The Crediton Heart Project
Chair's Report for Year Ending 31 March 2024
The last year ha5 been the m05t eventful and productl¥e 51nce the Heart Project was launched
in 2018. Despitè the sèd departure of some key members, wè have made progre55 With our
core projects, explored and embraced new Inlli8tives and wel£orned new talent onto our team.
Summer Workshops
The year started with the successful delNery of our second Summer Arts Proaramme, thistime
In the easleT settingof the Arts Centre, rather than a marouee. Most workshops were ful
booked and much appreciated, 85 were ihe outreach session5 we did for Ukrainlan refugees
and Age Concern. The project strenEthened ovr ￿latIonshIp with the Art5 Cefjtre, providing
welcome b005t to the incomes Of both charitie5, Thanks must go to Patsy for Coordinating this
project so expertly. sourcing the funding. devisin8 the prosramme and generally keeplng the
whole show on the road.
Webslte revamp
The Crediton in and around website had $0 far been our most t&n8ible 3chievement. But we all
agreed that. aftef three years, il needed streamllning. Thanks to a Localr<y Fund from Devon
County Council, we were able to pay our ori8in31 desi8ner, Mark, to redeslgn the slte,
slmplifwngthe listlng page5 to rnake them ea51er to maintaSn and introduclng a new themed
home page. Huge thanks to Stephen for hls perseverance and hard work on this task. which
was not 3lw3VS Straightforward.
Town Team rner¢tr
Perhap5 the most Sl8nificant event of last year was our declsion to merge with Crediton Town
Team. Thls was taken following a sirateEic review meeting in September. when trustees met to
consider the future ol CHP. given that after live years we seemed no closer io our core aim of
buildin8 3 new communrfcy hub. Vèrious option5were considered 3nd it was agreed that
merger wlth the Town Team, whlch was éue to close, would be the most P051tive way to move
ft>rward.

Thls w45 0 bold, p0551bly r15ky rnove, 05 although it provided % welcome boost to our general
funds. it also committed us to a lot of ertra work as wetook over responsibility lor two of the
T￿n Team's high profile projects.
The Fkgg Prol¢
Flrstly the hugely popular Flae projett, ncw in i(s 11 year. went ahead under the CHP insieèd
of the Town Team banner, funded by an 3nnual grafit from the Town Council. Although the
pmlect started successAJlly, wlth 10 new flags being made and 60 fla8s bein8 Illstalled In the
town centre, It was unfortunately cut short when a flBg pole and bracket fell off the wall leading
to z lolnt dec151on by the Town Council ènd CHP to take all the fla85 down early lor 5aletv
purposes. We will now work wlth the Town Councll to review our safety measures, before
deciding whether togo ahead next year.
The Bl8 Bonlfaee Bash
Another inheritsnce from the Town Team was a pot of money ring fented for event5 promotsn8
St Boniface. Crediton's most famous son. To make the most of thi5. we teamed up with the
Town Council to organize the first 618 Bonlface Bash. a familyfun day in the park to celebrate St
Bonlface Oty. Thanks must go to Jo D3vey, the Town Council's Project and Events Offlcer, who
coordinated thls very successful event, whith attracted IOOD people during the day. Also thanks
to CHP a5soclate Rachel Vowles. who had the idea tor a Boniface Bash in the first place and
sta8e mèn88ed the live music on the day. and to our new recrult Vane55a MacDonald, who
bravely agreed to steward at this ￿ent, wSth no Idea what She ¥Y35 takln8 On.
There are plans to repeat the event next year and we wlll need to conslder what role CHP takes
Pailsh Chureh toncert
Earlier in the year. we had organlsed another Successful event- è coneerl thE Parish Church
by folk legends Kathryn Robertsand Sean ￿keman. Thls was a'progf of concept. project,
inltlated after cot)versatlons wlth the Parish Church about how tg in¢re4se the use and Income
of their venue to strengrhen ihelr bld to ihe Hertta8e Lottery Fund. The Concert Wa5 3 great
success, wlth 147 tlckets sold and even è small profit going to CHP ind Arts Centre, whowere
our £o-produ£ers. Although no progress has been made with the chureh'5 4mbitlOU5
development plans, this Is another example of CHP buildinB partnership5Wlth key communlty
or8ani5atlons.
Thanks to Eu8ene Mullan for hls workas our music prom¢xèr. l 8atherhe Is already explorln8
other option5 wlth the Arts Centre. to brin8 hi8h profile artlsts t¢ Crediton.

Communlty Hub
Oespite the demanos of these new projetts, we th'd not abantlon ¢xJr tore mlsslon, to bullLI a
new cornmuni(y hub for the town. Afterthe disappgintmentof our plan5 for thE Redlands slte
we switchèd ourattention tothe Newcombes Me8dowtoilet block-which we belleve has
huge potent181 to be developed as a tommunity ¥enue. The Town Council are keen to demo115h
the current buildln& they own, as it Is no longerflt for purpose and have responded
positively to our ideas. Over the past few rnonths we have hèd several constructlve meetlngs
wlth representat￿e$frorn the Town Council and Mid Devon Di5tria Council. who own the park,
to explore how we can work rogether ro develop the site. Aloint steering group his been set
up and ihe next slep Is to ralse funds for an arChtte￿'s feaslbilit¥ studv.
Thss Is only the start of what wlll no doubl be a very loneloumey, but it certainlyfeels Quite
exiting.
Town Manager role
ATrotherCHP idea which rnet with a positive response wasthe creation of a Town Manager role.
K￿e and Eugene ha¢J severa1 meetings with the Tow# Council 8nd the Chamber ol Commerce
to explo￿ how thiscould be achieved and they have even written a job description. All agreed
thfs would be hugely benefScial for the and the Town Council hs5 offered to be the
employer if we can raise the funds. We awalt a stsltable source of fvndlng to emerge before
taklnE this forward.
Farewells
We were very sad to lose two of our foundln8 trustees- Stephen Hocking and N#nry
Murgatroyd- who have both played such a eruelal role in the creation and devèlopment of CHP.

New iecrults
With our Members depleted, we started 2024 wlth a recruitmeni eornpaien whlth ftsrtuitously
delivered three excellent new people lo ourteam. Vanessa MacDonald, wFio hasloined as an
assodate, has already proved her worth at the Boniface Bash. Sarah Fryett has lolned the

board as well as the website team. and has stepped skillfully into 8racken'5 shoe5 a5 our Social
media manè8er. Flnally, Linda Wlllthmson will join us 8$ 8n assotiate in September.
SurnrnerArts Festl¥al
A5 a result of all th55 8Ctlvity we flnlshed our flnanclal year In a heakhier posltlon than ever. We
had also clinched fundingfor our third summer programme, whith thi5 year ha5 been expanded
Into a full scale Summer Arts Festlval- with workshops. film, music and theatre e¥Ènts acr055
three venues and, crucially, a blg8er ouireach programme taklng workshops to variou5
communitY8r¢ups. Tickets are already sellin8 well.
Thanks a8ain must 80 to Patsy for not only encouraging us to go ahead with this more
ambitious pro8ramme. but for yet a$ain securingthe funds and toordinatin8 the people and
