This is the first report of the registered charity which is a former charity excepted from registration. ## **Objects** The principal purpose of the Church is the advancement of the Christian Faith according to the principles of the Baptist Denomination. The Church may also advance education and carry out other charitable purposes in the United Kingdom and/or other parts of the world. ## **Our Activities** The Charity operates from Sabden Baptist Church. The building and the graveyard are owned by the Baptist Union. The Charity is responsible for the maintenance of the building and the cost of utilities and insurance. Covid 19 restricted the opening of the Church until Palm Sunday – March 2021. Prior to that date we managed to keep all the meetings running using Zoom Technology. In September 2020 work commenced on improving the building including new toilets. When work commenced dry and wet rot were found in the roof which necessitated the total expenditure of £125,000. We were also able to purchase new chairs and tables. The work was finally completed to enable us to re-open on Palm Sunday. During Lock Down we continued with our weekly Church activities which included Bible Study on a Wednesday evening and music practice on a Thursday. This was effected by means of Zoom. We also had fellowship at the Church graveyard where we formed new flower beds, planted roses and bulbs and mowed the grass and generally tidied the grounds so much so the graveyard became a place of tranquillity where we could picnic – at a safe distance – and admire the views of Pendle Hill. At the same time a lot of hard work has gone into making the church garden area look exceptional with a rockery and plants donated from various gardens. Initially on return to the building there was no singing nor could we have tea and coffee. During Zoom time we continued to welcome visiting preachers and now we are able to invite them to our Church once each month. Our regular Sunday services are well attended for the size of our fellowship. Amongst our weekly services a Communion Service is held on the first Sunday of each month. On Tuesday mornings we have a Caring and Sharing Group. Our weekly Bible Study continues each Wednesday evening and teaching is done by a volunteer who challenges our thoughts and opinions on various passages of the bible. Music practice is held on a Thursday evening and this is a worship evening commencing with prayer and the choosing and playing of songs and hymns for the following Sunday. The Music group plays a very active part in the preparation for our Sunday services. Throughout the year we hold Social events and an annual BBQ. We also held an “Away Day” when most of our fellowship attended a day of reflection and looking forward. We also actively participate in several activities with the local Anglican and Catholic churches in the village including Remembrance Sunday, a Christingle Service and the village carol service. From Monday to Friday each week the Church building is used by Branching Out – a pre-school organisation running from 7.00 am to 6.00 pm. They cater for up to 25 children each day. They pay a rent and contribute to utility expenses. Ofsted have given good reports on the work they carry out and they have dedicated staff. We are always pleased to see new people taking part in our church activities and everyone in the church takes an active part no matter how small. ## **Trustees Report (continued)** ## Year Ended 31[st] December 2021 ## **Financial review** The attached receipts and payments account and statement of assets and liabilities set out the finances of the church in the accounting period. At the year end the church held £46,193 in unrestricted bank accounts and investments, together with £22,486 invested as the Dawson Trust, administered by the Baptist Union Corporation which can be used with agreement for works on the church building. The property trustees are the Baptist Union Corporation. ## Reserves policy The trustees aim to hold £1o,000 with the balance held for improvements to the buildings, emergency repairs and to provide additional income from the investments. ## Risk management Risks to the charity include those mitigated by comprehensive safeguarding policies and training and insurance covering buildings, contents and activities. A formal risk assessment is to be worked on, ## **Structure, Governance and Management** The Church is an independent charity. In accordance with our Constitution Trustees are appointed as required and aim to have a broad range of skills and contacts within the Church community. The trustees are also the Deacons of the church. The Charity is a Charitable Incorporated organisation number 1190379 governed by it’s Constitution. Approved by order of the Trustees and signed on their behalf on 3[rd] May 2022 Trustee ## **Independent Examiners Report to the Trustees of Sabden Baptist Church** I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2021. ## **Responsibilities and basis of report** As the charity's trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## **Independent examiner's statement** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe: - (1) accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by Section 130 of the Act; or - (2) the accounts do not accord with those records. I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
