Achievements and performance
Summary ofthe maln
achievernents of the charity
during the year
When Lydgale Comrnunty Ass(￿lat￿)n vras set up one of our principle
aims was to create a Communty Hub that would meet the needs of those
close by, in the immediate village. but also those living in the much wider
parish Ihat included the villages of Springhead. Grotton. Grasscroft and
parts of Scoutheaj and AusterL2nds. In realty. because of the wide
variety of groups using the hall people come from across Saddleworth
and beyond. Interestingty, individual users have seen the qualty of the
faci151ies availatAe and have booked for patties and other famity
celebrations.
User groups come and go over time as habits and leaders change and it
is sad that the Scouting Group have ceased with dwindling numbers
making rt unvk8ble. We have seen this in the past and so, rf new leaders
and volunteers can step foTh¥ard. there is every chance thal it could
retum and the hall is still potentially available. The loss of the Dance
sch1￿ vrds a surprise but in 2024 a new group has set up to provide
ballroom dancing lessons. However. vacant slols in the weekty schedule
continue to prowde Sp￿ for existing groups to eV0￿e and new 8Ctivities
to be tr￿d.
The water ingress and damp problems have, to a large extent been
solved. although given the age of the building there will a￿ayS be work to
do and at the end of 2023 quotes were obtained for fairty $ubstantl81
remedial to areas of flat rcof at the back of the building, which the
Church PCC organised and paid for. albeit in 2024 when the weather
improved.
mentioned in Ihe 2022 Chairperson's Report the grants for a
Communty Garden were unsuccessful, but the trustees still wanted to
impfove the grounds, particularty at the front. our 'shop window,. Sadly,
Margaret Merckel, a long-standing member of the village communty died
in October but, prior lo her death she graciousty donaled £10,000 to the
Associat￿￿ that enabled the resurfacing of the remainder of the front
surface and the addition of a bench. One of Marga¥el's other wishes
was also acted UFMin wrth the purchase of two bookshelves to enable the
l enlargement of the welkused cc¥nmunty library in the h811.
Wear and tear in a much-used hall means that we are constantly on lop
of ￿ecoration where necessary and grant funds have been provided
that have enabled the purchase of a portable PA system to improve the
sound qualty in the main hall.
Running this vital communty hub takes a lot of managemenl time and
hands-on voluntary work to minimise cost. As with last year our AGM
resulted in additions to the Board of Trustees when local Councillor Max
Wcthvine and Sara Mitchell agreed lo join us. Dave Marshall stood down
as Treasurer. but agreed to become a Trustee. There was recognition
thal being too hands-on can take away strategic managemenl of the hall
and there vrns a need for us all lo stand back and at our original
BusirEss Plan and this t*came an issue that wa¥ finally tackled in 2024,
bui more of that next year.
Changes that have come into effect during 2023 are..
