The trustees have pleasure in presenting their report and the unaudited financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2022.

The Funzi and Bodo Trust was originally established under its original constitution dated 30 January 2007 (as amended on the 8 July 2007), with the same objectives as the new CIO. The Funzi and Bodo CIO was established under its constitution on 22 April 2020 and immediately took over all of the assets and liabilities of the original trust. The original trust has been linked to the new CIO by the Charity Commission, and the new CIO has taken over all of the activities of the original trust.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

The Charity's objectives are to promote and protect the physical and mental health of those living in Funzi and Bodo and the surrounding areas in Kenya through the provision of financial assistance, education and practical advice. To develop the capacity and skills of the socially and economically disadvantaged communities of Funzi and Bodo and the surrounding areas in Kenya in such a way as they are better able to identify and help meet their needs and to participate more fully in society. To improve the education and training of the residents of Funzi and Bodo and the surrounding areas in Kenya in order to improve their conditions of life. Relief of poverty in Funzi and Bodo and the surrounding areas in Kenya.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

Review of Activities

Having survived the difficulties of the covid pandemic the charity found itself challenged in new ways. The war in Ukraine caused crisis in Kenyan food prices as much of the grain from Ukraine is shipped to Africa. With people on tiny wages the huge hikes in prices were impossible to meet from family budgets and hungry people looked to the charity for help. With teachers reporting cases of children fainting from hunger the Trust felt it had to respond - even though this involved significant costs and had not been part of our financial planning. At the same time the charity had to deal with other rising prices for other items it purchases and to respond to staff in Kenya who were struggling too. There was no comparable increase in regular donations albeit we had received a legacy. Despite these hostile circumstances the Funzi and Bodo Trust has continued to maintain its services and, in some cases, has increased what it offers to the villagers.

Education

The charity continues to fund teaching assistants at both schools to meet the shortfall in Government sponsored teachers. This is also valuable training for the people who hold these posts as many go on to get other jobs or are helped by the trust to pursue further educational opportunities. The charity provided more library books for children and teacher reference books. It also helped in the run up to exams with practice papers and other support materials. The two schools built by the charity were also maintained by the Funzi and Bodo Trust including the provision of new desks. We are continuing to help teenagers and young adults to access training and qualifications either at local colleges or at university and we are encouraged by their successes. Many are the first individuals in their families to get higher education. The wages they can earn are a critical part in the bid to beat the cycle of poverty in these communities.

Health

Our clinics are the core part of our activity in Funzi and Bodo. People can get instant access to a nurse every day of the week including weekends. They are provided with access to a laboratory identifying common diseases like malaria and are dispensed free medicines. The charity continues to fund medical operations and cares for those who are long term sick or have conditions like sickle cell. Nurses are on call 24 hours a day and deliver babies in our two birthing rooms. We are encouraged by the progress of our children’s disability unit and are looking to extend this service to other vulnerable groups especially the elderly. Our mobile parasite or jiggers clinics continues to do great service to children suffering from this painful condition.

We have seen some successes in our sewing workshops which make reusable sanitary pads which are given free to girls, so they don’t miss school during their periods. We hope to see the groups become more stable and to increase in number. This year we have set about providing more toilets in Bodo to add to the 200 the charity has already built. This should see a further decline in cases at our clinics.

Economic Regeneration

We have continued to provide interest free loans to community groups to establish small businesses. Most are successful and repay their loans which can then be reallocated to other groups. However, we intend to review the criteria on which these are given in the year ahead and open up to individuals or existing businesses who need to be helped to “the next stage” so they can attract larger orders or start to employ local people which in turn boosts the local economy. Less encouraging has been our chicken farm project. Despite attracting contracts for the large numbers of eggs produced and successful management of the facility the ever-rising price of grain is taking a serious toll. This is a direct consequence of the Ukraine war causing feed prices to increase on a monthly basis. Drought in Kenya has also been another factor, other egg producers in the area have already closed because of this. In 2024 we are anticipating a change in direction which will build on the infrastructure of the farm and bring more benefits to the people on Funzi.

Summary

This has been a successful year for the Funzi and Bodo Trust against a very difficult backdrop dictated by world events which are beyond its control. It has managed to remain in a good financial position despite challenges at home where people are more reluctant to donate to charity and costs are rising abroad. The Trust continue to invest in the two villages in a significant way which will have long term benefits for individuals as well as the community. We feel confident about the future while not underestimating the challenges which continue to present themselves.

Financial Review

The financial statements for the year shows income £191,396 compared to £114,253 in 2021. Total expenditure amounted to £155,381 which, after adjusting for exchange rate variances, still left reserves to carry forward to future years of £140,530.

PLANS FOR FUTURE PERIODS

The priority of Funzi and Bodo Trust is to continue to provide the facilities described above.

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2022

I report on the Receipts and Payments Account and Statement of Assets of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2022.

RESPECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES OF TRUSTEES AND INDEPENDENT EXAMINER

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this period under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

· examine the accounts (under section 145 of the 2011 Act, as amended);

· to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145 (5)(b) of the 2011 Act, as amended); and

· to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

BASIS OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
