Our Vision

Is a Zambia where working donkeys are free from suffering, treated with compassion and truly valued by those whose livelihoods depend on them.

Our mission

To relieve the suffering of working donkeys and other equines in Zambia and to promote humane behaviour by providing appropriate treatment, care, protection and security for these animals which are in need due to sickness, maltreatment, Ill use or poor circumstances and to educate their owners and public in general in regard to donkey welfare and prevent further suffering.

How we work

Since founding the ZWDP in 2018 we have undertaken multiple outreach clinics visiting rural villages and have made significant improvements to the lives of the donkeys and thereby those of their owners. We have done this by removing the heavy and entirely unsuitable wooden ox yokes and provided new harnesses made in our workshop, modifying carts for use with harnesses and removing excess weight and installing shafts making them lighter and easier to pull. We also advise on loading these carts correctly for balance.

We tend to wounds , often many, treat skin parasites and deworm, teach about hoof care; crucially we have introduced education on the care and wellbeing of these animals. This has been well received in the main and the level of interest and willingness has exceeded our expectations.

Our achievements

Up to the end of financial year ending 11th June 2025

In this year we continued to make a big difference to the lives of working donkeys and their owners.

Our outreach clinics as well as our ‘drop in’ facility enabled us to treat 2014 animals with 78 villages and 674 owners benefitting from our help. Some 222 adults and 137 children were educated in the care of donkeys.

60 new humane harnesses were distributed, 12 were mended and 2 replaced.

There were also the many usual call outs and market visits where our team attended and dealt with multiple injuries and cruelty issues.

Rescued during this time were 19 donkeys and 16 animals were released or rehomed. We also hosted 2 ‘in house’ open days.

Our permanent herd of donkeys too old, sick or blind to be released, continues to grow.
