Purple Angel Dementia Awareness Devon was set up by some passionate people around 13 years ago and, like most charities, run by very dedicated and passionate volunteers who give up many hours of their time to support our Dementia Café. There were only a handful of local people at the first meeting, we now have around 20! We are self-funded and all monies raised, through different events, goes back to helping those with dementia and their families.
We meet in the church hall 3 Saturday’s a month from 1:30-3:30pm, giving our lovely members throughout the community the opportunity to meet new friends, join in many various activities prepared for them and share stories over a cup of tea/coffee and cakes and biscuits. The café is open for everyone who’d like to join us, they don’t have to have dementia – everyone is welcome. We have a planned schedule so the members, volunteers and trustees know what’s happening in advance and, if needed, resources bought and entertainers booked.
We offer a varied range of activities and entertainment, for example: quizzes, music (playing, listening and singing), painting, modelling clay, baton twirling displays, pampering sessions, flower arranging, exercise classes and many, many more.
Over the months, the activities were observed, taking a note of what activities were popular and how the members engaged. It was noticed that the music sessions we very, very popular with many of the members, volunteers and trustees joining in with the singing and getting out of their seats dancing, which

promotes mobility/exercise. Because of this observation, music sessions have been increased on the schedule.
We offer outings/trips for the members, offering them the opportunity to visit some of our local and a little further afield attractions and beautiful surroundings. Some places that have been visited are: the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, participating in a cream tea at a local venue, Christmas lunch and many more.
We’re very, very fortunate to have some excellent volunteers who are always doing their best to come up with fundraising ideas which, in turn continues the support of the café, for example: annual 3 mile sponsored walk, quizzes, bingo.
Social media is a good way to advertise, most people either have a Facebook or Instagram which can spread the word and advertise our events very quickly!
In November 2013 there were 50 Purple Angel Ambassadors – today there are thousands across the world and known in over 60 countries worldwide.
An annual WRAD – World Rocks Against Dementia – is held every year in September, uniting everyone across the world.
Music can be very calming for those with dementia. We give out free MP3 players to those who would like them, loaded with their own choice of music. We’ve supported over 54 NHS hospitals in the UK with the MP3 players.
We hope to continue supporting our community for as long as we’re able and have wonderful volunteers to support us.
