Who We Are
Scarisbrick New Road Baptist Church (hereafter referred to as the church} is made up of
people from all walks of life who choose lo share our lives together as one big family,
joined together through our faith in Jesus Christ. As a church, and registered charity, our
purpose is to advance the Christian faith according to the principles of the Baptist tradition.
To help us achieve this we are associated with Baptists Together, at a national level, along
with the North West Baptist Association, at a regional level. Across Southport and the
wider Merseyside area we also work alongside other churches of different denominations,
as well as other Christian charities, to further support and enhance our aims and
objectives. Our church community meets regularly for worship as well as to support one
another and our wider community through a range of activities and initiatives. We raise
funds primarily through donations made by our church community, and occasionally
through grant applications from organisations sympathetic to our aims, in order to
financially support the work we undertake.
As a member of the Baptist Union the church subscribes to the Baptist Union's Declaration
of Principle=
That our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, is the sole and
absolute authority in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as revealed in the
Holy Scriptures, and that each church has liberty, under the guidan￿ of the Holy
Spirit, to interpret and administer His laws.
That Christian Baptism is the immersion in water into the name of the Father, the
Son and Holy Spirit, of those who have professed repentance towards God and
faith in our Lord Jesus Christ who 'died for our sins according to the Scriptures., was
buried, and rose again on the third day,.
That it is the duty of every disciple to bear personal witness to the gospel of Jesus
Christ, and to take part in the evangelisation of the world.

Secretary's Report

Throughout the year the Trustees have met regularly to continue to discuss the day-to-day
business of the church. Alongside these there have been regular Church Meetings where
we all come together to participate in further discussions and vote on various matters.
These meetings happen after we have had our main worship seNice and socialised over
lunch before the business part of our time together.
This year we have mainly been focussed on the state of our building and the repairs and
improvements that need to be made to make things safer, warmer and more appealing.
This is part of a longer term that will continue into 2025 and beyond.
We have managed to make some improvements this year, starting with a working group
who cleared the back garden which had become quite overgrown. The brick benches had
also become unstable with the bricks crumbling and the wooden seats becoming rotten, so
these were knocked down. There are now various plans in place for future improvements.
We also managed to remove various bits of rubbish to the tip at the same time. Alongside
this there has also been a couple of working parties throughout the year to have a "Big
Clean" throughout the building.
In the summer we were able to purchase 64 second hand chairs from another Baptist
Church and these have replaced a number of the pews in the Sanctuary. These have
been a big hit with the congregation as they are quite a bit more Comfortable than the
pews. It has also made it easier to set up Cafe Church each monthl

The Ladies have got together this year to meet up on a regular basis to have lunch out at
various places. The first was due to a generous bequest from an old member, Jean Buffet,
who left some money to the ladies of the
church. Ann and Linda arranged the first one at
Scarisbrick Marina and this has continued,
culminating in a lovely meal at the Mount
Pleasant for Christmas Lunch.
Mission Impossible continues to run here in our
building before the Easter break and various
schools come along to experience the Easter
story in an interactive, exciting way.
In September our Place Of Welcome hosted a
Macmillian coffee morning along with a cake
sale. A number of books were also donated
and offered for sale as well. This was a great a
success and we were able to send a donation
to Macmillian Cancer Support.
Christmas and Easter Services were held as
usual. Easter breakfast of bacon barns, ￿real
pastries before the Worship Celebration was
most appreciated. At our Christmas Eve Carols
By Candlelight and Christmas Day Celebration
we welcomed a number of visitors.
This year's sermon series have included.. Fruits
Of The Spirit, Romans, The Bible Series, Jesus
The Source Of Life, Salvation & Truth. These
have been well received both within our church
fellowship and through YouTube, which has
continued to grow. Our YouTube channel has
all our services, some reflections for Easter and
Christmas and over 90 or so songs.
Our usual Church activities have continued to run throughout the year, including,. Compass
Groups, Sparklers, Ignite, Radiate and Places Of Welcome. Our building has been used
for various groups including,. exercise classes, The Learning Rooms who play football,
First Aid courses, Birthday parties, Linaker Primary school for Easter Services & Christmas
Nativity performan￿.

