Trustees' report (continued) for the period ended 31 March 2021

Objectives and activities

The charity's objects

The promotion for the benefit of the public of the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of Ilkley, in particular:

Public benefit statement

In setting our objectives and planning our activities our Trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular the advancement of environmental protection or improvement.

Achievements and performance

Since forming as a charity in June 2020, Climate Action Ilkley (CAI) has achieved the following:

Land and Nature

We continued to support and develop our community orchard with the help of young and old(er) volunteers, spread across two sites near Ben Rhydding station and in Riverside Park. Funding came from Bettys Trees for Life, alongside donations from local organisations and private individuals.

We campaigned for local shops to stop stocking peat-based compost and encouraged members of the public only to buy peat-free.

We encouraged members of the public to install nesting boxes for swifts and created tree trails to increase awareness of local trees.

We held ‘balsam bashing’ sessions to help manage this invasive plant species.

We initiated the South Bank Project to increase biodiversity and public engagement with the natural world on a prominent area of public space in central Ilkley.

Energy

We ran a community scheme for residents to purchase and install solar panels on the roofs of their domestic properties.

Travel and Transport

We secured funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery to purchase electric cargo bikes for community and local business use.

We engaged with Enterprise Car Club to establish a car club in Ilkley.

We successfully lobbied Bradford Council to change their plans for a road junction in Ilkley town centre to be more pedestrian-friendly.

Materials & Products

We ran a technology redistribution scheme to collect unwanted electronic devices and offer them to local families in need.

Food

We ran a food choices campaign to encourage people to think more about buying local, reducing food waste, and eating less meat. We also attempted to engage local supermarkets with this issue.

Achievements and performance continued

Engagement

We held a virtual public meeting to discuss the Ilkley Sustainability Plan. Attendees included the local MP (Robbie Moore), town councillors, other voluntary groups and the wider public. There was strong support for the plan.

We have held a number of other public events, including an expert session on how to retrofit domestic house insulation, “Should we go vegan to save the world?”, “Water in the Dales: are we keeping up with climate change?”, and “How To Be More Pirate”. Despite the challenges of holding these on Zoom, attendees numbered between 20-50.

We ran campaigns to promote the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill and to encourage people to switch banks to those that don’t fund fossil fuels.

We made an organisational response to Bradford Council’s local plan consultation, which includes plans to build new housing on green field sites.

We were invited on to the Town Council’s Climate Emergency sub-committee to develop a plan to implement the declaration.

We hosted and supervised a student from the University of Huddersfield who produced videos, including an interview with the Mayor of Ilkley.

Financial review

The net receipts for the year were £6,143, including net receipts of £1,653 on unrestricted funds and net receipts of £4,490 on restricted funds.

Climate Action Ilkley has not been affected financially by the global pandemic. We have continued to receive income from membership fees, donations, and have successfully secured funding. Whilst at the time of signing these accounts the activities of the charity have been impacted by the pandemic in terms of being unable to carry out many of the activities and meetings we would no doubt otherwise have engaged in, the trustees have reassessed the charity’s ability to continue for at least 12 months from the date that the accounts are approved and conclude that no material uncertainties exist that cast significant doubt on the charity's ability to meet its liabilities as they fall due.

Reserves policy

The charity's free reserves, excluding fixed assets, at the year end were £1,653.

Climate Action Ilkley currently has no reserves policy.

Signed on behalf of the board of trustees on 1/11/2021

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Climate Action Ilkley Charitable Incorporated Organisation ('the CIO')

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the CIO for the period ended 31 March 2021, which are set out on pages 6 to 9.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').

I report in respect of my examination of the CIO's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the CIO as required by section 130 of the Act; or 2 the accounts do not accord with those records.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
