TRUSTEES REPORT FOR THE PERIOD: 1[ST] JANUARY – 31[ST] DECEMBER 2022

Background:

By way of reminder, it is the charity’s goal to introduce the Chris8an story of the uncondi8onal love of God, through acts of service to Arab and Jewish residents of Jerusalem’s Old City and environs, in the hope that in the days to come, one congrega8on of believers might iden8fy together, first as Children of God, as the “One New Man” of the Apostle Paul’s leEer to the Ephesians, before each iden8fies ethnically as Jewish or Arab.

To this end, the charity employs one remunerated staff member, the Field Director, who cannot be named for security reasons.

Her year has been a challenging one.

The charity’s vision is worked out on the ground in Jerusalem, and so, the Field Director is embedded in a fractured and trauma8sed popula8on. She cannot escape the personal impact of living in a society always on the brink of war. In the last months of this year (2022), during na8onal elec8ons, mass rallies of protest and bombings with deaths and injuries occurred in the city. Whilst the Field Director is no stranger to trauma and PTSD, the trustees are mindful of the stress on her physical and emo8onal wellbeing.

As if this is not enough, the FD and her spouse bear their own health issues. The FD started the year with pneumonia and struggles on with other chronic health issues. Meanwhile, the FD’s spouse con8nues to fight a legal baEle to be allowed to make Aliyah…a return to his Jewish homeland and what will be, the reunion of husband and wife. He is presently undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. His father, unwell throughout the year, died this December. The FD took compassionate leave to be with her husband before the two of them were able to take 8me out for a holiday.

The trustees are mindful of the considerable strain under which the Field Director and her spouse work to fulfil the vision of OHI. We are thankful for the wider support given by friends of OHI.

Working out the vision:

Despite these ongoing challenges, the Field Director has been occupied daily as follows:

• She visits and listens to the cares of local residents,

• following up on their joys and burdens with text messages, prayers and further visits.

• She will explain her mo8va8on to those who ask but,

• it is her primary purpose to demonstrate love for her neighbours with acts of kindness and service.

• For those who ask about her faith, she will explain Hebrew bible passages.

• For those who seek it, she will disciple and mentor Chris8an believers.

• For those who are wrestling with present or past trauma, the FD will offer face-to-face counselling.

Significant Progress

The FD has made significant progress towards achieving the objec8ves she set out in her Ministry Plan for the calendar year 2022.

In this past year she has recorded:

• 56 pastoral visits

• to 5 Jewish and 5 Arab neighbours

• mentored 5 women

• regularly taught scripture to 1 Jewish woman

• counselled 5 Israeli clients (one couple)

• prayer walked neighbourhoods 4 8mes weekly

• invested in rela8onships with representa8ves of Jerusalem Interna8onal House of Prayer, Beit Chai Ministry House, Schmidt School, Interna8onal Chris8an Embassy Jerusalem;

• aEended Hebrew language studies twice weekly at level gimel

• wriEen coursework for discipleship, marriage prepara8on; devo8onal materials for PTSD/trauma sufferers and chapters for future publica8on in a book presen8ng a Chris8an Therapeu8c model for the healing of PTSD/trauma.

• Read on subjects theological, leadership skills, prayer

• Hosted 3 visitors to Jerusalem from amongst OHI prayer partners and the chair of trustees with his wife.

• Recruited and mobilised prayer partners around the world

• WriEen weekly prayer leEers, a monthly news/prayer leEer and quarterly reports

• Led a monthly virtual prayer mee8ng

• Maintained WhatsApp contact for daily prayer maEers with a dedicated prayer group

• Maintained the administra8on and the database of supporters

As a faith-based charity, relying on gifs from individuals and churches that share OHI’s vision, our income relies on visits to local UK churches where the FD and her spouse are invited to speak and individuals (in the main) choose to gif support. One-off gifs make for the larger share of the income.

The charity is newly launched. We have been banking now for 18 months. If we average our monthly income in 2021, we were gifed £3400 a month. That average dropped over 2022 to £2700 a month with an equal average expenditure. In other words, we are running hand to mouth with a star8ng and ending balance this year, of £3000.

Our immediate expenditure is all about financing the Field Director’s living expenses in Jerusalem where the cost of living is comparable to living in London. As a new charity, we have only been able to cover expenses and pay the FD a £500 living allowance. OHI has also invested in legal advice for the FD’s spouse’s an8cipated move to Israel.

It is OHI’s policy to hold £3000 in reserve as the minimum sum which will cover one month’s expenses.

Structure, governance, and management:

The charity’s governing document is its Cons8tu8on, dated 5[th] August 2019 and it is cons8tuted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisa8on (CIO).

In selec8ng individuals for appointment as trustees, the exis8ng trustees must have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience necessary for the effec8ve administra8on of the CIO. Such individuals must also subscribe and adhere to, in belief and lifestyle, the Statement of Faith.

New trustees are invited on the board by serving trustees, from amongst recommended 8metested supporters of OHI’s vision, to serve for a minimum of two years.

At the start of this accoun8ng period, the Chair of Trustees was Vivien Metliss. She re8red August 2022 as did two other trustees: Sarah Hoskins and Trevor Rodgers. OHI is grateful for their good service in seeing the charity move from concept to reality. Four new trustees have been appointed this year. Their details are given below.
