4. Activities and objectives

In April 2020, we were at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic and therefore all events were postponed until a time where we could act safely. We weren’t sure how long the pandemic would last.

By January 2021, we knew that the pandemic would be lasting indefinitely, and we decided to move our events online.

We ran an event in February and March 2021 called Chatty Saturday which hosted approximately 10-15 people each. At these events we facilitated conversations by having small groups with a facilitator in each who would ask participants questions

in turn to facilitate conversation and human connection.

In 2020-2021, we also developed a partnership with the charity North London Cares. They were interested in having Connected by Humanity facilitate our Chatty events with their service users, who are isolated older people and isolated young people. By the end of the 2020-2021 period, we had arranged our first Chatty event with North London Cares and their service users for April 2021.

5. Achievements and performance

Once we restarted our events, taking them online, we were successful in getting full or nearly full attendance at both our February and March events in 2021. We spread the word about our events through social media. We felt optimistic about the impact people were experiencing from their engagement during the event, and from the feedback they left (see below).

Our charitable object is to promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people from becoming socially excluded.

By running our events online and making it clear that donations were optional, we were able to promote social inclusion. People were able to attend events from anywhere in the country and connect with other people. We were warm and welcoming to all, making sure everyone felt included.

Here is some feedback from our first Chatty event on February 2021.

What was your experience of attending Chatty Friday?

Very well thought out and organised. Really enjoyable.

Very positive at a time of massive stress.

I loved it. Thank you so much for creating such a well thought out space for us to connect. I'm really introverted/shy and so this is a great way to connect for me.

I loved it! It's always so nice to meet new people, listen to different experiences and learn from others. Some of the topics were really deep and thought-provoking, and sharing in this safe format can be a really healing experience for people who've been through tough times.

It was a wonderful evening. I shared and heard stories that I didn't think I'd be able to within a group of new faces. It's incredibly empowering, a fantastic way to meet people from different walks of life and such a positive way to spend an evening.
