## **Holidays** After the trials and tribulations of last year, when so many holidays had to be cancelled on account of the Covid pandemic, we were delighted at the prospect of the Nightingale Centre being filled once more with the joy and laughter of lots of excited children. The warm and caring staff welcomed 337 young people in a record-breaking 16 groups, most of them visiting Great Hucklow for the first time. They came from Accrington, Chesterfield, Colne (2), Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Liverpool (6), Mansfield (2), Nottingham, Salford and Southend-on-Sea. Of those, three were youth/community groups and the rest were schools. Two more groups had hoped to attend, but withdrew as the holiday dates drew near: Blackpool Young Carers were unable to put together a viable group because of health concerns in vulnerable households; and St Cuthbert’s Primary School in Liverpool had children and staff stricken by illness. We hope they will visit in 2023. **The holiday gives children the chance to make friends and build on friendships.** Some groups visited Great Hucklow early in the year, in the snow and rain, and were delighted with our wet-weather gear – generously funded by supporters of our ‘Kit out a Kid’ appeal. Wellies and warm socks are still in the pipeline. Back at the Centre, the children were able to snuggle down with Hucklow teddy bears, take-home gifts from the Old Chapel Unitarian congregation. **----- Start of picture text -----**

2 Leaders and children alike have been deeply appreciative of the opportunity to have a holiday at the Nightingale Centre, and are overwhelmingly positive in their feedback. Some leaders have suggested wider sharing of ideas and information across groups, to enable them to learn from others’ experiences, and we shall look at ways of doing that for next year. With a wide range of dietary preferences among children, the Nightingale Centre works hard to provide nutritious meals for all at every occasion, and children’s and leaders’ feedback plays a valuable part in helping this to happen. We continue to work closely with Andrew’s Coaches, who transport the groups to and from Great Hucklow and on excursions during the week. For 2023, we have invited 19 groups, listed elsewhere in this report. ## **60th anniversary** Much planning and effort went into our 60th anniversary celebration. It was truly a team effort – from design of an eye-catching poster (Judith Short) to creation of a celebratory worship service (Peter Godfrey, Tom Grimshaw, Ernest Baker); from uplifting opening devotions at the General Assembly’s Annual Meetings (Peter Godfrey) to a heart-warming overview of the Fund’s birth and development (Peter Godfrey, Sarah Benfield and Pauline Smith, with invaluable IT help from Richard Crompton). Peter Godfrey was central to all of this, and his inspiration and lifelong contribution to the work of the Fund were acknowledged with a gift and certificate from the Trustees, presented by Peter Hewis. The anniversary service was sent to all Unitarian ministers, lay leaders and congregations in the UK, and there are reports of it being well received in a good number of worship settings. The mail-out prompted requests for additional copies of the spring issue of SACH News, a useful promotional tool in congregations and beyond. **The children had an amazing time and learned a lot about themselves.** 3 ## **Outreach** In the summer of 2021, the Secretary and Treasurer collaborated on a project with the Director of the Foundation that covered our £23,000 deficit in 2019-20. The Foundation supports academically-driven young people from disadvantaged backgrounds as they prepare for university, and encourages them to ‘give something back’. Under professional leadership, the students were asked to look at some of the challenges we face as a small, volunteerled charity, and we outlined four areas for them to explore – extending our reach; developing targeted publications; taking care of existing donors/recruiting new ones; and engaging with social media. The Trustees welcomed the students’ research findings and recommendations, and are taking some to the next stage. For example, Hull was identified as one of the most deprived areas in the UK, so with support from a local Trustee (Sue Catts) we have invited two groups from the city to have a holiday at Great Hucklow in 2023 – an academy and a Scout group. Our search for a group from Birmingham continues. The Trustees are considering how they might embrace social media in a way that is beneficial and sustainable, and would welcome offers of help, both technical and handson, to develop new ways of staying in touch with existing supporters and reaching out to new ones. The new website, built by George Ogden, has been praised for being clear, informative and easy to navigate. The students had suggestions for enhancing it with videos and making it interactive, and this requires further consideration. Their suggested design for a logo – simple and dynamic – has led the Trustees to look with fresh eyes at our printed and online materials, and plans are in hand to give them a gentle makeover. The Foundation encouraged the Trustees to allocate up to £3,000 of their donation to this overall project, for which we are very grateful. **It gives leaders a chance to get to know our children better and understand how we can best support them and help them to grow into outgoing, happy, healthy individuals.** 4 ## **Finances** We received donations of £61,000, just exceeding our target for the year. Thank you to all our donors. The total cost of the holidays was £113,000. As a result, we spent a total of £39,000 more than our income. This is very similar to the surplus last year when we could only provide holidays for five groups. The value of our investments continues to fluctuate. After an increase in value of £60,000 last year, we saw the value of our investments decline by £65,000. Using the Charity Commission method of including unrealised gains and losses in income and expenditure, our deficit was £104,000 compared to a surplus of £106,000 last year. We thank the numerous individuals, and Unitarian groups and churches who made donations, especially those people who support us regularly. Congratulations to Dorothy and John Hewerdine and to Richard and Lynne Varley on their golden wedding anniversaries, in whose honour we received donations. Their anniversaries were in 2020 but they celebrated this year due to Covid. We also received a legacy from Joyce Fletcher and a number of gifts in memoriam, which are listed elsewhere. We thank Timperley Boneshakers again for their bike ride to Llandudno last year in memory of Alan Laver. We received a further £4,400 from their efforts. As well as using JustGiving for fundraising, ‘Memory Giving’ provides a web page for online donations in memory of a loved one. The page is available for a limited time before and after the funeral and it provides an opportunity for people to make donations. **The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming; nothing was too much trouble. It was just such a magical, special week.** Our online donations came primarily via JustGiving now that Virgin Money Giving has closed. We received £1,900 in online donations. 6 Our administration costs were greater this year partly because of higher broker’s charges, the cost of personal attendance at our AGM, and expenses associated with JustGiving. The bank has reduced its charges now that interest rates are rising. We spent more on publicity, including a stall at the Unitarian General Assembly. The cost of printing the 60th anniversary service is included in publicity costs, although a generous donor covered the cost. Despite all this, expenditure on administration and publicity was less than 3% of our total expenditure. We take this opportunity to thank Ruth Taylor, our Trustee who processes the donations, for her ongoing help and support. Thanks, too, to Mike Georgiou, who has agreed to review the accounts again. The Treasurer usually concludes his financial review of the year with a target for us to raise for next year. He became involved in 1963, leading one of the earliest holidays for a group of children from Leicester. He was involved in creating guidelines for leaders, in setting up the original Send a Child to Hucklow charity in 1976, and he inspired a number of his helpers to go on and become leaders themselves.
