularly residents of the village who use it on a regular basis for walking, dog walking and recreation. Visitors from further afield also make use of the Meadows for recreation. During the year events have been held for Cub and Beaver groups and an individual working towards their Duke of Edinburgh award. The meadows have also been visited by groups from other wildlife trusts There are regular work parties to maintain the meadows and a volunteer day to plant hedging. New signage has been installed in both Steetley Meadows and the Water Meadow and a downloadable circular path is available for visitors to follow.

Financial Review

Ryton Conservation Trust has been allocated funding from Ryton-on-Dunsmore Parish Council. A small income is received for the angling rights. The balance is slightly increased by comparison with the previous year as a result of the insurance claim.

The Trust continues to maintain a robust reserve, for use in case of future purchases of large capital items, such as a tractor.

Structure, Governance and Management

Ryton Conservation Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, established on 14[th] July 2020. The organisation has a constitution which established the objects and powers of the company and is governed under its provisions. There must be a minimum of three Trustees who manage the affairs of the CIO. All Trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no benefits from the Trust.

Risk Management

Procedures are in place to ensure the health and safety of trustees, volunteers and visitors to the Meadows. Risk assessments have been prepared for a range of conservation activities. Risk assessments are carried out jointly by Ryton Conservation Trust and visiting organisations prior to working parties coming to the meadows.

Responsibilities of the Trustees

The Trustees are required to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of the affairs of the CIO including its income and expenditure for the financial year. The trustees are responsible for maintaining proper accounting records and safeguarding the assets of the CIO.
