The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their Annual Report and Financial Statements for the period ended 30 June 2022.
Reference and administrative details
Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary (“the Charity”) is a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO), registered in England and governed by a CIO foundation constitution dated 22 June 2020.
The Charity is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales under registered number 1190048.
The registered address of the Charity is 71A High Street, Harpenden, AL5 2SL.
Statement on public benefit
The objectives and activities, and achievement and performance sections of this report clearly set out the activities which the charity undertakes for the public benefit. The Trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty in section 4 of the Charities Act 2006 to have due regards to public benefit guidance published by the Commission in determining the activities undertaken by the charity.
Objectives and activities
The objectives of the Charity as defined in the constitution are:

1) For the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering of hedgehogs native to the UK (Erinaceus Europaeus) in need of care and attention, and, in particular, to provide and maintain rescue homes or other facilities for the reception, care and treatment of such animals and to rehabilitate and care for them so that they can be released back into the wild.

2) To advance the education of the public in matters pertaining to hedgehogs and other wildlife and their natural environment.

3) To further the conservation and preservation of the hedgehog species, in particular by:

a. Promoting the practical welfare of hedgehogs including their habitats;
-
b. Educating the public, particularly the younger generation, to appreciate and respect nature and wildlife particularly in relation to hedgehogs, and;
-
c. Funding research into the behavioural habits of hedgehogs and to ascertain the best methods of assisting their survival.
In order to advance its objects, the charity focuses its activities on the provision of rescue and rehabilitation to hedgehogs in need as well as undertaking educational activities and public awareness raising projects such as school visits and engagement with the national and local media. Whilst these activities have been taking place for some time, the charity was formally constituted in June 2020 with these financial statements being the first to be reported to the Charity Commission.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
The charity undertook a range of activities during the financial year, completing a number of projects which had a direct positive impact to wild hedgehogs and rescues. The table below outlines some of the key achievements of the charity during the year.
Hedgehog rescue and rehabilitation
Rescue of 335 hedgehogs during the year. The charity has been rescuing increased numbers of orphaned hoglets in comparison to previous years, and has also noted an increase in road related injuries.
Completion of 8 new wild hedgehog gardens, providing a safe home for blind wild hedgehogs which cannot be released back into the wild. Each garden has its own rock pond, hedgehog house, feeding station and various shrubs and foliage.
Supporting the installation of new hedgehog highways by volunteers into gardens along designated “Hedgehog Friendly Streets” in Wheathampstead.

Designing new projects to benefit local wildlife Creation of a large “Community Bee Hive”
and the wider community, including: area at Bower Heath, involving and
benefiting the local community.
Creation of a new orchard at Bower Heath,
covering roughly one acre of land. This will
have benefit for local bees and other
insects.
Working in partnership with HWHT to rewild
Wheathampstead and the local areas.
Education
Hosting educational talks at the Sanctuary for local children’s groups, reaching thousands of
children. Whilst focusing on hedgehogs, the talks also teach children about conservation in general.
Working with Oaklands College to design educational games for children that can be played on a
table top, or a computer. The games will focus on issues hedgehogs face and ways to help them.
Meeting with a number of developers to educate housebuilders in making small changes in design
which can benefit local wildlife. A community day with Jarvis Homes and Commercial was held
during the year to support the charity with various projects.
Publication of several articles in local magazines on conservation and wildlife. These articles are a
great way to engage the local community and have had a positive response.
Partnering with the Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust (HMWT) to host educational and awareness
talks for their members. The charity is also working with HMWT to create a new wildlife pond in the
Bower Heath area, attracting newts and frogs as well as providing refuge for wild mammals
including hedgehogs.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE (continued)
Awareness raising
The Charity was featured on CBBC’s Teeny Tiny Creatures and has been involved with a number of TV shows during the year.
Meeting with the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives to discuss ways to help local wild hedgehogs, including meetings and visits with MP Bim Afolami.
The Sanctuary appreciates being invited to many local council events to help raise funds for the Charity and raise awareness of its work.
Delivery of over 1,000 local awareness leaflets during May and June 2022 in the Wheathampstead area, as part of the ongoing “Wheathampstead Hedgehog Friendly Streets Project”.
The charity is also supporting the installation of awareness posters at each Hedgehog Friendly Street. The poster was designed by Henry Beresford, age 7, from Wheathampstead.
Sustainability
Championing the creation of a drop off point at local shops in Harpenden and Wheathampsted to enable printer cartridges to be recycled.
Continuation of the crisp packet recycling project started in 2020, to reduce waste and benefit the charity.
Volunteers
As of June 2022 the Charity had 63 regular volunteers who undertake a range of tasks. These include:

Collecting injured hedgehogs in need of help

Providing medical care including veterinary operations and procedures to bring injured wild hedgehogs back to full health.

