Charity Commission Report 2024/2025

Our Objects

THE OBJECT OF THE CIO PURBECK YOUTH MUSIC (PYM) IS TO INSPIRE, IMPROVE, DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN PUBLIC EDUCATION IN AND APPRECIATION OF THE ART AND SCIENCE OF MUSIC IN ALL ITS ASPECTS AND BY ANY MEANS THE TRUSTEES SEE FIT, INCLUDING FACILITATING YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE AREA TO PARTICIPATE IN INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL LESSONS, WORKSHOPS, AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES.

In 2024/25 the charity continued to inspire, excite and deliver instrumental and singing lessons to young people in the Purbeck area of Dorset.

Around 350 young people from our primary schools participated in our Sing for Jay concerts in the towns of Swanage and Wareham. Around 80 young people learned a string, woodwind or brass instrument through subsidised lessons delivered by a range of qualified musicians and teachers. The charity has incorporated the Purbeck Instrument Loan Scheme – which lends musical instruments to local young learners – into the charity and accepted both its reserves and responsibilities for safeguarding the instruments and ensuring they are properly accounted for and maintained.

Community support for our work remains a strength of the charity with several local trusts, foundations, choirs, other organisations and individuals donating to the charity. This has helped us maintain a positive financial result. For 2025/26 we will offer free taster sessions and make even more generous financial offers to support our charitable aims while being prudent in how we spend our funds. We will also invest a major part of our funds in higher earning funds consistent with having an acceptable level of risk and easy access to those funds should they be required.

We much appreciate the hard work put in by our tutors, by our Trustees and by all those across the community who support our work and help so many young people experience and enjoy music making across our area.
