WHAN REFLECTIVE ACCOUNT (By the Founder) Mrs Adama Bah
It gives me the greatest pleasure to provide a reflective account of WHAN ‘s (Women’s Health Advocacy Network) activities in general, especially over the last one year. I have seen this organisation grow from just an idea and a dream to the point of excelling daily. As a Founder of WHAN involving with the day to day running of the charity has helped me understand the issues surrounding service provision and the greater need for our services.
WHAN have been involved in various activities and one of them is providing excellent support network for survivors/victims through the help of accessing relevant services available to deal with their daily practical issues affecting their general wellbeing and advocating their needs to other service provider. The organisation has been receiving positive feedback both verbal and written from service users, individual professionals, community members and other organisations working with WHAN to ensure safe and effective provision of care. As a lived experience leader, my aim is to inspire and motivate other survivors to seek help in dealing with their trauma. I have seen WHAN not only motivating victims but other service providers (organisations) in terms of making an impact.
Personally, WHAN has helped me developed greatly from having no knowledge of setting up and running a charity except the experience of being a victim of sexual violence to this confident outspoken determine individual who is ready and willing to take any challenges in order to support other victims/survivor through their survival journey (the transition). I have had the opportunity to work with the Police, Social Service from different boroughs, The Modern Slavery Helpline, organisations operating safe houses and other organisations in support of women’s health. WHAN has also supported (taking part) policy makers through participation of research to help improve service provision for survivors of gender-based-violence. Our (WHAN) highlight for this year was, WHAN being the leading organisation for the MRU (Manor River Union) Community Health and Wellbeing Hub Project which was selected for the Mayor of London Poverty Prevention Challenge under CAD-HR (Centre for the Advancement of Development and Human Right). Being the Founder/CEO of WHAN and the Director of the Hub project gave me the chance to meet very important, amazing and inspiring people which only emphasized the relevancy of WHAN services and reenforced my motivation of working hard to make this charity succeed in supporting both service users and other service providers.
Reflecting on our above activities within this year, I am honored and proud to say that WHAN is making an impact and having the opportunity for more support will only enable the organisation grow and provide greater services to individuals and beyond. Considering this, I would like to say a very big thank you on behalf of me and my able team to every individual who has supported WHAN with our ongoing development. Thank You.
Most victims have no access to internet and telephone and the charity being the bridge between expert services and victims will help victims to seek help and increase their self-confidence.
With the right support and assistance, the victims will be empowered and therefore become a valuable member of the community contributing positively to community development.
The charity also plans to enhance quality of life and sense of wellbeing for the victims of rape through engagement and participating in activities and events that bring people together through cohesive benefit.
The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning future activities. Below are some testimonies from service users and external agencies the charity worked with during the year.

“Some years ago, I was suffering from depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts from my son being autistic and his transitioning from mainstream school to a special school. Me doing this transition by myself and not having the support from his dad made me to get to that mental state/ breakdown. One day I was talking to someone, and she introduced me to the Women’s Health Advocacy Network charity, and I called them for help and support. They were extremely supportive and helpful. They helped me to call my GP surgery to get some advice and support for me and my son and they also helped me with face-to-face sessions whenever am in distress. Women’s Health Advocacy Network Charity is phenomenal, and I am extremely grateful to them for all the help and support they provide for me and my family. Thank you so much for everything. I am very happy now doing things I couldn’t do before. Thank you so much WHAN. Your support is phenomenal and priceless only God will bless Adama and WHAN”.
Grant Making Policy
The charity makes grant to individuals who are victims of domestic violence both within and outside the United Kingdom. The charity supports other charities and missionaries that share its objectives in advancement of education and training for the public highlighting domestic and sexual violence against women and girls.
Volunteers
The charity is grateful to the unstinting efforts of its volunteers who are involved in providing services for the charity.
Review of Activities
The charity continues to enjoy tremendous growth in its physical and mental capacity during the year, and in the advancement of women health in accordance with the charity strategy document as contained in our Trust Deed. The charity continues to progress in its search for a permanent building to screen and process victims while waiting for help from the relevant authority.
Investment Policy
The trustees' have decided that at present, funds should be retained in Banks and Building Societies, and as far as possible in interest bearing accounts.
Reserves Policy
The trustees' policy is to have unrestricted and uncommitted funds (free reserves) to cover 3 to 6 months of resources expended which equals to roughly £16,000 to £32,000 in general funds.
The Trustees feel that this would enable the current activities to continue if there is a significant drop in funding. It would obviously be necessary to then consider how the funding would be replaced or activities changed. The trustees are continuing to seek additional unrestricted funds to build up its reserves.
Principal Funding
Funding has been provided mainly through donations, fund raising activities and pledges made by trustees and through Gift Aid claims. Pledges are also taken for specific projects.
Future Development
The charity continues to explore various ways of spreading the word on what the charity does in an effective manner. The charity is also looking to grow its donors and attend more conferences to create awareness to make life-changing impact in society.
