Hednesford Centennial Lions Club (HCLC) is part of the worldwide Lions organisation with the simple motto of ‘We Serve’.

HCLC meet monthly to manage its business and financial affairs. The meeting is open to all members of the group as well as members of the public.

Trustee and board meetings are held quarterly throughout the year. It is stated that in the HCLC AGM each April the new elected officers (president, treasurer and secretary) will automatically take on the role of trustee. One other trustee from the members of the group is elected at this meeting.

During each business meeting there is a section for events and service where we discuss ways to raise money and how and who we can help in the community. A side committee is set up for further discussions when needed to organise and present back to the business meeting the next month.

The charity’s main purpose is to fundraise to enable it supports the local community of Hednesford and when needed those further afield.

The charity states it will help: Children and young people; Elderly and old people; People with disabilities; and the General public/mankind.

During the year under review the majority of meetings have been held via ‘zoom’ and our activities have been somewhat limited due to the pandemic.

Due to the pandemic our annual senior citizen’s tea party was once again cancelled so a fish and chip supper was organised and Lions delivered over 100 meals to the elderly of the community.

Lions also donate regularly to the foodbank and support in person when they are collecting at the local supermarket. One of our Lions also volunteers regularly, helping to support the running of the foodbank.

We continue to donate monthly to the Guide Dogs. This supports the training of dogs in order to support visually impaired people.

Over the years we have collected thousands of glasses in order to support the recycling for sight campaign. This has continued this year with the support of the local opticians in the town. Glasses are sent off to be cleaned, sorted and graded and then sent to children and adults in need all over the world.

Other Lions members have also been involved with a community speed watch programme. This is trying to raise awareness of the need for safety on a roads and helping to keep our community safe.

Lions also support other local groups in the town and support bringing the community together with things such as decorating the town for Christmas, and Remembrance Day and supporting events such as the Christmas light switch on event and the summer festival where jobs include marshalling and speaking to members of the public.

Further afar HCLC have supported the families of Ukraine by donating money to the cause.

One of the biggest projects that HCLC started was at the local War Memorial. This year we have supported the War Memorial Society in raising money for the upkeep of the memorial and grounds. We meet monthly for a tidy round, including weeding and litter picking. We have also received a grant for installing a water pipe in order to support the maintenance of the grounds. This work is ongoing but has provided lots of opportunities for local groups, including children, to get involved. In October we organised a big community planting session where the community were invited to come and help plant spring bulbs in the gardens ready for a spectacular view in the Spring (Which didn’t disappoint.)

The money that is donated to these causes is mainly raised from tombola’s, raffles and grants from the local council.

Our accounts submitted clearly show our income and expenditure for the year under review.