Minister's Report
Daniel Parkes
When it comes to putting pen to paper, or rather fingers to keyboard, I find that I really
need to be careful. And that's because it is easy to blow our own trumpet about all that we
have done and achieved during the course of the last year. In some ways that is what this
report is about, but in reality it is far more that that. It is about what God has been doing in
the life of our church fellowship and ￿lebrating his blessings. Therefore I don't make any
apologies for repeating some of what others have also highlighted because I believe that
God has been good and faithful, and that is worth shouting about.
l am excited that our young peoples work is not just doing well but is thriving. It is really
very good that we have a mid-week group for toddlers (Sparklers}, a new Sunday club
(Ignite) and a pre-teenlteen group (Radiate). Having heard of so many other church
congregations that are struggling to sustain young peoples groups, attract young people,
or who simply dream of having such
groups, we are indeed in a blessed and
privileged position.
As l observe the
ministry to
young people
across
Southport through my involvement with
the Southport And Area Schools Workers
Trust, l am mindful that there is still so
much more that could be done and how
much need there is out there.

Sadly the tragic events of 29" July where Alice, Bebe
and Elsie lost their lives and 11 others were critically
injured had a profound impact on our community and
beyond. It was encouraging to receive a number of
cards and emails from Baptist colleagues and other
Baptist churches from around the country offering
their support and prayers at this difficult time. On the
Sunday immediately following the attack our worship
gathering was deliberately more reflective with our
focus being on the assuran￿ of hope. For a short
time, our Facebook profile and welcome slide logo
were changed to pink in solidarity- The events of that
terrible day have continued to inform our thinking and
given us cause to reflect at various times and will no
doubt have a long lasting effect on our community.

It almost seems surreal that later in the summer we were blessed with new (second-hand)
chairs for the Sanctuary. Having been the topic of many conversations at various times
throughout the years, we agreed that, should the opportunity arise to acquire a set of
chairs, we could take advantage of it. And indeed we did when a number of chairs were
advertised on eBay. After making an enquiry an offer was made and we were surprised
when it became apparent that more chairs were available than we initially thought. In fact,
it was the perfect number to give us four full rowsl Having hired a van to arrange

collection it seemed a shame to use it for just this one trip so we finally got around to
undertaking a large tip run of garden waste, and items from the boiler room. Since then
the chairs have made a huge difference to our cafe style worship celebrations and were
also much appreciated when we hosted safeguarding training for ourselves and a number
of other Baptist churches.
During the year we have made use of two resources from The Bible Society to support our
Sunday ministry. The Bible Series gave us an overview of the Bible and it's different
genres and sections. Following this we dived into the book of Romans, being both
challenged and encouraged. Later in the year we explored the Fruit Of The Spirit,
rediscovering these core qualities of the Christian faith.
During the week our Compass Groups have met to explore
and reflect on these topics in greater detail. I have been
encouraged by how these two groups have developed and
that those who are part of them have valued meeting
together and supporting each other.

At the beginning of 2024 we re-launched our Star Seekers
All-Age Celebrations on the first Sunday of each month.
These space themed cafe style gatherings are intended to
be welcoming and accessible for everyone as well as trying
to be a bit more fun. Our resident alien Trinz, a sock
puppet, helps provide a light hearted introduction to each
topic. With his help we have thought about what it means
to follow Jesus in various ways. The Euro 2024 football tournament and the Paris
Olympics provided opportunities to link our faith to sport, thinking about Jesus taking the
penalty and running the race. These Star Seekers celebrations also linked in with Harvest
where we focused on the work of Operation Agri in Sri Lanka.

The run up to Easter On￿ again saw our building transformed into a secret spy base for
the annual "Mission Impossible" Easter presentation organised by the Southport And Area
Schools Workers Trust (SAS￿}. It is a huge privilege to be involved with this, not just as
a church hosting it, but also personally for those of us who volunteer on the team.
It has been a real blessing to welcome new people into our fellowship and to see them
grow in their faith. Church membership is an important part of who we are as we covenant
together and it has been encouraging that some of those who have joined us recently have
chosen to become members. Wouldn't it be brilliant to see this trend continue as we not
only grow in faith but also grow numerically and continue to attempt great things for God?

Safeguarding
Kim Parkes
We continue to take the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults seriously, ensuring
that our safeguarding policy is implemented and reviewed annually. The shortened policy
statement is displayed around the church building and each person working with children
andlor vulnerable adults has a copy of the full safeguarding policy. Copies of the policy
are available on request from the church Offi￿ and freely available on the church website.
In October we hosted Level 2 and Level 3 training to enable many of our church family to
take part, as well as welcoming people from other Baptist churches in the area. Level 1
training was given through a video to all at theAGM in February 2024.
There have been no reported safeguarding incidents during 2024.

