## **THE FRIENDS OF ST MARGARET'S CHURCH, HIGH HALSTOW CIO. Registered 15 Jun 2020**

## **Trustees' Annual Report, 15.06.2020 – 31.03.2021.**

**The objects of THE FRIENDS OF ST MARGARET'S CHURCH, HIGH HALSTOW CIO are to promote and assist in the maintenance and upkeep of St Margaret’s Church, High Halstow for the benefit of all who value this ancient church and in so doing:-**

**1. To promote wide interest in the care and preservation of St Margaret’s Church and its history and to provide a focus of support for the Church building and its grounds.**

**2. To raise additional funds for the maintenance of its fabric, the churchyard, interior decorations and furnishings so as to assist the Parochial Church Council, when the trustees considers it appropriate. (The Church Council continues to be responsible for the Church and all the works done upon and within it.)**

## **3. To invite, promote and receive donations and contributions in pursuit of these aims.**

## **4. To ensure that fund raising is carried out in harmony with the ethos of the Church.**

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St. Margaret’s Church High Halstow with All Saints, Allhalllows Have the responsibility of cooperating with the Rector, The Reverend Stephen Guilt in promoting throughout the parish the mission of the Church, Pastoral, Evangelical, Social and Ecumenical. In addition it has the responsibility to maintain both its church premises. The Friends of St Margaret’s CIO assist the PCC in the task of maintaining the fabric of St Margaret’s High Halstow.

## **Achievements and Performance**

The Friends of St Margaret’s CIO have had a difficult year in dealing with the Pandemic and associated lockdowns and restrictions of movement. Fundraising activities were curtailed to a degree despite which the year has seen significant progress. The Window Restoration Project has progressed and

nears completion. Fundraising has continued with subscriptions from members and specific grants and donations from individuals and corporate fund holding institutions. A percentage of our income is held in reserve for necessary roof works. Following the theft of lead repairs were sanctioned by the insurers but only received temporary planning consent from the Local Council who now require that the roof be restored with traditional materials.

## Lockdown – Scarecrows

In the spring of 2020 we thought we might lose our Scarecrow Festival. Without the annual Garden Party cancelled due to Covid Guidance, to display the entries and receive donations the festival would be different in character. However the Scarecrows were displayed in front gardens throughout the village. We went ahead as a community activity resigned to a loss of funds for our vital Church restoration work but the Village rose to the occasion and we had thirty more Scarecrows than the previous year and through the donation boxes at the Post Office and Village Garage, raised more than the previous year.

It would be a great shame if we lost our annual Scarecrow Festival and with no Garden Party planned again this year we intend to repeat last year’s community celebration throughout the summer. This is not primarily a money making event. Its focus is community but the Post Office and Garage will again be asked to accept donations. Posters will be printed and Facebook’s “High Halstow Scarecrow Festival” page activated.

## **Scarecrow Nativity**

In the absence of a Christmas Tree Festival some members redesigned their scarecrows to produce a floodlit scarecrow nativity within the church porch which proved very popular and raised additional funds in the process.

## **Other Events, & Restoration Progress**

We have had a very successful year despite the pandemic. Scarecrows apart we had to cancel or reduce most events. This has limited our fund raising and our opportunities to recruit more subscribing members. Despite this we received a very generous level of subscriptions and donations which has allowed significant progress on the Window Project which is now nearing completion of the most serious restorations.

Events cancelled due to the pandemic were:-

## **The Christmas tree Festival.**

## **The Christmas Concert with the High Halstow Community Choir.**

## **The Coffee Tree. The Christmas Market Stall.**

The following events took place:-

## **The Knit and Natter Group.**

The poppies made by the **Knit and Natter Group** were used to construct an external “Remembrance Door” to replace the normal internal decoration which was not possible during the pandemic. It received many favourable comments.

## **High Halstow Christmas Cards**

Cards were made available again this year sold by their designer, Ray Collins. A good number were sold to appreciative customers. £150 was raised.

## **High Halstow REAL Christmas Trees were sold and delivered in the village.**

£160 was raised.

## **High Halstow Primary Academy.**

The School has confirmed that we will work together in the future as in the past as the “Roadmap” allows.

## **Future Events**

When life returns to normal we hope to reinstate our popular activities that were postponed last year and add to those events Historical Talks pertinent to the local area and held on a regular monthly basis. We have two ready for the autumn.

## **Membership.**

Our membership has not grown this year due primarily to a lack of personal contact in Lockdown. In order to build upon our success it is important that we recruit new members. The challenge in the year ahead will be recruitment of those who care about their church and wishes to help preserve the oldest building in the village so that it remains our distinctive landmark and is available for generations to come.
