2. Objectives and activities
MIDZI exists to protect and improve the good health and well-being of women and girls, particularly, but not exclusively, in relation to reproductive and sexual health. We pursue this by:

Providing educational outreach programmes, materials and other forms of information; and

Providing support to enable women and girls to access opportunities such as conferences, workshops and exchange programmes.
We work in England and Wales, Malawi and Zimbabwe, mainly through education, advocacy, information, and partnership working.
In 2024, our activities continued to focus on low-cost, volunteer-run online work, in line with our charitable objects.
3. Public benefit
The trustees confirm that they have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit when planning MIDZI’s activities.
Our work benefits:

Women and girls experiencing or at risk of gender-based violence, sexual exploitation and other forms of abuse.

Women and girls affected by period poverty and barriers to sexual and reproductive health information and services.

Students and young women in the UK and in partner countries (Zimbabwe and Malawi) who need information, advocacy and signposting to support services.
All of our activities during the year were undertaken with the intention of furthering these public benefits.
4. Achievements and performance in 2024
- 4.1 Online outreach and awareness (Zoom and social media)
Although MIDZI did not receive any grant income or other external funding during the financial year under review, the trustees and volunteers continued to deliver activities online, primarily through Zoom and social media platforms (including Facebook, Twitter/X and WhatsApp).
Key strands of work included:
Online information and discussion sessions (via Zoom)

Sexual and reproductive health and rights

Period poverty and the impact on education

Gender-based violence, including sexual assault and harassment in educational settings

- These sessions provided safe, informal spaces for women and girls to receive information, share experiences and be signposted to specialist services where needed.
Social media awareness-raising aligned to our programmes

Through our social media channels we:

Shared educational content on issues such as period poverty, consent, and gender equality.

Amplified information about support services for women and girls in the UK and in partner countries.

Promoted a culture of open dialogue around menstruation, sexual health and genderbased violence, seeking to challenge stigma and harmful social norms.
Remote signposting and individual support

Responded to enquiries received via email, website contact forms and social media.

Offered basic information and signposting to specialist organisations (for example, for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, or students facing harassment in universities).
Because we had no funding in 2024, these activities were delivered entirely on a voluntary basis, and we did not undertake any grant-making to individuals or organisations during the year.
4.2 Organisational development and fundraising efforts
A major focus for 2024 was trying to secure sustainable funding to enable MIDZI to fully implement its programmes.
Trustees and volunteers worked on:

Identifying suitable grant opportunities and potential funders aligned with our focus on women and girls health, period poverty and gender-based violence.

Updating and refining concept notes and case-for-support materials based on our existing work. - Strengthening our online presence to support future fundraising, including keeping our website and social media active with relevant content.
Despite these efforts, securing funding has remained a significant challenge. The trustees will continue to prioritise fundraising and partnership-building in the coming year.
5. Financial review
For the year ending 31 December 2024:

Total expenditure: £0
All activities were carried out without external funding, with trustees and volunteers donating their time.
Because the charity had no income, expenditure, assets or liabilities in the year, no formal
reserves have been built up, and no grants were made to individuals or organisations.
Reserves policy
Given the absence of income in 2024, the charity does not currently hold free reserves. The trustees aim is to build a modest level of unrestricted reserves in future years (for example, to cover a small proportion of core running costs and provide stability between funding cycles) once income is secured.
6. Structure, governance and management
MIDZI is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.
The charity is governed by its constitution, which sets out the appointment, powers and responsibilities of trustees.
The board of trustees meets (virtually or in person) as required to:

Oversee strategy and activities;

Review risks; and
-
Ensure compliance with charity law and the governing document.
New trustees are provided with information about the charity’s work, constitution, and Charity Commission guidance, with ongoing support from existing trustees.
7. Risk management
The main risks identified by the trustees during 2024 were:

Financial risk: continued lack of funding limiting the charity’s ability to deliver its planned programmes and make grants.

Reputational and safeguarding risk: ensuring that online engagement with women and girls around sensitive topics (such as sexual violence and sexual health) is handled safely, with appropriate signposting to qualified services.
These risks are managed by:

Keeping activities within the capacity of a volunteer-run organisation with zero income;

Ensuring that online discussions are moderated by trustees/volunteers who understand the sensitivity of the issues;

Signposting individuals to specialist organisations and not attempting to offer professional counselling or clinical advice.
8. Plans for future periods
Looking ahead, the trustees intend to:

Intensify fundraising efforts, including targeted applications to trusts, foundations and other donors whose priorities include women and girls health, period poverty, gender-based violence, and education and empowerment in Zimbabwe, Malawi and the UK.

Formalise and expand online activities, including a regular timetable of Zoom-based information and discussion sessions, and online campaigns focused on gender equality and period poverty.

Develop partnerships with universities, community organisations and women’s rights groups in
the UK and partner countries to strengthen referral pathways and joint advocacy.
The trustees believe that, with adequate funding, MIDZI is well-placed to deliver meaningful impact for women and girls in line with its charitable purposes.