Our Building
Our church building has existed since the late 1800's with the Sanctuary and offices being
redeveloped in the mid-1960's. It was at this time that The Tabernacle and Hoghton Street
Baptist Church, joined together to form a single church.
The original school part of The
Tabernacle remains, comprising of a
kitchen, toilets, sports hall, lounge and
assorted smaller rooms over ￿0
floors. The more modern part of the
building comprises of our
main
auditorium along with toilets, a meeting
room and office. Our rooms are used
by the church for our weekly Sunday
celebrations as well as being used by
community groups during the week.
Our building is also the home of the
Southport And Area Schools Workers
Trust (SAs1J￿) who have office, studio
and storage spa￿. We continue to offer our whole building to them for the annual Mission
Impossible event where local schools are invited to come
and take part in a creative retelling of the Easter story. We
have also supported other community groups, including
choral group The Hoghton Players, exercise class Dolly's
Bootcamp, new mum's keep fit group Sweaty Mama's and
The Learning Rooms who all value using the large hall. The
hall is also an asset for hosting children's Birthday parties
and we have welcomed many young people and their
families to celebrate, along with bouncy castles and local
entertainer Mr Stix.
The Light Lounge continues to support our weekly Place Of
Welcome and our Radiate youth group as well has hosting
our Thursday morning Compass Group.

Gardens & Landscaping
Robert Shallcross
Work on the church garden continued throughout the year despite rather mixed weather.
The main focus of work was on the Commemorative Garden where the ground cover
membrane was removed together with a number of self sown shrubs and weeds. This
enabled the soil to be thoroughly weeded, a task that is ongoing. It also enabled new
species to be planted in memory of loved ones together with a drift of Minnow daffodil
bulbs which were planted by the children as part of Ignite on Remembrance Sunday and
which should be flowering in the spring. There is still a good amount of space for other
memorial plantings if members of the congregation wish to do so, please have a word with
me as to what you might like and think appropriate.
The main border at the front of the building was dramatically altered with the removal of
the three trees that had become a danger due to their age and branches falling off. The
resulting spaces are in the process of being re-planted. This border attracts the most
favourable attention from passers by including the staff at Northwood's Estate Agency who
use our car park.
13

The rest of the garden has been routinely maintained as time allows and thanks to Robert
and Carole Carr for their valiant efforts to keep the weeds at bay from the rest of the car
park.
The efforts of a good number of the congregation, and especially the brute for￿ of Timmy,
Samuel, Annabelle and Sophie, to clear the garden at the rear of the building means that
this space is now ready for its redevelopment and in the meantime a goodly show of
daffodils has brightened the spa￿.
Compass Groups
Mark Hibell
As a church we meet every Sunday for worship, prayer and to hear the word of God. Our
Compass Groups are a midweek extension of this, when small groups meet to consider
and discuss the previous Sunday's scripture in more depth. As part of our spiritual journey
and growth, we normally spend an hour
or so in a guided conversation, seeking
a clearer appreciation of what God
would have us understand and how this
might impact on our life as a fellowship
and as individuals. Contributions from
all are welcome and encouraged, but
there is no pressure to say anything if
you would prefer just to listen and to
think. I should also mention that these
times together are completely informal,
fun and often include very good biscuits!
We currently have ￿0 groups which meet either on a Wednesday evening in someone's
home or Thursday morning in the church lounge. There is no commitment to attend either
one or the other. Some people choose to mix and match according to what else they have
going on that week and, if the numbers and the demand exist, we would be delighted to
start further groups to meet particular needs (such as a Christian basics" group for those
just starting to discover what faith is all about} or to provide further options regarding time
or location.
I would encourage you to try and get to a Compass Group each week as this is where we
learn, grow and flourish as we try to live our Christian lives. We also have the Chan￿ to
get to know each other better socially.
And, of course, there's the biscuitsl

Ladies Lunches
Linda Johnson & Ann Obayuwana
Ladies lunches started on the 11th of April, with a generous gift from a member of the
church who had died and left it in her will with the church kindly paying the outstanding
shortfall. The meal was held at Scarisbrick Marina, a wonderful canal side cafe.
Following a discussion it was decided to make the
Ladies Lunches a regular event. Since that time we
have been to lunch every 6 weeks or so, during school
holidays if possible, so as many ladies can attend. We
have be￿een 5 and 11 ladies regularly attending, and it
has been very successful in allowing us to get to know
each other better.
We have had lunch at a number of recommended
restaurants and have agreed to go to different place
each time with venues including, The Imperial and The
Bold. In December we were hosted by The Mount
Pleasant on Manchester Road for a lovely Christmas
Lunch where we also exchanged Christmas gifts.
Following on from this we agreed to try places in
Tarleton or around that area to make it easier for ladies
living in this area to attend.
We are very privileged to have a renowned restaurant critic who has been to a number of
restaurants to test the food and services. We would like to thank Carole for thisl In 2025
we're looking forward to continuing to meet for lunch and trying new venues.
Places Of Welcome
Daniel Parkes
On Friday mornings we fling open the doors to the Light Lounge to provide respite from the
world outside and invite folk in to our Place Of Welcome,. This is a valuable opportunity to
share with one another and hear each others stories over free refreshments. Although
there is a wide selection of other activities available, including jigsaw puzzles and board
games, talking is the favourite pastime. It's been joked that there is enough material to
compile several memoirs which would certainly make for an enlightening readl
The Place Of Welcome is open to all and is a safe space for people to be themselves and
to know that they are valued.

