Purbeck Youth Music

Chair’s Annual Report: 1 August 23 - 31 July 2024

A successful year, seeing the development of singing opportunities as well as an increase in instrumental tutors, ‘inspire’ visits to schools, and more group lessons.

Termly PYM ‘work in progress’ concerts continued - an occasion for all pupils learning an instrument to have the chance to perform for their family and friends.

There were PYM end of year concerts in Swanage at the Mowlem on Wednesday July 3rd and another at Lady St Mary Wareham on Tuesday July 9th which showcased as many young performers as we can muster including choirs and groups: strings, woodwind and brass, and a contemporary rock ensemble.

The Autumn 2023 Term saw the continuation of regular instrumental teaching in violin, woodwind, and brass culminating in an informal concert on November 28th at which over 40 children played solos or performed in groups. As well as this event, several students also played at the Christmas Tree Festival in St George’s Langton.

A brass ensemble - Conical Sonicals - visited several schools in September, playing to whole-school assemblies as the first stage of our ‘Inspire, Encourage and Develop’ initiative, where a special performance leads to offers of beginner group placements, and instrumental lessons.

We have also funded a new venture: singing workshops, with experienced vocal coach Susannah Nettleton, which have proved to be both popular and successful. Susannah has been an inspiration in 3 primary schools so far; Swanage Primary, St Georges Langton and Wool C of E. She visited Stoborough and Wareham St Mary in the Spring Term. Susannah sends material to the schools ahead of her visit and then uses the prepared work to teach the children how to sing by ear, in parts and in canon. A major singing concert to include all Purbeck primary schools is planned for next year.

Other background and administrative activities continue for PYM, including advisory management of 8 tutors, efforts to secure regular funding support, newsletters to keep the community informed, and the maintenance of the PYM website to handle contributions and information for parents, as well as a secure student database for tutors.

We rely on and value the support we receive from many community organisations and individuals as well as from Trusts and Foundations who share our desire to inspire and encourage music making in our schools. We would particularly Ike to acknowledge the financial support we received from The Alice Ellen Cooper Dean Charitable Foundation, as well as our many other local sponsors and supporters during this year.
