Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 14 May 2020 to 30 April 2021

Charity name: The Lindow Ensemble

Charity registration number: 1189479

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 (1) To advance the arts and culture for
the benefit of the public in Greater
Manchester and Cheshire and (2) to
advance education for the benefit of
current students and recent alumni of the
Royal Northern College of Music
(‘RNCM’) and other institutions of higher
musical education.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
The ensemble is a string ensemble that
typically consists of 12 players,
comprising full-time professionals,
students or recent alumni of the RNCM
and amateur players of a high standard.
Its main activity is to perform concerts of
chamber music. Owing to the pandemic it
has been unable to do so during the
reporting period. Instead it has made
preliminary plans for the performance of
concerts in 2021-2022 and, to this end,
has raised the funds referred to in the
accounts and is seeking additional
financial support from several trust
foundations.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The trustees confirm that, in planning
concerts for 2021-2022, they have had
regard to the guidance issued by the
Charity Commission on public benefit.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 As stated above, the pandemic has
prevented the ensemble carrying out its
main activity of concert giving during the
reporting period. It has, however, raised
funds towards the performance of a
series of six concerts in 2021-2022 and is
seeking additional funds to finance them.
Subject to the pandemic and necessary
funding, the concerts will take place in
Manchester and Wilmslow. As regards
the public, the ensemble reasonably
expects total audience figures of 600-900.
As regards students and recent alumni of
the RNCM, the ensemble intends to invite
selected students and alumni to rehearse
for and perform in all six concerts. The
ensemble also plans to commission a
work or works from one or two RNCM
composition students or alumni. Thereby
the ensemble will assist these students
and alumni in the transition to a
professional career, a step that the
pandemic has made harder than ever.

Financial Review

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 As shown by its accounts, the ensemble
has assets of £6328, intended to go
towards the cost of the 2021-2022
concerts. It requires additional funding of
£5-6K for this purpose.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 The ensemble became a CIO in May 2020
and to date has no reserves policy or
accumulation of reserves. The ensemble
will review the position when it becomes
more firmly established.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 Nil.
Reasons for holding zero
reserves
Para 1.22 The priority of the ensemble is to
accumulate sufficient funds to deliver the
2021-2022 concerts. Once that has been
achieved, it can consider the
accumulation of a reserve.
Details of fund materially in
deficit
Para 1.24 None.
Explanation of any
uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going
concern
Para 1.23 If the ensemble is to continue as a going
concern it requires a regular income of
£10-15K per annum. It has not yet
achieved this but will pursue all
appropriate fundraising activities in order
to do so.