Cleaning, feeding, and weighing hedgehogs in rehabilitation.

Releasing hedgehogs once they have been through a successful rehabilitation period.

Physical work such as ground maintenance and general upkeep of the buildings used by the Charity.

Help with project related work that directly benefits the hedgehogs including hedgerow and tree planting.

General landscaping and garden maintenance.

Support with fundraising such as:

Helping the Charity at stalls and events to raise funds for the Charity and raise awareness.

Making craft items to sell at stalls and events to help raise funds for the Charity.

Assisting with grant applications and fundraising events.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
This is the second year the charity has been constituted and comparatives are included in the financial statements. A total of £48,746 was received during the year (2021: £33,313), with over £5,000 being raised through the charity’s trading activities.
A total of £34,872 was spent during the period (2021: £28,070), leaving net income of £13,874 for the year. General reserves at 30 June 2022 are £17,738 which is more than six month’s of expenditure at 2022 levels.
The charity received £6,485 of restricted grants for development projects, the majority of which was spent during the year to create the new Hedgehog Garden, and construct a disabled toilet block. There are £1,379 of restricted funds carried forward, out of total funds of £19,117.

Independent Examiner’s report on the accounts For the year ended 30 June 2022
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 30/06/2022.
Responsibilities and basis of the report
As the charity trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiners statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material aspect:

Accounting records were not kept in respect of the Charity as required by section 130 of the 2011 Act; or
-
The accounts do not accord with those records;
-
The accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. Accounting Policies
a) Basis of preparation
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with applicable United Kingdom accounting standards, the requirements of the Statement of Recommended Practice ‘Accounting and Reporting by Charities’ (SORP 2015), in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK (FRS 102) applicable to smaller entities and the Charities Act 2011. The presentational currency of the financial statements Pound Sterling (£).
The charity is a Charitable Incorporation Organisation (CIO) registered with the Charity Commission. The registered office address is given in the charity information page.
Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy or note.
b) Public benefit entity
The CIO meets the definition of a public entity under FRS 102
c) Going concern
The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the CIO’s ability to continue as a going concern. Further details are provided in the Trustees’ Report.
The trustees do not consider that there are any sources of estimation uncertainty at the reporting date that have a significant risk of causing a material adjustment to the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities within the next reporting period.
d) Income
Income is received by way of grants and donations, and generated through trading activities. Income is included in full in the Statement of Financial Activities, recognised when the charity has entitlement to the funds, any performance conditions attached to the income have been met, it is probable that the income will be received and that the amount can be measured reliably.
Income tax receivable in relation to Gift Aid donations is recognised at the time the relevant income is receivable.
e) Expenditure and allocation of support costs
Resources expended are recognised in the period in which they are incurred. Resources expended include attributable VAT which cannot be recovered.
Resources expended are allocated to the particular activity where the cost relates directly to that activity. However, the cost of overall direction and administration on each activity, comprising general office costs and other overheads, is apportioned on a basis which is an estimated, based on the proportion of each activity to the total cost of all activities.

f) Fund accounting
Restricted funds are to be used for specific purposes as laid down by the donor, or grant maker. Expenditure which meets these criteria is charged to the fund. The aim and use of each restricted fund is set out in the notes to the financial statements.
Unrestricted funds are donations and other incoming resources received or generated for the charitable purposes and are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of the general objects of the CIO.
g) Depreciation
Depreciation is provided on all tangible fixed assets of over £100 at rates calculated to write off the cost less estimated residual value on a straight line basis over their estimated useful lives as follows:

h) Creditors
Creditors and provision are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably.
i) Financial Instruments
The CIO has only basic financial assets and financial liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value.

The charity has one employee (2021: nil), Martin Maylin, who is also a Trustee of the charity.

9. Staff Costs (continued)
Mr Maylin became an employee of the Charity on 1 November 2021. Mr Maylin is the sole employee of the charity and oversees a team of volunteers to manage and maintain the running of the sanctuary. Prior to becoming an employee, Mr Maylin had undertaken these activities on a voluntary basis.

17. Related Party Transactions
The charity has one employee, Mr Martin Maylin who is also a Trustee of the Charity. During the year to 30 June 2022, Mr Maylin was paid a total of £5,959.
At 30 June 2022, a total of £742 (2021: £1,103) was owed to Mr Maylin for expenses incurred on behalf of the Charity and not yet reimbursed. This amount is included in “Other Creditors”.
