## **Trustees’ report for the period ended 30 June 2025**

The trustees of ATHENLAY FOOTBALL CLUB, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), present their report together with the financial statements of the charity for the period ended 30 June 2025. The trustees have prepared the financial statements in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), and the requirements of the Charities Act 2011.

## **Financial Review**

We have maintained a healthy cash flow and generated a surplus of income over expenditure.

## **Objectives**

The Club's objectives are to provide sports, recreational, and leisure-time activities for the local community, particularly for those aged between 5 and 18 years, and to promote inclusive adult football. In particular, this includes the playing of association football, provided in the interests of healthy living, social well-being, and improving quality of life and opportunity. The area of benefit is primarily the London Borough of Southwark and adjoining boroughs.

Our vision is to provide an accessible, community-focused sports hub rooted in growth, inclusion, and opportunity for all. Our mission is to foster a welcoming environment where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can enjoy and progress in football and related activities. We aim to maximise the benefits of our Homestall Road facilities for the community, local schools, and other community groups.

## **Significant Activities**

Athenlay FC has grown significantly over the 2024/25 season, now supporting 511 players registered across competitive teams and 592 participants in all forms of football activity. Our provision spans boys, girls, women's, and men's football, as well as walking football, disability football, and introductory programmes for younger children.

We field 18 boys' teams competing in the Selkent League and 10 girls' teams competing in the Tandridge Girls League, the formation of which Athenlay played a key role in establishing in 2019. Across our junior membership, we have 288 boys and 145 girls registered in competitive teams. Our Ballers programme introduces children aged 5–9 to football, with 25 boys and 56 girls currently enrolled. Our Wildcats programme has also introduced a further 25 girls to the game.

We now field three adult women's teams and one men's team, with 44 women and 35 men registered. Many of our adult women's players began their footballing journeys with us as young girls, demonstrating the longterm pathways the club provides. Since launching our girls' programme in 2018 with a single weekly session, Athenlay has become one of South London's leading providers of girls' and women's football.

## **Programme Delivery**

During the 2024/25 season, the club delivered 3,154 football activities in total of which 1,774 at our Homestall Road ground and a further 1,380 at other locations across the borough and beyond. The club benefits from 60 FA-qualified coaches, 10 qualified referees, and an estimated 20,000 volunteer hours per annum. Our volunteers are drawn from the local community and include parents, former players, and dedicated individuals who give their time to provide opportunities for children and adults of all backgrounds.

## **Public Benefit**

The trustees have given due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit in planning and delivering the charity's activities. Athenlay proudly serves one of the most diverse communities in South East London. Over 60% of our players come from ethnic minority backgrounds, mirroring the vibrant makeup of our local borough. We work hard to ensure football is accessible to all, including offering support to families facing financial challenges and running inclusive programmes for disabled players.

ATHENLAY FOOTBALL CLUB is a **Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)** registered in England and Wales. Its charity registration number is **1189912** . Its registered office is **34 Mundania Road, London, SE22 0NW** .

## **2 Accounting policies**

## **Basis of preparing the financial statements**

These financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the **Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (Charities SORP (FRS 102))** , _Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)_ (effective 1 January 2019), the **Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)** , the **Charities Act 2011** , and the **Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008** . The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

## **Going concern**

In preparing these financial statements, the trustees have assessed whether there are any material uncertainties related to events or conditions that cast significant doubt upon the charity’s ability to continue as a going concern. In making this assessment, the trustees take into account all available information about the future which is at least 12 months from the date that the financial statements are authorised for issue. The trustees consider that the charity has adequate resources to continue in business for the foreseeable future and that it is appropriate to adopt the going concern basis in preparing the financial statements.

## **Income**

All income is recognised in the Statement of financial activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

## **Expenditure**

Expenditure is recognised when paid or when a liability has been incurred. The charity’s accounting records are maintained primarily on a receipts and payments basis, with appropriate year-end adjustments made where necessary in preparing these financial statements. Costs are classified under headings that aggregate expenditure according to the nature of the activity. Where expenditure relates to more than one activity, it has been apportioned on a reasonable and consistent basis.

## **Tangible fixed assets**

Tangible fixed assets are stated at market value.

## **Financial management**

The club has undergone an overhaul of its financial systems and processes including the how transactions are accounted. For this reason, comparatives have been removed for this year’s annual account. The format of the annual accounts has also followed suit as a result.
