## **Achievements and Performance**

Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.

This has been the first year of Diggle Community Brass. (DCB). DCB started with virtually no resources beyond the enthusiasm and determination of its founding members. Its birth occurred in the early stages of a global pandemic accompanied by the considerable regulatory controls and restrictions, especially severe in DCB’s home in North West England. Accordingly, objectives were confined by stark realism and prioritised:  Creation, identity and consolidation  Financial security and prudence  Engagement and well-being of membership  Any safe and legal activity to entertain the wider community All have been achieved beyond original expectations. Incorporation as a CIO gave corporate existence and identity and facilitated essential business and operational progress. The essential good housekeeping of any reputable organisation commenced; bank account, insurance, licensing, membership of an invaluable national umbrella body and the like. DCB branded itself and set up necessary communication channels for voice and data messaging and promotion. Finances have been substantially expanded by earnings from performance (albeit limited by pandemic controls), donations and charitable grants. Balance was struck successfully between optimising expenditure on essentials (e.g. insurance and PPE) and desirables (e.g. liveried clothing for performance outdoors), whilst remaining solvent and learning to live within budgets assured by DCB’s own membership revenue. A successful trial of receiving payment via SMS was implemented at Christmas.

Engagement of and contribution from membership was remarkable. It strengthened and sustained the organisation. Systematic weekly contact, via online group video, proved a reasonably effective substitute for the social dimension of conventional rehearsal and performance gatherings. Whilst hard to quantify, it is highly likely that this provided support and encouragement for many members during the quite serious depression of local pandemic lockdown. The internal bond is stronger than a year earlier. DCB was proud to contribute to a virtual video performance contest, “Whit Spirit”, for the joy of playing and to remember the local Whit Friday celebrations, sadly cancelled by pandemic control necessities. The year ended on a highly encouraging note as lockdown rules were eased. It enabled DCB’s Development Group of young people to resume playing and learning sessions. DCB succeeded in delivering benefit to its wider community. Individual members performed outdoors in their own neighbourhoods. Safely distanced and moisture guarded small groups performed in local and city centre locations at Christmas 2020, brightening the darkness of winter in lockdown for hundreds of people.

The year ended with a strong, solvent lively organisation driven by its membership in hope and readiness for resumption of a full range of band activities in full company.