The numbers of families coming each week to our toddler group have continued to grow
which is greatly encouraging. There has been a lovely group of 15 or so children bringing
along their Mums, Dads, Grandparents and
Carers along on a Wednesday morning to
play or relax a little in a safe environment and
learn through play and make friends. There
are lots of lovely toys to play with, others to
chat to, as well as a Chan￿ for a cuppa and a
biscuit or two for the grown ups and snacks
and drinks for the children.
Parent
Toddler
Our annual Christmas party took place as usual on the last Wednesday before the
Christmas break. With a little Nativity for them to join in with songs and actions there was
also a special visit from Father Christmas who handed out presents to the children. We
finished with a bigger buffet snack break as we enjoyed the party.
gnite
Susan & Robert Shallcmss
Ignite is our Sunday morning group for younger children. We started in January 2024
meeting once a month until September when we began meeting twice a month on the
second and fourth Sundays. We have had a total of 10 children, but our usual attendance
tends to be between 4 and 6, ranging from age 5 to 12.
Our programme for the year has been as follows..
• Jesus calls His Disciples
• The Calming of the Storm
Pentecost
The Lost Son
g Easter
David and Goliath
• The Feeding of the Five Thousand
• Miriam looking after Moses
The Parable of the Sower
g Three sessions forAdvent
and Christmas
Remembran￿ Sunday (including planting daffodils)
Each session tells the bible story usually using a video followed by a quiz, craft work and a
game linked to the theme and a snack. We have produced a board with photos and
examples of the various activities we have done over the year and this is on display in the
vestibule.
We look fO￿ard to the work continuing and expanding, and for this we ask for the prayers
of the fellowship.
16

Radiate
Kim & Dan Parkes, Kathryn & Alastair Johnson
Our weekly youth group for school years 6-11 has grown from strength to strength in 2024.
We continue to meet on Friday evenings during term-time and numbers continue to swell
as people who were invited by friends are now inviting their friends. We have welcomed
26 young people through the doors since we started, averaging between 15 and 20 young
people each week.
FAITH
The young people enjoy some free time with a choice
of football, basketball, badminton, pool, Lego, board
games or the Wii games console, while our tuck shop
remains a popular feature of the evening. We end
each session with a sofa time in which we catch up
on how each other's weeks have gone, play a game
and have a brief Bible slot. During 2024 we have
been exploring the Bible Heroes cards produced by
The Action Bible, finding out about characters such as
Noah, Esther, Moses, Jonah and Miriam. We have
also enjoyed one-off sessions including Nerf nights,
baking, a basketball tournament and an opportunity to
have our own Mission Impossible experience.
Mission
Barbara Cross
The BMS (Baptist Missionary Society) World Mission is the missionary arm of the Baptist
Church worldwide, supported through the generous giving of its worldwide family. Working
across 14 countries in Africa, Asia, South America, Europe, and the Middle East, its
mission workers seek to bring the love of God. This is achieved through healthcare,
education, outreach, church planting, recruiting and training local mission workers, and
supporting and training church leaders, to name but a few of the areas in which BMS
World Mission works. The BMS World Mission website has lots of information about the
various projects and mission workers, as well as prayer points and other resources.
As a church BMS World Mission is one of the organisations we support through our tithe.
Our mission link workers. Dave & Michele Mahon, who are based in Peru, keep us up-to-
date through regular newsletter updates, prayer requests and short videos about their
work and family life.
If you would like to be more involved, why not join the BMS birthday scheme? On your
birthday you will receive a birthday card from BMS World Mission, and all we ask in return
is that you give a donation towards this vital work. Barbara will be more than happy to add
you to the list!

Digital Mission & Ministry
Daniel Parkes
Our online ministry via YouTube has remained an important way of connecting with people
who are unable to attend our worship ￿lebratIonS in person. Whether they are part of our
fellowship here in Southport or from further afield, it has been a huge encouragement to
hear how God has been using this aspect of who we are to shine his light. As such, our
weekly livestream remains a significant part of our mission and ministry. Although we
haven't had as much contact with Linaker Primary School as we have had in the past, it
was wonderful to welcome the Reception children at Christmas to perform their "Wriggly
Nativity" which we were able to record and make it available to the school.
The statistics of our YouTube channel continue to amaze me and this year has been no

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024
The Irustees submit their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 December
2024. The financial statements follow the requirements of the revised Charities Statement of
Recommended Practice {FRS 1021 (second edition - October 20191- Accounting and Reporting by

is governed by its Constitution which was last amended on 13 February 2020.
Recruitment and appointment of the trustees
The board seeks to achieve a balan￿ of skills and experience amongst the trustees. In order to
maintain this, the board reviews its skill and experience mix each year and seeks to recruit new
trustees when necessary, subjecl to the conditions set out in the governing document. Nominations
are further sought from church members.
Appointment is made by vating on those nominated at an ordinary church meeting. Candidates who
receive votes from at least 50°/o of members voting are appointed as trustees.
Each calendar year one third (or if not a multiple of three, the number nearest to one thirdl of the
current trustees shall retire from office.
Trustee induction and training
The current board of trustees will provide any new trustee with an oveNiew of the timetable of board
meetings, copies of the re￿nt minutes of meetings, the recent reports and accounts and explain
their general and specific responsibilities.
Ongoing training is provided by the board of trustees as and when the need arises.
Risk management
The condition and upkeep of the building continues to be a major challenge. During the year we
made a concerted effort to clear out surplus items and accumulated rubbish, as well as clearing the
garden area which was becoming hazardous. In relation lo our bank accounts, interest rates on our
long term savings will be reducing from 2025 with lower than expected returns. While we are not
wholly reliant on the interest it wll have some impact on our long term project planning for building
upkeep and improvements.
Organisational structure
Scarisbrick New Road Baptist Church is governed by its board of truslees that are responsible for
the strategic direction and policy of the charity.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objects of the charity
The trustees have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance
on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning future activities.
The purpose of the charity is to advance the Christian faith according to the principles of the Baptist
denomination. The charity may also advance education and carry out other charitable purposes in
the United Kingdon andlor other parts of the world.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
Review and summary of the year
Throughout the year the charity has continued to meet regularly for worship and prayer as well as
provided a range of associated activities as the more detailed annual report illustrates.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Principal funding sources
The principal sources of funding for the charity continue to be donations from the church
congregation in addition to some giving from other Christian groups.
During the year the charity re￿iVed income of £62,16412023 - £57,996) and spent £74,795 {2023-
£71,878) and as a result produced a deficit of £12,631 (2023 £13,882). This deficit is mostly
attributable to the sustained large increase in the cost of gas and electricity in the prior year of a little
over £12,900. Without this additional cost the ongoing deficit position had reduced well.
Reserves policy
In order to maintain the day to day running of the charity the trustees have agreed that an amount of
no less than 6 months running costs should be available in reserves at any one point in time. They
have also considered the need to set aside funding to cover potential property repairs and
redevelopment following the most recent quinquennial building inspection, dated May 2023.
The trustees have designated £40,000 as the emergency reserve which will cover a period of 6
months expenditure. This is held in a 95 day notice account with Natwest.
The trustees have also designated £50,000 as the seed fund for building maintenance and
redevelopment. This was held in a 1 year deposit account with the Baptist Union Corporation which
matured on 30 November 2023. The interest was transferred to the current account while the
remaining £50,034 was reinvested in a 3 month Baptist Union Corporate Deposit Account.
In the year to 31 December 2024 the amount available in free, unrestricted reseNes was £58,249
(2023 - £69,155) which is expected to cover expected annual deficits and unexpected expenditure in
the short term.

BAPTIST CHURCH CIO
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024
We report on the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 De￿mber 2024, which
are set out on pages Vl to Xlll.
Respective responsibilities of trustee5 and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees
consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the
Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is our responsibility to:
li} examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,
lil) to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity
Commission (under section 145151{b) of the Charities Act, and
lili) to state whether particular matters have come to our attention.
Basis of independent examiner's statement
Our examination was carried out in accordance with general directions given by the Charity
Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and
comparison of Ihe accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any
unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees
concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would
be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present
'true and fair, view and the report is limited lo those matters set out in the slatement below.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention..
which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the
requirements..
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act,. and
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and Gomply with the
accounting requirements of the Charities Act
have not been met., or
b) to which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper
understanding of the accounts to be reached.
